Parish Services & Information

Pastor’s Column Dear Parish Family: Advent is more than simply a season. It is an “attitude!” The season exists to remind us of the fundamental way-of-being that ought to be characteristic of the disciple of Jesus the Christ. We are challenged to be “alert” and “attentive” to the “signs” of God’s presence every day. In other words, Advent is a season of hope; but hope is not hope if its object is seen. Thus, Advent ought to stir within the human soul our basic and ancient longing for God. Among the most endearing memories from my childhood is that of my siblings and parents and me gathered around the Advent Wreath. Its candles illuminated the darkness of our living room while German Christmas carols played softly in the background. Despite the squirming of little children and the hunger pangs of all awaiting supper, there was usually a brief, but precious, moment of silence. Time stood still and God was with us! Treasure every moment of this brief season; and may you always be ready to be surprised by God! Blessed Advent, Father Bill Foley First Reconciliation First Reconciliation will take place on Saturday, December 9 with two groups: 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Church. A short service followed by confessions is scheduled.

Rorate Mass on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception As is the custom in our parish, the 5:30 p.m. Mass on December 8th will be celebrated in the tradition of the candlelight Advent Masses offered in honor of Our Blessed Lady. The entrance chant of the latin Rorate Mass begins with the words “Rorate caeli desuper, et nubes pluant iustum...” (Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the Just One...). Even after the introduction of elecricity in the late 19th century, the German bishops decreed that minimal artificial light is permitted only for safety. Please join fellow parishioners in this beautiful and moving liturgy. Our Lady’s Shrine in Advent Every year more than a few new parishioners inquire about the dried flower and herb arrangements at the Altar of Our Lady in the church. The thousand-plus year old custom traces its origins to central and northern Europe when parishioners dried herbs and roses during the summer to be able to decorate the images of Our Lady during Advent when fresh flowers were unavailable. Fragrant herbs were always included to represent the sweetness of the Christ Child in Mary’s womb. Please take a moment this Advent to stop by the altar and teach your children about this ancient Catholic tradition. Second Collection for Retired Religious “Thanks to support from the Retirement Fund for Religious, we are now in a much better position to care for our elders,” writes a religious sister. Your donation helps her religious community and hundreds of others provide for aging members and plan for long-term needs. Please give to the Retirement Fund for Religious collection next weekend, December 9-10. Thank you! Poor Box Donations Poor Box donations in December will benefit St. Joseph’s House, a nonprofit serving children and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It offers home-based care before and after school and during school breaks and weather-related closings, thus enabling parents, many of whom are parenting alone, to hold jobs. Its summer camp—with crafts, games, and field trips—is anticipated by the children all year long.

First Sunday of Advent

Christmas 2017 Alternative Gift Giving List

Advent is a time of quiet anticipation and hope for Christ’s rebirth. Often we focus elsewhere getting caught up in frantic preparations for the secular “holiday season” searching endlessly for gifts. We would like it to be different but each year for many of us, our Christmas observance is more a tribute to consumerism than to Jesus Christ. Instead of spending too much time and money buying material items for loved ones, you can give gifts of sharing benefiting others. The Alternative Gift Giving Catalog designates organizations in need identified by the Social Services office at Blessed Sacrament. This catalog provides the opportunity to sponsor services while reducing the commercialism of the Advent and Christmas Seasons. When you place an order from this catalog, you will receive a personalized card specifying the charitable service which you are sponsoring. Simply present the card as your gift. Please indicate if your gift is a donation requiring no card. Complete the order form on the last page. Return the completed form for your gift selections and check made payable to Blessed Sacrament Church. Please deliver it no later than December 20th. The address is: Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada St., NW, Washington, DC 20015-2423, ATTN: Michele Bowe. Completed cards will be mailed or available for pick up at the Parish Center. Questions? Contact Michele Bowe: 301.951.6427 or [email protected].
