BIG or Small?

The Benefits of Independent Schools of All Sizes By Suzanne Koup-Larsen Size is one important factor parents generally consider as a concrete way to differentiate schools when they choose one for their child. Most independent schools in the Delaware Valley have a fairly small enrollment, says Bobbi Hannmann, EdS, an educational consultant in Moorestown, NJ. Typically, they have fewer than 1,000 students, and for some schools that enrollment figure includes grades K-12. So how much should size play a part when seeking the right school?

Get a feel for the school

There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to independent schools. Choosing a small or large school depends on the child, and each child’s individual needs should be considered as a school is selected,” says Linda L. Phelps, executive director of the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools in Plymouth Meeting, PA. Parents must consider their child’s age, temperament and academic needs. Also, whether it’s large or small, families should visit the school to see how the school feels, says Beverly Stewart, MEd, director of Back to Basics Learning Dynamics in Wilmington, DE.

“Once the child is confident in himself, he can really go anywhere.” -Bobbi Hannmann, EdS

“It’s important to see and feel the culture of the school,” continues Stewart. Independent schools function on different models: Some have K-12 in one location, while others serve only elementary or only secondary school students. Some schools operate like a small school within a big school. For example, a school may be split into a lower, middle and upper school at one location. The three schools may operate almost autonomously, notes Barbara Kraus-Blackney,

6

Guide to Schools

president of the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools, located in Bryn Mawr, PA. Larger schools might try to create a small-school atmosphere by dividing students into teams or via small class sizes, says Hannmann. Both smaller and larger independent schools have lots of benefits, depending on what suits your child and family.

Benefits of small schools

Smaller schools generally offer: • more individualized attention • smaller class sizes • lower student-to-teacher ratios • fewer layers of bureaucracy • flexibility in the curriculum to meet the needs of the students • a community feel “In a small school setting, you have teachers who know the kids,” says Kraus-Blackney. As a result, “children are less likely to slip through the cracks.” However, Stewart notes, “There can sometimes be higher expectations at a smaller school because teachers know the students better.” Small schools can mean smaller social circles, which may be a drawback for some students. They also may not have all the services — such as special education classes or speech therapists — that your child may require or offer all the clubs, activities and sports that your child wants to try.

Big or Small? cont. from p. 6 Benefits of large schools

Larger schools generally have: • more diversity • more activities • more academic offerings • larger social groups • lots of opportunities to try different things Parents should note that more academic offerings does not necessarily mean academic superiority. Ivy League students come from all backgrounds, notes Hannmann, and experts say there is no Ivy League advantage for students from larger schools versus smaller ones. At a larger school, teachers and administrators may not know students as well, and some children may feel anonymous in large crowds of students. There also can be increased competition for spots on sports teams or in activities and courses.

The right fit

Don’t rely on numbers alone. “Check out each school personally to see what feels like the best fit,” advises Kraus-Blackney.

“The most important thing is that the child is comfortable,” says Hannmann. “Once the child is confident in himself, he can really go anywhere.” Suzanne Koup-Larsen is a contributing author to MetroKids.

School Tech Trends

How Local Schools Enhance Education with Modern Tools By Cheyenne Shaffer Most classrooms today use some form of technology during instruction. The current generation of students grew up knowing how to swipe a touchscreen or use the Internet, so it’s natural for schools to tap into that know-how and enthusiasm when it comes to education. Teachers, meanwhile, get access to content, resources and systems that aid instruction and personalized learning. The challenge? The limits to what technology can do change all the time, and schools need to stay up to date on the latest and greatest educational tools.

What’s trending?

To keep up, educators across the Delaware Valley implement initiatives that introduce kids to technology they may not have tried before. At Philly’s Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, the new-media program aims to do just that. For instance, lower-school students create projects with an electronic building-block program called littleBits. “The program helps the youngest students know what’s possible so they can become digital creators,” says Ellen Fishman-Johnson, director of The Arts and head of the New Media department at the academy.

