From the Pastor Years ago in California, a family had to be evacuated from a severely flooded area just at Christmas time. A woman welcomed them into her home. Since she had six children of her own and a comparatively small house, a friend asked her why she felt it was up to her to assume this responsibility. This woman explained that at the end of World War II, a family in her home town in Germany was left destitute. On Christmas Eve the mother of this family said to her children, “We are not able to have much for Christmas this year, so I have just one present for all of us. Now I will go get it.” She returned with a little orphan girl and announced, “Here is your present.” The children in this family welcomed the little child with affection. She grew up as a full member of that family – all treated her as their sister. Then the woman who had opened her home to strangers in need added, “I was that Christmas gift.” Even though Christmas was only a few days ago, by now the giving of Christmas gifts has mostly ended. It was a joy to be able to give gifts and a pleasure to have received them. But already in today’s readings we are moving on to the time when Jesus was twelve years old. The Church calendar is rushing everything along too quickly. Perhaps we should pause for a moment to reflect on the Christmas Gift. We call our most important Christmas Gift “God with Us.” God did not choose to save us by simply decreeing from on high that we are saved and forgiven. He entered entirely into the experience of our human condition. He understands our

helplessness when circumstances are out of our control or when a loved one goes in a direction we know is not good for them. He was a helpless baby after all. He understands when we feel overcome by the people around us and all their demands for our attention. He spent most of his public life in similar circumstances. He gives us the inspiration to gently turn the other cheek and put aside our anger, to look for good in those who seem unlovable, to look beyond what is different and see each person as our brother or sister. He even gives us the courage and strength to embrace a cross without complaining because he loves us personally and embraced the Cross and offered himself in our place. This remarkable Christmas Gift changes everything about us if we truly receive him. He gives us the ability to live with a spirit of gratitude for our gifts large and small because they remind us how much our Father loves us. He gives us the ability to forget our self and look for opportunities to serve others. As we contemplate the image of the Baby born in Bethlehem, we realize that now he offers us a remarkable power. The more we work to be sure that our words reflect his gentle love, and our strong arms help to lift up his weaker brothers and sisters, the more we are able to be changed by the Gift we have received. The Baby whose birth we celebrate at Christmas asks us to join him in continuing to bless others. We are the gift, when we choose to speak, and act and think like Jesus. –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk

Entro completamente a experimentar nuestra condición humana.

–Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk
