I don’t know how to begin to thank Claremont and its residents, businesses and colleges. We have had a warm welcome from everybody in the city and the Claremont Chamber. I truly truly believe that Claremont is the Inland Empires hidden gem with so many amazing restaurants, amazing boutiques, and shops. The combination and mix of all the businesses of Claremont really play a huge part on the success and the longevity of the business community and truly deliver exceptional value and offerings to the local residents, students and visitors near and far. My hope and dream is to have a business that can make everybody connected with this beautiful city proud, and that one day we would be called one of their own. My experience with the many business owners I have come in contact with has energized me to be a major contributor to the collective efforts of Claremont. Victor ValVerde, Kut Haus Salon

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Chamber Board, Ambassadors, and all the committee members who meet on a monthly basis to work on the programs for the Chamber. And, to you the members who support the Chamber by attending our events. As I’m writing this it’s just a few days before Thanksgiving and, for me this is the best time of the year. I get to cook and the house is filled with all of the wonderful smells of the holiday. I get to be with my family especially my 2 grandsons, and give thanks for all that we have. As we move into to the holiday season, with all the hustle and bustle, we sometimes forget what this season is all about. For me this is the time of year to be with your family and friends and enjoy their company. On behalf of the Chamber team Marlene, Veronica and Robin, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year. Maureen

From the Desk of Sergeant David De Metz

Preparing for the Holiday Season The holidays can be a special time to enjoy family and friends and to reflect on what is important in your life. With this in mind, the Claremont Police Department would like to offer you some tips to keep you, your loved ones, your home and your business safe, this holiday season. Situational awareness is the key to prevent you from becoming the victim of a crime. This is true all year round, but can be particularly important during the holiday season. During the holidays, theft-related crimes tend to increase. When using an ATM machine, always protect your PIN by not allowing others to see you typing the numbers onto the touchscreen or key pad. After removing your money from the ATM, count it where others are not watching and be aware of people following you. While shopping for gifts, watch for others that may be watching you. Thieves have been known to follow unsuspecting victims. Never leave gifts or other valuables in plain view in your vehicle and always lock your vehicles. In addition, always lock all of the doors and windows to your home and do not put presents on display in the front windows. Thieves have also been known to follow delivery trucks dropping off gifts and other packages to homes. Once the packages are left, the thief steals them. If you are on vacation or know you will not be home on the day of delivery, have a trusted neighbor pick up the package immediately. On the topic of traveling during the holidays, consider having your mail and newspaper temporarily stopped. The Claremont Police Department provides a Vacation House Check program for residents. Community Patrol volunteers staff this program and perform the house checks. If something appears suspicious, they immediately radio on-duty police officers who respond. You can sign up for this free program by completing a Vacation House Check application and bringing

the printed form to the Claremont Police Department (570 W. Bonita Ave.) to be processed. The applications are available at the Police Department during lobby hours (7:00 AM to 10:00 PM). Applications will not be accepted online or by mail. If you own a business in town, look for people displaying suspicious behavior. There are no hard and fast rules that define “suspicious behavior.” If someone’s behavior leads you to feel uneasy, watch them closely. The person may be planning to steal from you. Do not hesitate to call the Police Department. A common indication of someone who may be planning on stealing is someone who is intently looking toward the areas inside the business where the walls meet the ceiling. The person may be looking for video surveillance cameras. Also, watch for someone who is intently looking around the store to see where you or other employees are positioned. If the person is not asking for assistance from you and is not focusing on your merchandise, they may be looking for an opportunity to steal when no one is looking. Also, remember that sometimes thieves work in groups. A member (or two) from the group will attempt to distract you while other members of the group steal. Be observant of any larger group of shoppers that appear to be together. Also, ensure that you and your employees adhere to strict policies regarding the sale of merchandise. Examples include checking identification when required and confirming the validity of checks. Fraud comes in many different forms and is a big problem during the holiday season. The Claremont Police Department hopes that you find these holiday safety tips helpful and we wish you and your family a safe holiday season. If you need additional information regarding holiday safety tips, please call the Claremont Police Department’s Administrative Services Bureau at (909) 3995409.