10

Guide to Schools

As a member of Apple’s “distinguished educator” program, Fishman-Johnson also leads an after-school class for middle schoolers to test a new app-design program called Swift Playgrounds. Currently in the beta stage of development, the program works on iPads and, Fishman-Johnson notes, could be used successfully by students as young as fourth grade. Hopewell Valley Regional School District in New Jersey met modern demands with the recent launch of its STEM Academy. With a focus on science, technology, engineering and math, the program began with the fourth graders last year and will extend into middle and high school as the inaugural class moves into upper grades. According to its mission statement, the STEM Academy hopes to “foster critical-thinking skills and hands-on experiences, with inquiry-based learning in a collaborative setting.”

Complement traditional subjects

Educators continue to find innovative ways to infuse technology into standard subjects. Fishman-Johnson says her school just introduced a 10th-grade capstone project in which kids combine their interests, such as animation or filmmaking, with a traditional subject like science or English to create a project that they share on the Internet. “The goal is for students to come up with interesting ways to use the knowledge they’ve gained,” she notes. “We don’t want the creation to just stay in school; we want it to be out in the world.” Tech is also a helpful tool in the library. Students at St. Anne’s Episcopal School in Middletown, DE use laptops to conduct author and genre research and scope out credible sources for projects. “Not only are they able to research more efficiently, they can use these devices to synthesize and present their findings,” says librarian Amy

annually on technology. Jenny Randolph, director of alumni and public relations at St. Anne’s, says the school’s faculty and staff read professional journals and blogs, complete web courses and take part in podcasts to help determine whether specific technologies will fit its curriculum. Another deciding factor, she adds, is input from students, who grew up with technology and are at the forefront of the latest trends.

Shepherd. Kids show their work via infographics, movies, Prezis (3D presentations) and other creative media programs.

Adding new tech

Investment in a new device or program, whether it’s iPads or an educational management system like Schoology, can be costly. Studies show that schools spend a total of about $56 billion

Ultimately, technology in the classroom continues to grow increasingly popular in part because it reaches kids in a way that wasn’t previously possible. “The material they learn becomes relevant and exciting to them,” FishmanJohnson says, “because technology is something they know.” Cheyenne Shaffer is resource editor at MetroKids.

16

Guide to Schools

Center School is an independent school that provides children who learn differently with a personalized education to realize their potential and reshape the way they view themselves and their future. For over 27 years, this quaint, private school for grades 1 through 8 has been a trusted resource for students with languagebased learning differences, such as dyslexia, ADHD, auditory processing and executive function challenges. Center School recognizes the role that language plays in academic success, and much of the day is dedicated to literacy instruction with Orton-Gillingham or Wilson, reading comprehension and writing. A majority of our students also face challenges in math, so our math curriculum emphasizes authentic mathematical situations, project-based learning and STEM principles. Our students take core subjects in science and social studies, and students use technology widely throughout each class to keep at pace with 21st-century skills. We employ methods proven by research and practice to be the most effective for our students’ special requirements. Students are taught in small groups so teachers can continuously monitor their progress and alter instruction to suit a child’s changing learning needs. We adjust the curriculum to teach at an appropriate pace for a student’s individual level of learning. Most important, students learn to understand their learning difference and develop skills to advocate for what they need. Our personalized approach has helped hundreds of students to succeed in high school, college, graduate school and careers.

Established in 1865, Country Day School of the Sacred Heart has educated curious young girls and young women for over 150 years. The 2016-2017 school year welcomed Miss Deirdre Cryor, who arrived in July as the new Head of School. “I am thrilled to be a part of this beautiful mission that has the strength of years of practice and at the same time is so current to today’s needs,” Miss Cryor said. Guided by the global vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, the Network of Sacred Heart Schools is an association of 24 independent Catholic educational institutions in the U.S. and Canada. While each Sacred Heart school has its own ethos and defining characteristics, the five goals unmistakably define every campus. The all-girls atmosphere gives students an opportunity to become more vocal and recognize that they are responsible for becoming women who make a difference in the world. The school seeks to foster open-mindedness and reverence for all differences. Young women are empowered to extend their critical thinking and experience self-awareness and resilience in a global community. Students of all ages are encouraged to take risks, reach beyond their comfort level and expect more of themselves as critical thinkers, lifelong learners and responsive leaders. Each day the students are met with opportunities for spiritual, social and personal growth. An extended day program for lower and middle school students is run by Sacred Heart teachers, and students have the opportunity to do school work or socialize with friends. Guide to Schools

