hile studying the monarchy in the media as a history student at the University of Cambridge, Daisy Goodwin read the diaries of Queen Victoria. The daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn and German-born Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Alexandrina Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, just a few weeks after her 18th birthday. In 1840, she married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The couple had nine children – to Goodwin, an early clue that perhaps the Victorian era wasn’t quite as prudish as reputation serves. Further proof was an interesting passage in one of Victoria’s more than 100 diaries. “I read this entry about Albert wearing white cashmere breeches with nothing underneath, and I got a strong sense of the woman behind this.You think of Victoria as an old lady but you realize she was a passionate teenager who liked men,” Goodwin said in a telephone interview from London. Goodwin is the scriptwriter of the eight-hour, sevenpart series Victoria, a Masterpiece production beginning Jan. 15 on WGCU TV, as well as the companion novel of historical fiction by the same title published by St. Martin’s Press. The short chapters of the book read like scenes – not surprisingly, Goodwin said people tell her she is a visual writer – and paint the picture of an independent young woman who demonstrated strength and wisdom beyond her years. And apparently beyond her stature, as she was barely 5 feet tall. These qualities were necessary to thwart the selfish attempts at manipulation by everyone around her. This was in an era when girls who would grow up to be ladies of rank would learn just “watercolours and the pianoforte,” Goodwin writes in the novel. Goodwin implies that it was to protect their own status that Victoria’s mother and her mother’s companion, Sir John Conroy, kept young Victoria “under house arrest,” as she called it, throughout her childhood. “She was not allowed to choose her own friends or really to have any freedom,” Goodwin said. Her companions were her spaniel, Dash, and a collection of dolls. “But unlike a lot of Victorian women she was never cowed, she wasn’t submissive, she wasn’t afraid of her own contradictions. She was a powerful figure with a huge impact on the 19th century,” Goodwin said. “Even though women didn’t have the vote and were considered the property of
their husbands, with a woman in charge then, she had to have made a powerful difference in the way women were perceived. She was queen, mother, wife, and yet she was powerful. It shifted the paradigm, really.” Although at 18 she was no longer bound by others’ restrictions, nearly everyone she knew would try to control her. But Victoria would continue to fend off these challenges to her autonomy – most of them based on her anatomy and her singlehood. In the aftermath of an unpopular move, in which she sent a doctor to examine a pious lady-inwaiting whom she erroneously suspected of pregnancy, people close to her gossiped that she had gone mad. As Goodwin writes, “… there was the general belief that young unmarried women were susceptible to hysteria, which could only be cured by marriage and motherhood.” Victoria followed a succession of ill-behaved male monarchs who kept mistresses and were indiscreet. Despite plenty of rumor and innuendo, she was the first to have remained true to her spouse, Goodwin said. She and Albert had a faithful marriage, Goodwin said, “and that was a rarity.” Goodwin said the film version of her story covers a slightly longer time period, but is still just a few years of what would be a reign of more than 63 years. n Watch WGCU HDTV Victoria The seven-part series premieres Sunday, Jan. 15. Sword The Way of the

illiam Shakespeare rapidly churned out dramas, and generally was not short on words – at least not the spoken kind. Stage directions were another matter. Since plenty of his characters die by the sword, whether in battles or duels or sneak attack, this left a gap to be filled in theatrical productions. Enter the choreographer of staged combat. Southwest Florida Fencing Academy owner Charles Johnson is a self-described “history freak.” He has staged a few combat scenes for local productions. And although he doesn’t claim to be an expert on this, he has suited up in Elizabethan gear, armed himself with vintage-era weapons, and demonstrated swordplay of the era at schools and libraries in Southwest Florida for years.
This month on WGCU TV, the three-part series The Hollow Crown combines history plays HenryVI, Part I; HenryVI, Part II; and Richard III. They include plenty of skirmishes, including a battle for control of England’s throne in what’s known as the Wars of the Roses.

We visited Johnson to learn a little bit about the fighting we might see in the series. Johnson and Florida Gulf Coast University student Jason Moore, who has been fencing since age 9, met us in period garb: pantaloons, blouses, fencing jackets, leather boots and some very serious weapons. First lesson: Henry VI, Richard III and all the other fighting nobility would have said swords by pronouncing the W. Theirs probably were broadswords and rapiers, the latter being the most often used dueling weapon, Johnson said. Men of the 15th century were a “quarrelsome lot,” Johnson said. While the Wars of the Roses were about who would wear the crown of the monarch, plenty of fighting took place on the level of the street brawl. “It was my gang against your gang kind of thing,” he said. “You’re on my turf and I want you off.” Matters of honor were determined by broadsword, rapier and dagger, often by duels. It was the era of “might makes right” rather than judge and jury. Weapons and combat of European history eventually tamed into a sport – one Johnson has been teaching for more than two decades in a nondescript space tucked back from Fowler Avenue in Fort Myers. n wgcu.org

