From the Pastor A farmer took a piece of bad earth and made things flourish. Proud of his accomplishments, he asked his minister to come by and see what he had done. The minister was impressed. “That’s the tallest corn I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen anything as big as those melons. Praise the Lord!” He went on that way about every crop, praising the Lord for it all. Finally the farmer couldn’t take it anymore. “Reverend,” he said, “I wish you could have seen this place when the Lord was doing it by himself.” Today, the church has us reflect today on two remarkable women. They were not famous in their own time. In fact we would describe them to be no different from the many women we see on the news reports from the Middle East today. Living simple lives, working every day to provide for the basic needs of their family, they were not the type of people we would expect to transform the world. Elizabeth was an older woman, beyond child bearing. She was considered by most to be at odds with God in some way because she had not been able to experience the joy of being a mother. But, now she was only a few more months away from giving birth to a son who would be declared the greatest man ever born by Jesus himself. Mary was on the opposite side of the scale by years – just reaching the age to be married, betrothed to Joseph, her life seemed to be predictable. It would be just like that of all the other women her age in her small village. She would marry, have children, live to her old age surrounded by children and grandchildren. But, God is full of surprises. God was doing some amazing things in the lives of these two women, but, it is clear that both of them gave all the credit to God. Immediately after accepting the
angel’s invitation, Mary declares, “My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” And she did not sit in contemplation of the miraculous things happening in her life. Instead, she went in haste to help her cousin Elizabeth. And when she arrived, Elizabeth’s immediate reaction was “How does this happen to me?” She could not believe that the mother of the Messiah would give her any thought at all. The gospels do not tell us what happened with these two women as the next few months moved on. They must have marveled at God’s goodness and power. They must have wondered and worried about what the future would bring. They must have encouraged each other in knowing that God would be faithful in caring for them and their child. The farmer didn’t take the piece of land and make it flourish. God did. It’s an important lesson for us to reflect on as we consider the example of Mary and Elizabeth. God wants peace in the world, and still there is so much anger and prejudice and selfishness. He will make peace happen each time we choose to smile, and welcome another, and put aside our anger and forgive. God does not want anyone in our rich nation to be without a home, or hungry or left alone to face the world. He has filled our hands with blessings, and invites us to join him in touching the life of someone who is not sure that God cares for them right now. Mary’s Son entered the world to show us the way to make this world what God wants it to be through love and generosity and service to others. God is going to make it happen. The surprising thing is that he has chosen to ask us to join him in this important work. Only we can decide if we will choose to do our part, or choose to leave it to another. –Fr. News & Events The St Monica Pro-Life Ministry invites you to participate in a “baby shower” to benefit the crisis pregnancy centers of Dallas. Please drop by the baby bassinet located in the church narthex, beginning the weekend of Dec 26-27th, to get a list of needed baby items. Gifts will be accepted at the narthex before or after all Masses, the weekend of Jan 9-10th or dropped during business hours at the church’s office. Knights of Columbus Notre Dame Assembly New Year’s Eve Dance Come join St Monica’s Knights as they welcome in 2016 with an evening of live dance music by the Nobles of Note Orchestra, cash bar, raffle, door prizes, hot/ cold hors d’oeuvres, midnight champagne toast and a buffet breakfast. St. Monica Grief Support Ministry Have you suffered the loss of a loved one? St. Monica will hold another Grief Support Ministry beginning on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, 7 pm-9 pm, Room 212. Meetings will be held once a week for 10 weeks and you will meet in small groups with others going through similar experiences. Sessions are led by trained lay facilitators. The support group is free, with only the cost of $10 for the book. Sessions will also be offered in Spanish starting on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Cuarto Domingo de Adviento Santísimo Sacramento El Santísimo está expuesto en la capilla de lunes a viernes, de 9am a medianoche y los domingos de 6pm. a medianoche. Durante la semana hay momentos de adoración y alabanza en comunidad: los martes de 8pm. a 9pm; los segundos viernes de Mes de 9pm a 10 pm; y los primeros viernes de mes de 7:30pm. a 8:30pm. Aprender a orar para aprender a vivir Los Talleres de Oración y Vida son una nueva forma de evangelización más viva y con una visión más positiva de lo que se ha mostrado siempre. Año de la Misericordia El Papa Francisco nos invita a abandonar “toda forma de miedo y temor” y vivir con alegría el encuentro con Cristo, que puede transformar la vida de cada hombre, así como participar en este Jubileo que muestra “la profundidad de la misericordia del Padre que acoge a todos”. Estamos llamados a poner en práctica las obras espirituales y corporales todos los días, en cada oportunidad que se nos presente. ¿Cuáles de estas obras necesitamos poner en práctica? Dar de comer al hambriento; Dar de beber al sediento; Dar posada al necesitado; Vestir al desnudo; Visitar al enfermo; Socorrer a los presos; Enterrar a los muertos; Enseñar al que no sabe; Dar buen consejo al que lo necesita; Corregir al que está en error; Perdonar las injurias; Consolar al triste; Sufrir con paciencia los defectos de los demás; Rogar a Dios por vivos y difuntos.

