From the Pastor My Dear Parishioners, The Third Sunday of Advent is also called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is Latin for “rejoice” and this word is taken from the Entrance Antiphon for this Sunday’s Mass: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! The Lord is near! (Phil. 4:4-5).” Today the liturgical vestments are rose-colored to remind us that we are now more than half way to the celebration of Christmas and to step up our spiritual preparations. But this rejoicing is a sign also of our hope in Christ, Who, when He comes in glory, will free us from the bonds of sin and death forever. Beginning December 17, Holy Mother Church makes use of the O Antiphons which are beautiful ways of reflecting on the long awaited Messiah. The “O” Antiphons are usually sung at Vespers (Evening Prayer). The hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” is based on these antiphons. Each antiphon refers to a title of Our Savior as He is anticipated from of old. One might prayerfully meditate on an antiphon each day: Dec. 17th: “O Wisdom (Sapientia); Dec. 18th: “O Sacred Lord (Adonai); Dec. 19th: “O Flower of Jesse’s Stem (Radix Jesse); Dec. 20th: “O Key of David (Clavis David); Dec. 21st: “O Radiant Dawn (Oriens); Dec. 22nd: “O King of all the nations (O Rex Gentium); and Dec, 23rd: O Emmanuel (Emmanuel) which means “God with us.” In Christ, Fr. St. Monica Grief Support Group – The New Day Journal Sessions Have you suffered the loss of a loved one? St. Monica will have a Grief Support Group beginning on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, 7pm-9pm, Room 212. Meetings will be held once a week for 10 weeks. You will meet in small groups with others going through similar experiences. Sessions are free and led by trained lay facilitators. The only cost is $10 for the book. Sessions will also be offered in Spanish starting on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. Stephen Ministers are members of St. Monica Church who go through 50 hours of caregiving training and then work alongside our Priests and Deacons in providing emotional and spiritual support to people who are going through a difficult time such as divorce, grief, hospitalization or loneliness. RETIRO DE PROCLAMADORES Servir en la Mesa del Señor como proclamador de la Palabra de Dios es un privilegio especial y un ministerio al cual se llama a personas que tienen la destreza especial en su habilidad para leer, tienen los sacramentos de Bautismo y Confirmación y están solteros o si están viviendo con su pareja están casados por la Iglesia. Los proclamadores se reúnen semanalmente para estudiar la Lectio Divina, (estudio de la Biblia) la cual invita al lector a vivir la Palabra de Dios en su diario vivir. Cada dos meses tienen reunión general para recibir Formación Continua, y una vez al año asisten a un retiro Espiritual. ¿Te sientes llamado a ser Proclamador y vivir este ministerio durante el ano litúrgico?