can learn right along with the kids when the latest episode of Curious Kids debuts this month. Titled Lakes, Rivers & Estuaries, the show takes viewers on a trek throughout Southwest Florida’s watery worlds without the need for boots or bug spray. Jaden, Sophie, Andrew, Sierra and Eva trace water from Lake Okeechobee down the Caloosahatchee River into the Charlotte Harbor estuaries and the Gulf of Mexico, stopping along the way to fish for bass, learn about salinity and the creatures whose lives depend on water quality, and hear from experts such as Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist Barron Moody and Florida Gulf Coast University’s Win Everham. State Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen gives them some ideas for civic engagement on water quality and Jaden’s mom gives them tips on environmentally friendly cleaning. “Since Lake Okeechobee and water issues were at the forefront of news stories in 2016, we thought it would be a good time to offer kids and their families an in-depth look at the subject,” said writer and producer Rosmary Emery. “Understanding the landscape and its functionality is key to conserving it for future generations.” WGCU premiered Curious Kids in spring 2011 as Southwest Florida’s only public broadcasting program for kids starring kids. Since then, international singer/songwriter/educator Emery has directed 14 programs, including the regional Emmy Awardwinning episode, What Is aWatershed? n

the street, it would be hard to miss Kevin Sylvester, who as half of the duo Black Violin uses the stage name Kev Marcus. “I’m a 6-foot-2, 260-pound black guy,” he says. He is used to his appearance provoking certain reactions. But he also observed from a young age that reactions are different when he holds a violin. “It’s a tool. A way I can change people’s perceptions of me.” Along with childhood friend and viola player Wil B., Marcus hopes that he is continuing to change perceptions about music and race. Music critics usually describe Black Violin’s sound as a combination of classical, hip-hop, jazz and R&B, a “multi-genre sound” and “classical boom.” “We’re both from Caribbean backgrounds,” Marcus explained. “So we grew up at home listening to soca, calypso and reggae. And we studied classical. Then after class we would be listening to hip-hop, whether that’s Biggie (Smalls) or Jay Z … and all of that created the kind of gumbo we play.” By class, he meant as far back as junior high, when the two musicians met at an arts magnet school in Fort Lauderdale. It came time to choose an instrument. “I wanted to play anything else, but that’s all they had left,” Marcus said. Wil B.’s take on the viola was similar. They both chose to make peace with the situation, which eventually led to the birth of Black Violin. Marcus recalled a moment that would define them musically during his junior year at Dillard High School of Performing Arts. It was after school. He was working at his first job, at a furniture store, and was bored. “It was 1998. I had a cell phone, a Sony Ericcson. And this song by Busta Rhymes, Gimme Some More, had this really eerie violin line and it would loop over and over,” he said. So he programmed it in his phone as a
ringtone. Then he made the fortunate mistake of taking his phone to school, where it rang during class. The other students recognized the ringtone and loved it. “So after class I showed them the notes and they started playing them, and we put in the cello lines. And the whole orchestra learned it. And we had this big competition in Lakeland, and we walked in, and there’s all the other orchestras, and we walked in playing Busta Rhymes, and it was super cool.” He earned a full scholarship to Florida International University and by this time, was not only trying to influence his own image but that of the violin. He continued to collaborate with Wil B. – Wilner Baptiste – who was studying at Florida State University and working just as hard on the viola. Soon, the way they were combining their classical training with a hip modern sound was heard – not just by a growing number of fans but also by other musicians. Winning the 2005 Showtime at the Apollo Legend award ensured that, but even more, proved to the duo that they were onto something. Since then, Black Violin has opened for or played with Aerosmith, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Tom Petty, Lupe Fiasco and Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. Marcus and Baptiste have made appearances on Angelina Ballerina on PBS and at President Obama’s inaugural ball. They’re on tour now. “At one part of the show I’ll look around and see people who are white, black, purple and green, 5-year-olds to 70-yearolds,” said Marcus. “I’ll look and there will be an older white woman with her eyes closed, listening, and a 12-year-old kid next to her nodding to the hip-hop , during the same song.” But with lyrics – or really, spoken word – such as found in Stereotype, the message is as important as the music. “Stereotype: An often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about ... Gary and Christine LaCroix. “We wake up to WGCU every morning and count on it to keep us up on the news and information all through the day,” Gary said. Gary is a Lutheran pastor in Cape Coral and Christine is a retired education administrator, and they consider themselves life-long learners. They enjoy the informative and engaging topics on radio shows like The Diane Rehm Show and Wait,Wait … Don’t Tell Me. Both enjoy history and historical fiction; their favorite PBS shows are Poldark, Indian Summers and Downton Abbey. Tuning in to WGCU provides a way for them to travel, attend concerts and performances and stay on top of current affairs.