The Grayson School is Pennsylvania’s only independent, non-profit school and weekend enrichment program designed specifically for gifted learners. At Grayson, we are passionate about helping gifted students find a place where they can be challenged and have a chance to grow — opportunities they may not have elsewhere. Not all gifted children are the same, and we know that they need different things from school. High-ability learners need to be able to progress at their own pace and at their own level, and they benefit from interaction with both intellectual and social peers. Our faculty and staff have extensive training in understanding and nurturing the social and emotional development of gifted children and can appropriately support their needs. Our academic program, based on research-based best practices in gifted education, is designed to meet each student at his or her own ability level. Every day includes project-based learning, coding and other STEM activities that allow our students to lead, explore and answer complex questions and challenges. Very small class sizes allow for both ability and peer groupings within a unique and individualized vertical curriculum design. The Enrichment Center at The Grayson School offers Saturday morning and summer camp programs for all gifted learners in the greater Philadelphia region. Our extracurricular programs challenge gifted children to think critically, ask and answer difficult questions, solve problems, stretch their minds and have fun! Courses are not for curricular advancement but to give students a chance to explore topics of interest them that they may not have exposure to at school.

Points of Pride: • The only school of its kind within a 125-mile radius • Student-directed, project-based learning is a key component of the curriculum, and every student codes every day • A maximum student-teacher ratio of 8:1; staff and faculty are highly trained in the unique needs of high-ability learners • No “ceilings” or limits on what our students can learn each year — unlimited potential, endless possiblities Grades: K-8 Coed

Through curricula and experiences that are progressive, timely and relevant to today’s world, we at HFS encourage our students to wonder and explore, to ask challenging questions and seek answers and to discover — to become independent learners and thinkers. We at HFS provide effective tools for students to respond compassionately and thoughtfully to one another and the world in a non-violent manner — to be peaceful, creative problem solvers. Students seek opportunities to serve others and tend the environment in the context of community/global outreach and daily practice — to be good stewards of relationships, resources and the planet. Students come to embody the Quaker testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship at HFS, where they are woven into every aspect of school life. 22

Guide to Schools

Whether exploring the structure and sounds of the violin in our kindergarten music curriculum, learning the “eco-nomics” of recycling in first grade, designing mazes in Middle School art, or building bottle rockets in Upper School engineering, Haverford School students make myriad discoveries each and every day. Classroom lessons are heightened through experiential learning, including second graders’ 10-week study of African culture. The boys create walking sticks depicting a life lesson and perform African drumming and dance under the tutelage of a local troupe. Cheered on by their prekindergarten “buddies,” teachers, and parents, the boys walk three miles carrying gallons of water, simulating the hardship that many African children endure to access fresh water. With more than 130 years of preparing boys for life, The Haverford School has a consistent vision of the best that boys can be. Our extraordinary educators are experts in teaching and mentoring boys, uncovering and fueling each boy’s passions. We understand that: • Boys are physical beings and have a natural desire to move. We use space, movement, and collaboration to enhance boys’ learning. • Boys respond well to clear expectations and positive reinforcement. Our curriculum is structured to give boys room to fail and encouragement to succeed. • Boys thrive under a relational teaching method. We support boys in multiple arenas, developing deep connections and fostering achievement. The outcomes of a Haverford education are evident in the success and contributions of our alumni, who are making their mark around the globe as government officials, international aid workers, technology entrepreneurs, financial analysts, and Olympic hopefuls. Ninety seven percent of the Class of 2016 was admitted to one of their top three college choices, representing some of the finest institutions in the country. As such, connections between students and faculty members embody excellence in Augustinian education above all other elements and result in well-rounded students who easily transcend traditional classifications. These transformational relationships are essential to the effective, character-based education of young men. At the heart of a St. Augustine Prep education are the core values of Unitas (Unity), Caritas (Love) and Veritas (Truth) — lived principles in every aspect of our school life. Through the Catholic tradition and in the spirit of St. Augustine, we aspire to: • Achieve academic excellence with integrity • Create a compassionate Brotherhood of Christian Gentlemen • See the face of God in all people through loving service to our neighbor

OPEN HOUSE DATES: Tues., Oct. 25, 2016, 6-8pm Thurs., Nov. 10, 2016, 9am-2pm Sun., Jan. 22, 2017,1-3pm

Stuart’s mission is to prepare young women for lives of exceptional leadership and service, through a challenging and innovative curriculum, superb teaching and close attention to each girl’s personal development.

