Pastor’s Note Dear Ones, Loving parents spend much of their time warning their children about danger and behavior that is unwise. No parent wants to hear after some disaster, “Why didn’t you tell me?” The Lord is giving a loving warning to this new generation of his people before they enter the Promised Land. In this long love story, this is another chapter where God proves his care and compassion for his people. Warmly, Steve

Preparation for Worship & Communion A NEW GENERATION “We will not hide them from their children,     but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,     and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob     and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers     to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them,     the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,    so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God,     but keep his commandments.” – Psalm 78:4-7 “There are two ways of getting home; and one of them is to stay there. The other is to walk round the whole world till we come back to the same place.” – G.K. Chesterton

Pentecost Today we reflect on the day the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples 50 days after Christ’s resurrection (Acts 2). Pentecost occurred during the Feast of Weeks, an established Jewish festival which drew people from many nations to Jerusalem (Leviticus 23:15-21; Deuteronomy 16:16). To this day, Pentecost reminds us that the Lord is making all things new. The Church celebrates by expressing its gratitude for Christ’s promise to send “another Counselor” (John 14:16), praising God for the work of the Spirit in renewing creation, and professing confidence and security in the Spirit’s power to reach the world with the Gospel.

Call to Worship In the last days, God says,     I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy,     your young men will see visions,     your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women,     I will pour out my Spirit in those days,     and they will prophesy… And everyone who calls     on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Acts 2:17-18, 21 (Joel 2:28-29, 32) The First Word Because we believe God initiates with sinners, we begin worship with His Word: His invitation to us to gather in His name. 2nd Grade Worship Lab led the Call to Worship during the 10:30 AM worship service. wepc.org

Invocation Declaration of Faith from The Heidelberg Catechism 47, 49, 51, and 53 (1563)

In His divinity, majesty, grace, and Spirit, Jesus Christ is not absent from us for a moment, and by the Spirit’s power we make the goal of our lives not earthly things but the things above where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand.   Through the Holy Spirit Christ pours out His gifts from heaven upon us His members.   The Spirit, as well as the Father and the Son, is eternal God, And He has been given to us personally; so that, by true faith, the Spirit makes us share in Christ and all His blessings, comforts us, and remains with us forever.

10,000 REASONS (BLESS THE LORD)

Bless the Lord, oh my soul, Oh my soul, worship His holy name. Sing like never before, oh my soul, I worship Your holy name!

1. The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning, It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes: 2. You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger, Your name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing— Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. 3. And on that day when my strength is failing, The end draws near and my time has come. Soon my soul will sing Your praise unending— Ten thousand years and then forever more!

Song of Praise THY MERCY, MY GOD “The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.” – Psalm 145:9

1. Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song, The joy of my heart, and the boast of my tongue; Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last, Hath won my affections, and bound my soul fast.

Text: John Stocker (1776) Music: Sandra McCracken ©2001 Same Old Dress Music (ASCAP). Used by permission. CCLI# 708363

2. Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live here; Sin would reduce me to utter despair; But, through Thy free goodness, my spirits revive, And He that first made me still keeps me alive. 3. Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground, And weep to the praise of the mercy I’ve found. 4. Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own, And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine.

Scripture Reading After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest, 2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.” 3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,4 “Take a census of the people, from twenty years old and upward,” as the Lord commanded Moses. The people of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were: 1

Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; 6 of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. 7 These are the clans of the Reubenites, and those listed were 43,730. 8 And the sons of Pallu: Eliab. 9 The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, chosen from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the Lord 10 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, and they became a warning. 11 But the sons of Korah did not die. 5

8 May 20, 2018

This was the list of the people of Israel, 601,730. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 53 “Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names. 54 To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance in proportion to its list. 55 But the land shall be divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. 56 Their inheritance shall be divided according to lot between the larger and the smaller.” This was the list of the Levites according to their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; of Merari, the clan of the Merarites. 58 These are the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. And Kohath was the father of Amram. 59 The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister. 60 And to Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. 62 And those listed were 23,000, every male from a month old and upward. For they were not listed among the people of Israel, because there was no inheritance given to them among the people of Israel. 57

These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.65 For the Lord had said of them, “They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 63

Preparation for the Lord’s Supper

Words of Institution The disciples prepared the Passover. And when it was evening, Jesus came with the twelve. And they were reclining at the table and as they were eating, He took bread. And after blessing it, He broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Confession of Sin based on Isaiah 30:15,18 Confession & Encouragement Often we find that our hearts are worshipping something other than God. In confessing our sins, the Holy Spirit probes our hearts and minds and graciously shows us what we mistakenly believe will give us life. Jesus is good to lead us from sorrow over our sin to the sweetness of His grace.

Father in heaven, We confess that we have sinned against You in our thoughts, words and deeds. You have spoken to us in Your Son: forgive us for living as if You never act, never hear, never speak. We have lived as if You did not dwell in us by Your Holy Spirit convicting, changing, encouraging and helping us. We have resisted being led by You. We have followed the spirit of our age into self-reliance and selfworship. We have acted as if the Cross has no power. Forgive us for living as if You do not care for us, and grant that we might delight in Your will and walk in Your ways. Amen. Silent Confession

Words of Encouragement Romans 8:1-2

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

Songs of Response to God’s Grace Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.– Psalm 136:1 Sandra McCracken, Leslie Jordan, and Josh Silverberg (with adaptations from Henri Nouwen) © 2016 Drink Your Tea Music Used by permission. CCLI #: 708363

STEADFAST 1. I will build my house Whether storm or drought On the rock that does not move. I will set my hope In your love, O Lord And your faithfulness will prove You are steadfast, steadfast. 2. By the word you spoke All the starry host Are called out by name each night. In your watchful care I will rest secure As you lead us with your light. You are steadfast, steadfast. 3. I will not trust in the strength of kings, On your promise I will stand. I will shout for joy, I will raise my voice, Hallelujah to the Lamb! You are steadfast, steadfast.

IN TENDERNESS “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’” – Luke 15:6

In tenderness He sought me, Weary and sick with sin. And on His shoulders brought me Back to His fold again. While angels in His presence sang Until the courts of heaven rang.

He died for me while I was sinning, Needy and poor and blind; He whispered to assure me: I’ve found thee, thou art Mine. I never heard a sweeter voice, It made my aching heart rejoice.

Oh-o-oh the love that sought me! Oh-o-oh the blood that bought me! Oh the grace that brought me to the fold of God, Grace that brought me to the fold of God!

Upon His grace I’ll ponder, And sing anew His praise, With all adoring wonder, His blessings I retrace. It seems as if eternal days Are far too short to sing His praise.

AMAZING GRACE (MY CHAINS ARE GONE) “To the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.” – Ephesians 1:6

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound— That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.

The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures.

'Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear, And Grace my fears relieved; How precious did that Grace appear The hour I first believed.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God who called me here below, Will be forever mine.

My chains are gone, I’ve been set free, My God, my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood His mercy rains— Unending love, amazing grace.

Doxology

Doxology “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” – Psalm 150:6 Text: Thomas Ken (1709) Tune: OLD HUNDREDTH (Bourgeois, 1551) What does “doxology” mean? It’s a word derived from two Greek words meaning ”glory” and “word.” A doxology, then, is a spoken word or song that ascribes glory to God. Today’s doxology calls all of creation to praise God as the source of all blessing and acknowledges His Trinitarian (three-in-one) nature.

The Last Word God always has the last word in our worship. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing.
