Pastor’s Column • December 11 Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete comes from the Latin word from the opening antiphon for today’s Mass—Rejoice! We have reached the midpoint of our Advent journey. Our first reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah is filled with images of the desert coming into full bloom. The words of God’s promise ring true, “Here is your God, he comes with vindication.” God, Himself, comes to save and it is He who initiates salvation remembering His promise to His people. It is Jesus who becomes the fulfillment of this promise. For this reason, Jesus cures the blind, deaf, mute and crippled as signs that He is the Redeemer and fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy. In our second reading from the letter of Saint James, we are reminded to be patient and firm as we await the return of the Lord Jesus. The image of the farmer and waiting for fruit to come forth is no different than our waiting for the Lord. Patience is an authentic Christian virtue as we wait in hope for the coming of the Lord. It is patience that enables us to embrace the cross knowing that the Lord is truly with us each day. Peace flows from patience in our daily lives. It is not peace of mind or temperament but a gift based on faith. It shuns all spitefulness, grumbling and turmoil in distress. It is an imitation of God who is patient and slow to anger. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit, a true grace and mark of a Christian. The prophets, saints and martyrs give us great examples of patience and peace based on faith in the midst of their own difficulties and mistreatment. Despite all their difficulties they never wavered or doubted God—they persevered in their mission. In our gospel passage from Matthew, we see Jesus giving high praise for John the Baptist. John is now imprisoned by Herod and his disciples come asking Jesus if He is the one. Jesus responds, “the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear....” Jesus fulfills the promise of the Redeemer— He is the one who brings salvation. Andrea Pisano (1330) Jesus gives high praise for John the Disciples Visit John the Baptist in Prison Source: liturgy.slu.edu Baptist but reminds us, “the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” Jesus gives hope to those who suffer. Each one of us has been purchased at a great price—the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. We have been washed clean through the waters of baptism and have become a new creation in Christ. We are no longer children of darkness but children of the light. We are to live our lives with our eyes fixed on Jesus and the kingdom of heaven will be ours. John the Baptist teaches us to recognize who Jesus is and to follow Him. He is the fulfillment of our hope and promise of everlasting life and peace. God bless you, Father Ron

Thought for the Week From Pope Francis

Even if it is not always easy to approach young people, progress has been made in two areas: the awareness that the entire community is called to evangelize and educate the young, and the urgent need for the young to exercise greater leadership. We should recognize that…many young people are making common cause before the problems of our world and are taking up various forms of activism and volunteer work. Some take part in the life of the Church as members of service groups and various missionary initiatives…. (Joy of the Gospel, 103)

Blessed Sacrament’s Christmas Tree Sale Now Underway In a special way we thank John Stacks for his dedication and commitment to our annual Christmas Tree Sale. After more than 30 years of organizing and overseeing the tree sale, he will not be able to do so any longer because of health issues. We are grateful for his dedication and support of this annual sale which has supported so many charities that assist the needy in our community and various ministries in our parish. The tree sale will continue this year as it has in the past and the proceeds will benefit the needy. We have subcontracted the program this year, but are looking for volunteers to organize and oversee the program next year. Open daily 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Daystar Gallery Exhibition: “Christmas Past” Daystar Gallery presents watercolors and poetry by parishioner Jane Simanis: “Christmas Past” from December 13, 2016 to January 6, 2017. A reception will be held on Sunday, December 18, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Christian Family Movement Ministry “They shall (melt their assault rifles) into plowshares and their (handguns) into pruning hooks.” Adapted from Isaiah 2:1-5. A Prayer For Help In Ending Violence Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have prayed in times of war, disaster and illness. We come to you Father and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which give respect to the life and dignity of all people... We ask you this through Christ our Lord.

BS Young Family Christmas Celebration and Cookie Exchange All families with children between newborn and 5 years old are invited to join the Young Family Ministry for our Christmas celebration and cookie exchange on Saturday, Dec. 17, 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. We will be sharing some delectable treats and have a special holiday story for the little ones. If you are interested in participating or have any questions, contact Anthony & Elizabeth Angelo: [email protected].

A Christmas Request SHARE @ BS has a growing number of requests for food from people who are facing difficulties in these hard economic times. Through SHARE, we are able to give them $43 of food at a cost to us of $21. At Christmas we would like also to give these people a ham or turkey for their holiday dinner. If you can donate $40 to SHARE @ Blessed Sacrament it will help your parish serve this need and bring some comfort to other families. So far this year, we have donated in excess of $22,000 (a $44,000 value) to those in need. The requests for food have increased sharply – by 62% – during the past three years. You may want to consider donating $21 a month which is the cost we pay for $43 of food. We are giving real quality food – to real people – who have real needs – in our neighborhoods. And, this food bargain is also available to you. Try it –you’ll like it. For your convenience, you can use the gold colored donation flier at the church entrances or send a donation to the BS Parish Office – Attention SHARE @ BS. Thank you.