Foothill Gold Line Update On October 22, LA Metro announced that passenger service will begin to the Foothill Gold Line Stations in Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa on Saturday, March 5, 2016. The announcement came one month after the project reached substantial completion on time and on budget and was turned over by the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority to Metro for pre-revenue service. The historic announcement was made by Metro Chairman, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark RidleyThomas and Metro CEO Phil Washington at a press conference held at Metro headquarters. They were surrounded at the press conference by other members of the Metro board, including Los Angeles County Supervisors Michael Antonovich and Hilda Solis, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Inglewood Mayor James Butts, Duarte Councilman John Fasana, Los Angeles Councilman Mike Bonin, Lakewood Councilwoman Diane DuBois, Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker and Carrie Bowen. Foothill Gold Line CEO Habib F. Balian was also present, along with members of the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority board of directors and mayors and city council members representing the Foothill Gold Line corridor cities. Now that the countdown to passenger service has begun, the cities of Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa – along with transit service providers – are able to make adjustments to bus feeder services in preparation for the tens of thousands of local residents ready to ride. The Construction Authority’s website now features a countdown clock to the start of inaugural service. Also in October, the Metro board heard a report on the draft 2017 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and a framework for a potential November 2016 ballot measure to fund new transportation projects in Los Angeles County. Over the coming months, the Metro board will be discussing the ballot measure and the expenditure plan that would include projects to be funded. As of now, staff is recommending including $1.019 billion from a future tax measure to complete the Foothill Gold Line from Glendora to Montclair. New California Decision and Task Force that Could Affect Employers in 2016 By Jaenene Maldonado –PHR Consultant Many employers are aware of some of the new laws coming up in 2016 but there are some recent decisions made by various CA government agencies that could affect employers in the coming year ahead. There also is a Labor Enforcement Task Force The Labor Enforcement Task Force (LETF) The Labor Enforcement Task Force, under the direction of the Department of Industrial Relations, is a coalition of California State government enforcement agencies that work together and in partnership with local agencies to combat the underground economy. In this joint effort, information and resources are shared to ensure employees are paid properly and have safe work conditions and honest, law-abiding businesses. Members of LETF include: Division of Occupational Safety & Health (Cal/OSHA), Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE), Employment Development Department (EDD), Contractors State Licensing Board (CSLB), California Department of Insurance (CDI), Board of Equalization (BOE) , Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) , State Attorney General (DOJ) , Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) LEFT Enforcement activity involves joint interagency inspections. In October 2015, of the 80 business inspections conducted, 93% were found out of compliance with $1.3 million in initial assessments. Some of the main issues of non-compliance were: exposing employees to unsafe working conditions, failure to carry a valid workers’ compensation policy and not paying minimum wage and overtime. Additional enforcement highlights include: • All of the garment and restaurant businesses inspected were found to be out of compliance with labor laws enforced by at least one partner agency. • DLSE found significant violations in the pallet industry with $639,190 in initial assessments. • Cal/OSHA issued 8 Orders Prohibiting Use to manufacturing employers, requiring them to correct hazardous conditions that put workers in immediate danger of serious injuries and fatalities.

they can review any of your policy and practices and share those findings with the agencies listed above. This could result in additional visits or multiple citations. Employers should make sure they are in compliance with all aspects of HR and Safety. CALIFORNIA OSHA Wins Indoor Heat Illness Decision Employers that have employees that work outside have known for years about Heat Illness regulations but a recent case (Cal/OSHA vs. Tri-State Staffing (TSI), a temporary staffing agency, and warehouse operator National Distribution Center (NDC)) changed this regulation to now could include employers that work inside in hot conditions. The case stemmed from Cal/OSHA citations against two employers because their Injury Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP) failed to effectively address the hazard of indoor heat and an employee that became seriously ill from heat stroke from working in a warehouse where temperatures were 100 degrees and was subsequently hospitalized for three days. The funny thing is I have personally developed numerous Injury Illness Prevention Plans and Safety Programs for various employers over the last 10 years and have always told my clients with warehouse, restaurant or manufacturing environments that have employees exposed or working in hot conditions to train them on Heat Illness even though it wasn’t required at the time. Well now based on the Appeals decision those businesses MUST do exactly that. But not only should they train on Heat Illness but make sure they have a written policy in place and a contingency plan of what to do if an employee falls ill to heat illness. What should an employer do? First and foremost, make sure you have a current IIPP and Safety Program if required to do so….most industries and organizations with 10 employees or more are required to have a written plan. Make sure you are following the plan and also providing on-going training as required that could include Heat Illness if your work environment has heat related conditions.

Other take -away from this decision- Both the employer and the temp agencies in this case were cited. Employers should make sure that if • CSLB licenses and regulates contractors in 44 classifications and has they have temporary employees through a third party vendor that the temporary agencies are also complying with Cal/OSHA regulations as specialized insight with regard to the construction industry. CSLB well as all CA and Federal laws since issued 3 businesses with stop orders. For more information on this recent decision see: http://www.dir. ca.gov/DIRNews/2015/2015-101.pdf

What should an employer do? This task force should be eye-opening for all employers. In previous years if a government agency walked in they could only look at their specific area of law. With this task force if any visit your workplace
