Athens First United Methodist Church Third Sunday of Advent December 11, 2016 8:30, 9:45, & 11:00 a.m.

Welcome

We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

The Worship of God PRELUDE “Awake My Soul, Awake My Tongue” | Benjamin Keach & Latifah Phillips CALL TO WORSHIP

Betsy Butler Psalm 146:1, 5-10 | p. 549 old testament Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! *H Y MN OF PR AISE

*AFFIR M ATION OF FAITH | The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

211 “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” | VENI EMMANUEL O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice, Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. CHILDR EN’S MESSAGE

Linsey Jarrett Anthem Lyrics

Herald in the wilderness breaking up the road, sinking mountains, raising plains for the path of God. Prophet to the multitudes calling to repent in the way of righteousness, unto Israel sent. A voice in the wilderness, a voice calling out a song of a child, a King, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” Messenger, God’s chosen one foremost to proclaim, proffered titles passing by, pointing to the Lamb. Captive, for the word of truth, boldly witnessing; then in Herod’s dungeon cave, faint and languishing. Martyr, sacrificed to sin at that feast of shame; as his life foreshowed the Lord, in his death the same. Holy Jesus, when he heard went apart to pray; thus may we our lesson take from this Saint today.

219 “What Child is This?” | GREENSLEEVES Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear, for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Matthew 26:17-19, 26-29

Prayer of Preparation Loving God, as we come to your holy table, we open all the dark places in our lives and memories to the healing light of Christ. Show us the creative power of hope. Surely God is our salvation; we will trust and will not be afraid. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of God’s coming. God is our strength and our might. With joy we will draw water from the wells of salvation. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of God’s coming. Give thanks to God, call on God’s name; make known God’s deeds among the nations. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of God’s coming. Shout aloud and sing for joy, for great in our midst is the Holy One. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of God’s coming.

Sung: A candle is burning a candle of joy, a candle to welcome brave Mary’s new boy. Our hearts fill with wonder, and eyes light and glow, as joy brightens winter like sunshine on snow.

*THE AFFIR M ATION OF FAITH FOR A DV ENT

Betsy Butler We believe in God robed in splendor, veiled in mystery, ruler alike of darkness and light. We encounter God in Jesus Christ, whose touch brings a blaze of color to a dull, drab world: reviving the weary, healing the wounded, dazzling the satisfied; who was put to death, but whose radiance could not be quenched. We walk with God guided by the light of God’s loving Spirit, who enters the shadowed places of our hearts and leads us into truth and life. We wait for God and for the fulfillment of God’s promise, when the darkness will hold no fear, and the light will no longer blind, but creation will be made whole once more and God’s peace will reign forever. Amen.

The Advent Wreath | Joy The advent wreath is a tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent. The wreath is a circle of various evergreens, signifying continuous life, the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. The four colored candles represent hope, peace, joy, and love, and the center candle represents the birth of Christ. Today we light the candles for hope and peace, and add the third candle for joy.

And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Isaiah 35:10