Visit Your Parish Library Music for Advent Patrick Kavanaugh, in his book, Spiritual Lives of the Great Composers, uncovers a common strand in each of twenty musical geniuses. Their personalities are as different as their music but they share a deep Christian faith. The following compact discs are samples of music from many centuries and composers and will enrich your Advent preparations. Advent Gregorian Chants, Capella Gregoriana. The heritage of monophonic melodies, at first part of an oral tradition and then written down in the 9th, 10th and 11th centuries, is thought to be the basis of Pope Gregory’s cycle of chants for the church year. The chants on this disc were developed at the Church of Notre Dame in Paris. Christmas Oratio (live), Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev This Russian composer is the author of a six-part series of books about Jesus Christ, as well as a major representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in his own country and abroad. He recently talked about his life and faith in an interview (Inside the Vatican, October 2016, p. 43). The recording is of the first American performance, taped live at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and featuring, among other distinguished singers, boys’ choirs from Washington DC and from Moscow. Mount St. Mary’s Seminary Vespers Schola: An Advent and Christmas Collection This is the second selection of sacred music from the Emmitsburg seminary, featuring sacred music regularly sung there. The pieces are familiar and include Bach, Vivaldi, Brahms, and a setting of “Gesu Bambino” (P.A.Yon) resonantly sung by soprano Veronica Smaldone. Compact discs are arranged by title in the library. Please fill out a borrower’s card with your name when you borrow them.

Outreach Be a Secret Santa in 2016! There is still time to donate to purchase grocery gift cards for needy parishioners at Blessed Sacrament’s sister parish, St. Thomas More, in southeast Washington. Also, donations may be made on the parish website. Please donate before Monday, December 23.

Chimes Chatter Bells and their various effects - This 1936 story of the Angelus as told by a priest: a gentleman called on this priest one day asking why the hammer of his church’s Angelus bell always strikes 21 times (3-3-3-12)? The priest answered not knowing why precisely 21 times, that although living in the rectory next door to church, he had never observed that the bell struck precisely 21 times. “Yes,” continued the inquirer, “the bell is struck thrice three different times, and then Photo by Joe Bozik in ringing that follows, strikes 12 times more.” Of course, the priest jokingly replied the explanation was the janitor had formed the habit of pulling the rope six times for a double-striking after triple tolls. But the “knowing” priest asked his inquirer whether he knew the significance of ringing the bells in that Angelus manner three times a day. The inquirer responded he did not know. The priest replied the reason is far more important than the ringing act itself, explaining that the Incarnation of the Son of God was the greatest event in all history; that round it revolves the whole Christian religion; that through it the human race was reclaimed for their Heavenly Father, and the Catholic Church believes that the people should be reminded of this great event morning, noon, and night by the ringing of the Angelus bell. This inquirer, who came to the priest interested only in mechanics of the bell-ringing, was so impressed with the significance of bell-ringing that he resolved to study the faith. He is now a converted Catholic, and the priest administered to him the Sacrament of Confirmation (source: Washington Post, November 29, 1936). Share your chimes’ memory? Contact [email protected]

Third Sunday of Advent

Christmas 2016 Alternative Gift Giving List

Advent is a time of quiet anticipation and hope for Christ’s rebirth. Often we focus elsewhere getting caught up in frantic preparations for the secular “holiday season” searching endlessly for gifts. We would like it to be different but each year for many of us, our Christmas observance is more a tribute to consumerism than to Jesus Christ. Instead of spending too much time and money buying material items for loved ones, you can give gifts of sharing benefiting others. The Alternative Gift Giving Catalog designates organizations in need identified by the Social Services office at Blessed Sacrament. This catalog provides the opportunity to sponsor services while reducing the commercialism of the Advent and Christmas Seasons. When you place an order from this catalog, you will receive a personalized card specifying the charitable service which you are sponsoring. Simply present the card as your gift. Please indicate if your gift is a donation requiring no card. Complete the order form on the last page. Return the completed form for your gift selections and check made payable to Blessed Sacrament Church. Please deliver it no later than December 20. The address is: Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada St., NW, Washington, DC 20015-2423, ATTN: Michele Bowe. Questions? Contact Michele Bowe: 301.951.6427 or [email protected].