Domingo de la Sagrada Familia El 27 de Diciembre es domingo de la Sagrada Familia, les invitamos hacer de este día un día especial con su familia. Reciban la bendición de Dios al asistir a la Santa Eucaristía y extiendan sus bendiciones haciendo algo especial por algún familiar. Tal vez visitar alguien que está distante por malos entendidos, a un abuelito/a o un tío que necesite compañía. Llamando alguien que esta solo. Pongamos en práctica las obras de Misericordia, en las cosas sencillas que transforman el corazón.

De El Pastor Un granjero tomo un pedazo de tierra mala y la hizo florecer. Orgulloso de sus logros, le pidió a su parroco que fuera a ver lo que había hecho. El ministro quedo impresionado. “Ese es el maíz mas grande que he visto. Nunca había visto unos melones tan grandes como esos. Bendito sea el Señor!” Así lo hizo con toda la cosecha, alabando al Señor por todo. Finalmente, el granjero no se pudo contener. “Reverendo,” dijo, “Me hubiera gustado que hubiera visto este lugar cuando el Señor estaba trabajando solo.” Hoy, la iglesia nos invita a reflexionar sobre dos mujeres maravillosas. No eran famosas en su tiempo. De hecho, hoy día los noticieros pudieran describirlas no tan diferentes como a las mujeres del Medio Este. Viviendo una vida simple, trabajando cada día para proveer las necesidades básicas de su familia, no serían el tipo de personas que la gente pensaría que pudieran cambiar el mundo. Isabel era una mujer de edad avanzada para tener hijos. Muchos consideraban que estaba peleada con Dios porque de alguna manera no había podido experimentar el gozo de ser madre. Pero, ahora estaba a meses de dar a luz a un hijo al que Jesus declararo más grande antes que el naciera. María estaba al lado opuesto de la escala por años, apenas llegando a la edad de casarse, estaba comprometida con José, su vida pareciera estar predicha. Sería como todas las mujeres de su edad que vivían en un pueblo chico. Se casaría, tendría niños, llegaría a vieja rodeada de niños y nietos. Pero Dios está lleno de sorpresas. Dios estaba haciendo cosas maravillosas en la vida de estas dos mujeres, era claro que ellas le daban todo el crédito a Dios. Inmediatamente, después de aceptar la invitación del ángel, María dijo,
“Mi alma proclama la grandeza del Señor.” No se sentó a contemplar las maravillas que pasaban en su vida. Sino al contrario corrió ayudar a su prima Isabel. Cuando llego, la reacción inmediata de Isabel fue, “¿Quién soy yo para que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?” No podía creer que la madre del Mesías pudiera pensar en ella. Los evangelios no nos dicen que paso con estas dos mujeres en los siguientes meses. Se han de haber maravillado de la bondad y el poder de Dios. Se han de haber maravillado y preocupado sobre lo que el futuro les traería. Se han de haber motivado mutuamente sabiendo que Dios seria fiel y les cuidaría a ellas y a sus hijos. El granjero no tomo un pedazo de tierra y la hizo florecer. Fue Dios. Es una enseñanza importante que debemos considerar el ejemplo de María e Isabel. Dios quiere paz en el mundo, y aún hay tanto coraje, prejuicios y egoísmos. El da la paz cada vez que decidimos sonreír, recibir al hermano, dejar a lado nuestro enojo y perdonar. Dios no quiere que nadie en esta nación rica este sin hogar, con hambre o solo en este mundo. Ha llenado nuestras manos de bendiciones y nos invita a tacar la vida de alguien que no está seguro que le importa a Dios. El Hijo de María vino al mundo para mostrarnos el camino que Dios quiere llevemos con amor, generosidad y servicio a otros. Dios hará que esto pase. La cosa sorprendente es que ha escogido que nos unamos a Él en este trabajo tan importante. Solo tenemos que poner de nuestra parte o dejárselo al otro. –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk
