THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS; AGAIN I SAY, REJOICE. INDEED, THE LORD IS NEAR. PHILIPPIANS 4:4-5 Rejoice in the Lord always (2)! Great in our midst is the Holy One of Israel, a mighty savior (1,Ps). It is he whom John foretold; it is he who will baptize in the Holy Spirit (3). FIRST READING—ZEPHANIAH 3:14-18a Shout for joy! Sing joyfully! Be glad and exult! The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior. PSALM—ISAIAH 12 Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel. SECOND READING—PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7 Rejoice! The Lord is near. Make your requests known to God.

REJOICE Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God’s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PHONE PRAYER TREE

If you have an urgent prayer request, please call: Claudette Warren at 442-7965 or Elisa Victorino (Spanish) at 935-7156.

GOSPEL—LUKE 3:10-18 John tells his hearers to share their possessions with the needy; be honest; do not threaten or accuse others falsely.

T REASURE S T FROM OUR RADITIONS

Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or the colors of the vestments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a year. Today, Gaudete Sunday, is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for Rejoice! This year’s Gospel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary’s visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy. Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent, but many parishes employ different hues for each season, trying to keep them distinct. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor parishes used unornamented plain cloth for vestments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly purple, difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the color of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, reminding many people of Mary s presence at the heart of the Advent mystery. That theology is largely unplanned: it’s all because of the clams! James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

O GOD, who see how your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord’s Nativity, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LEGION OF MARY meets every Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in the room 229. INVITATION TO ADVENT RECONCILIATION 2018

Beloved, all of you are invited to our Advent Reconciliation Service on Thursday, December 20. As we see in Genesis 3 with the confession of Eve after the sin, anytime we confess our sins, Satan our enemy is denounced and defeated. When we confess, we strike him on his head, and his power is broken in our lives. This is why confession is so important. For those involved in our Perpetual Adoration, Penance is the fifth stone on our spiritual path. Monthly confession keeps us close to God. SCHEDULE 6:00 PM 6:05 PM 6:30 PM 7:00 PM

MARRIAGE MOMENTS

by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

"Rejoice in the Lord always...The Lord is near." (Philippians 4:4-5) Sometimes pressure preparing for Christmas can blind us to what's really important. Start by remembering that Christ lives in your beloved. Pause. Take time to rejoice in each other today.

PARENTING POINTERS

by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

As your family prepares Christmas gifts for each other, this is a good time to discuss with your child how to share their older but still good toys, clothes, etc. "Whoever has 2 cloaks should share with the person who has none." (Luke 3-11)

STEPPING STONES During this time of year, we are reminded through various media of the importance of giving to others. Many charitable donations are made toward the end of the year. These end-of-year donations help ministries and charitable organizations continue their work among those less fortunate. These donations can also provide the donor with tax benefits.

A Guideline for Donations “Not equal gifts, but equal giving” In Mark 12:41-43, Jesus praised the widow who gave two copper coins to the temple because it represented a sacrificial gift –it was “all she had.” As you prayerfully consider your donations, please remember St. Joseph Catholic Church and School. In our diocese, the biblical tithe of 10% is suggested with the following recommendation: • 5% -your parish (St. Joseph Church – main collection/general fund) • 4% -other charities (such as our Building Fund*, school, secular or faithbased charities) • 1% to CASA (Catholic Arkansas Sharing Appeal)

Income Annually 10% $30,000 $60,000 $80,000 $100,000

$3,000 $6,000 $8,000 $10,000

$250.00 $500.00 $666.67 $833.33

Monthly 5% 4% $125.00 $250.00 $333.33 $416.61

$100.00 $200.00 $266.67 $333.32

1% $25.00 $50.00 $66.66 $83.30

*As our parish continues to work toward completing our Master Plan that began in 1995, every person makes a difference. To those who contribute to the Building Fund regularly, we say ‘thank you’ for your dedication over the years. As we plan for our new church, we encourage you to consider increasing your donation. If you have given in the past and are not currently giving, please consider restarting your donation. If you are new to the parish or have been unable to contribute to the Building Fund, we encourage you to join your fellow parishioners in making a monthly contribution.

Together, as one body, we can pay off our loan for the land where our church will be built. All donations over and above the loan payoff will go toward a freestanding church.

Loan Repayment Progress • October Payment: $73,410.98 (loan and 14 principal payments) • November Payment: $15,580.72 (loan and 3 principal payments) • December Payment: $19,387.39 (loan and 4 principal payments)

Loan Amount: $553, 211.75 Loan Balance: $76,511.56

NWA CATHOLIC RESPECT LIFE NEWS

JANUARY 19: On Saturday evening, January 19, St. Vincent de Paul will host a "Procession of Roses" following Communion at the 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening Mass. Forty-six representatives will offer a white rose in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to abortion since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision which legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. The procession begins with a person born in 1973 and continues through 2018. The final rose will be given by a pregnant woman due in 2019 to represent those who will lose their lives in 2019. Each person with a rose represents over 1,000,000 lives lost in that year. The procession will last between 11-13 minutes and is quite powerful. Please mark your calendar and plan on attending this solemn remembrance of those who have died unborn. We are now in the process of looking for people born between 1973 - 2018. The years already filled are: '83, '85, '87, '91, '97, '99, 2000, '04, '05, '08, and '16. Would you, or do you know someone, who would be willing to carry a rose? Please e-mail Sheila Pursell at [email protected] or Suzie Perry at [email protected]. JANUARY 20: If you're not one of the many people traveling to Washington D.C. for the National March for Life, or to Little Rock for the Diocesan Mass & Eucharistic Procession followed by AR March for Life at the Capital, please plan on attending the Fayetteville March for Life on Sunday, January 20th at 2:00. Two starting locations: Mission Blvd Baptist Church, 2006 E. Mission Blvd and McNair Middle School, 3030 Mission Blvd. We will walk the 2.8 miles to Planned Parenthood on Crossover for a short rally.

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Abre tu corazón a Jesús!!!
