January 22, 2015 Missionary Update: Alfors Family

Dear Family & Friends, Dave’s Mom was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. Last week the doctor said that we need to think in terms of weeks, probably not months that she will be with us. So we have decided to return to the States to be with her. Lord willing, we will arrive in Minneapolis on January 27. When we talked with Mom on the phone, we said that we were very sad to hear this news. She said, “Yes, but just think of what’s waiting for me on the other side!” What a wonderful hope we have. One of the hard parts is that Dad Alfors has Alzheimer’s and is very dependent on Mom, so it’s hard for her to think of leaving him. Our loving heavenly Father will care for him too.

The Imaniya are a group of former Mxslxms who came to faith in Christ through a Nigerian prophet, Isa Haruuna. In 2000 Isa Harunna was arrested and mysteriously “disappeared” in prison. Since then many of the Imaniya have been very secretive about their faith or have returned to Ixlam. Many of them are illiterate, and because they have not used the Bible, many of them still do not know the full story of Jesus. Some of them know how to read Ajamiya, Fulfulde written with the Arabic script, or could listen to the Bible in audio form. Last Saturday we visited an Imaniya village about 1 ½ hours north of here. It’s a small village in the bush with only 3 household heads, plus wives and children. They were very warm and welcoming. We loved hearing their story of coming to faith through another Imaniya man. We ended our time in the village with a worship time – standing in a circle with the men, women, and children together, chanting/singing, gently swaying forward and backward. It was really special to fellowship with these believers.

PLEASE PRAY: 

For courage and peace for Mom Alfors. Pray for special times together as a family.

For wisdom and clear direction about how we can strengthen the Imaniya in their faith.

Blessings, Dave & Patsy Alfors