When girls come to Stuart, they enter a community that is both challenging and supportive. Given the freedom — wise freedom — to explore and grow strong, they do, discovering mentors and experiences that unleash the strength within. In this all-girl environment, students are encouraged, and expected, to try new things, participate, work together and be leaders. They live up to our high expectations by becoming as responsible as they are independent. With self-confidence and self-awareness, Stuart girls develop resolve, resilience and perspective, while learning to value the perspectives of others. They are free to be their authentic selves while looking beyond themselves. Stuart students see their possibilities as limitless. Here, they are not just transformed but transform themselves into brave and bold, powerful and wonderful young women. Stuart girls are wonder-filled as well as wonderful. They ask questions. They want to know more. From preschool to senior year, their curiosity and zest to learn are fed by outstanding academics and inspiring faculty. Our teachers know girls and know each girl well. Student achievements, like their college admissions, are almost as impressive as the girls themselves — who are sharp and focused, internally competitive and externally collaborative. They are serious about and take ownership of their education. By discovering for themselves and making connections between subjects and to the world, Stuart students broaden and deepen their learning beyond the test and beyond Stuart. Graduates are welleducated, well-spoken, and exceptionally well-prepared for highly selective colleges, fulfilling careers and lives driven by wonder.

Westtown School Empowering Changemakers

OPEN HOUSE DATES:

Sun., Oct. 16, 1pm All School (PreK-12)

Empowering stewards and leaders of a better world, Westtown School provides a challenging curriculum and an exceptional level of attention, enabling students to realize their individual gifts within a diverse community.

At Westtown School, a Quaker, PreK-12 day and boarding school in West Chester, PA, academic rigor is only one part of the Westtown way. This setting empowers and inspires kids to solve problems and live their lives with meaning and contribution. Westtown’s Action-Based Education and emphasis on design thinking aim to activate every child’s passion, curiosity and social awareness. As they learn to respond to challenges, complex questions and problems, students are inspired to work for the betterment of the wider community. Design thinking combines the subjective inquiry of the humanities, the objective truth-seeking of the sciences and the creative and open-ended investigation of art and engineering. This takes very different forms in age-appropriate ways throughout the school, yet the message is always the same; students are at the center of their learning and encouraged to immerse themselves in real-world problem solving in an integrated and intentional way. At Westtown, we expect much of our students as intellectuals, care deeply for them as individuals and provide platforms for them as inventors of their own futures. We believe that young people and their parents deserve academic rigor, warm community and an uncommon level of attention. The only way to truly experience Westtown is to visit our 600-acre campus in person. We invite you to see what distinguishes us from other schools.

Quaker principles and practice guide our school. With excellence as our standard, we challenge students in a vigorous program of academics, arts and athletics. We inspire students to be thinkers, collaborators, innovators and leaders.

36

Guide to Schools

Penn Charter integrates the power of arts and athletics into a vigorous academic experience that cultivates strong, creative and resilient young people who are ready to embrace new opportunities. “These are students who will take on the world,” Head of School Darryl J. Ford told a gathering of parents. “They are capable of wrestling with great ideas, resolving impossible problems, discovering the undiscovered.” “Educating students to live lives that make a difference,” the school’s vision statement, reflects Penn Charter’s roots in Quaker values and education. Established in 1689 by Philadelphia Friends and William Penn, the school was among the first to offer education to people of different religions (1689), financial aid (1701), education for girls (1754) and education for all races (1770). Today, Penn Charter supports this history of access with an $9.5 million financial aid budget. The school’s endowment, one of the largest among independent schools, provides financial stability and supports a 47-acre campus with outstanding facilities; successful college counseling; stellar teachers and a college preparatory program with a national reputation for excellence. IdeaLab — the latest addition to a network of lab and activity spaces that include a woodshop in Lower School, science labs and art studios, outdoor learning spaces and a music lab — exemplifies Penn Charter’s longstanding commitment to innovation. More than a makerspace, IdeaLab offers a maker lab, a media lab and a creative lab — a trio designed to develop the core competencies of creation, communication and collaboration. A classic education, renewed and refined.

