The Child

WORSHIP TIMES

Each Advent our church staff and Worship Committee choose a theme which guides our planning and thinking about worship and spiritual practices during the four weeks leading up to Christmas. This year we have chosen “The Child.” Obviously, this child is Jesus. But it also refers to the many metaphors and descriptors which the boy Jesus embodies: Child of Promise; Child of Peace; Child of Hope; Child of Joy; Child of Light; Child of Love. Any of these, and all of these, titular references are the reason the angels of Christmas are so enthusiastic. The promise, the peace, the hope, the joy, the light, and the love are why the shepherds go running and drive their flocks to the manger. Advent is truly all about the child. I remember when Colleen, my wife, was pregnant with each of our children. They were amazing and exciting times, but they were also overwhelming times. At points, it was downright scary. Each ultrasound was an exciting peek into a baby’s fragile life; but it was also anxious until those moments when the obstetrician said, “this looks perfect.” Like all young parents, it was all about the child we were waiting upon to be born. I can also remember thinking it would get easier with the second and third babies, but they brought more of the same. There was so much excitement as our family grew and our hearts expanded to love more children. But they came with new anxieties: Will I be a good father to two children, and then three children? How will more children shape our marriage? Will I be able to afford it (there were a lot of diapers, expensive car seats, and we had to buy a new minivan)? Am I up to the challenges that these beautiful blessings will bring to the remainder of my life? Like all parents of growing families, those days were all about the children. I was brought to my knees in prayer more times than I can recall. As I think of Joseph and Mary 2,000 Christmases ago, I imagine they felt similar anxieties. I imagine their exhaustion as they journeyed to Bethlehem. I imagine their fear as they learned of Herod’s plot to steal the life of the baby Mary had carried and delivered. I imagine their terror as they fled to Egypt to get away from Herod’s death squads (think about that with a political lens: Joseph and Mary and Jesus forced to immigrate to Egypt; read about it in Matthew’s gospel). Why did they flee? To protect the child of course. Advent is truly about the child. So too is Christmas. Thus, the theme of our Advent season is “The Child” and all the uncertainty and promise that the birth of a new baby can bring. One pastoral note before I conclude: there are many families in our church and our community who struggle with infertility and they want a child, but biology has conspired against them for one reason or another. There are still other people who long to adopt a child, but the stars have not yet aligned and their watch for a child continues. For these families, Christmas can be a very tender time. Please keep families such as these in prayer. Speak words of support and kindness to them if you know of their struggles and waiting. Such concern is the church at its best.

BLUE IS THE NEW PURPLE FOR ADVENT

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.” - Isaiah 9:2 As we prepare for the beginning of the liturgical year, the Session, with the assistance of the music staff and the worship committee, has officially adopted the color Royal Blue to represent the season of Advent. The Presbyterian Church USA, of which White Memorial is a part, is a reformed and always-reforming church that now recommends using either purple or blue for Advent. There are multiple reasons to change from purple to blue, which signifies the darkness of the night sky before dawn and the coming of Christ’s light. The season of Advent is filled with darkness and anticipation and leads us to the brightness Christ’s birth brings to the world. Throughout history, the Virgin Mary has been depicted in blue both in painting and iconography. Blue represents hope, expectation and heaven and will especially enable children to recognize the uniqueness of the seasons through color. Purple will continue to be the color of Lent which represents penitence and preparation.

We need your help with items for men and women: holiday-themed items, pot holders, dish towels, gift sets, gloves/scarves, wallets, ties, tools kits, flashlights/batteries, candles, or any item that would make a great gift for a child to choose (new items only). Bring items to Gloria Johnson’s office in the Witherspoon Building, W301, by Monday, December 3.

Habitat Wall Build

upcoming events

On Saturday, November 3, 2018 the interior and exterior walls for a complete Habitat house were built in one hour and ten minutes! WMPC members, along with friends from Santuario Hispanic Fellowship and Healing Transitions came together to make home ownership a reality for a qualifying family. The morning was fun and productive as conversation and hammering blended together. This is one of several ways that our congregation works on Habitat projects. If you would like to get involved contact Harry Montgomery at [email protected].