Wilmington Montessori School Today’s Learners; Tomorrow’s Leaders

1400 Harvey Road Wilmington, DE 19810 302-475-0555 [email protected] wmsde.org

OPEN HOUSE DATES:

Wed., Oct. 19, 9:30am & 5pm Sat., Nov. 5, 10am-12noon Thurs., Jan. 12, 9:30am & 5pm Sat., Jan. 21, 1-3pm Wed., April 5, 9:30am & 5pm

Wilmington Montessori School is a collaborative learning community rooted in Montessori principles, inspiring the joyful discovery of self and a passion for learning and independent thinking.

Since it was founded 53 years ago, Wilmington Montessori School has been committed to the evidence-based educational methods Dr. Maria Montessori developed during the early 20th century. Today those core principles — engaging children in an environment of discovery, critical thinking and problem solving to create passionate learners — continue to drive WMS as we educate children ages 12 months through 12 years. Our spacious facilities, 25-acre campus and close-knit community provide a safe and inclusive environment for joyful discovery and hands-on learning. Teachers focus on the development of the whole child, including academic, social and personal growth, and parents are truly partners in their child’s education. A WMS education prepares students for success in their next educational ventures and in life. For this reason, though technology did not exist during Dr. Montessori’s time, we integrate it into our curriculum for creative projects, research and communication. Students have access to state-of-the-art technology including iPads, Apple TVs, laptops, Elmo Document Cameras and more. Likewise, the concept of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education emerged during the past decade, but the integration of these areas has always aligned with the Montessori philosophy. STEAM education starts in our Toddler Program. WMS is home to three Maker (STEAM) Studios in which students use age-appropriate materials to discover, build, investigate, create, design and learn. Our new Learning Commons also offers students and their families opportunities to explore these hands-on materials, read and borrow from our collection of library books, enjoy special presentations and guest readers and participate in community events. We hope you will take the time to come see the WMS difference for yourself, and find out how our school will help your child become a capable, compassionate and responsible global citizen.

Lansdowne Friends School

Lansdowne Friends School represents the best in Friends education. Grounded in Quaker values, our curriculum (Pre-K through 6th) engages children as they develop academically, socially and spiritually. It is designed so that each child has a personal stake in the education: Learning science and the outdoors, mathematics, language and discussion, art and physical education. This experience produces scholars comfortable asking questions, conversing with adults, courageously putting forth their ideas and believing that education is practical, relevant, meaningful and fun. At Lansdowne Friends School, every child is known. Each member of our community feels safe, welcomed, listened to and knows that their central tasks in life are to care for one another and to make the world a more just and peaceful place. The feel of the school, the conduct of the classrooms, the way we eat meals together and the way all our families are included, speak to the fact that our school is home. Our goals for children include cultivation of an inner discipline and a strong sense of self, the development of compassion and care for others. The weekly meeting for worship enables our children to experience spiritual communion and to know how to reflect on the day-to-day and on the larger ultimate questions in life. We enthusiastically embrace racial, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic diversity and families from all walks of life.

Easily accessible from Philadelphia and its Greater Metro Area, our students arrive to campus on foot, on bicycle, by car, school bus or using public transportation.

Greene Street Friends School

Since 1855, Greene Street Friends School, located in historic Germantown, has educated children according to the Quaker principles of honesty, respect for the individual, peace, integrity and simplicity. While embracing these core values, the School has dared to be at the forefront of innovative educational practices. That tradition of innovation continues today with an emphasis on hands-on active learning, non-violent methods of conflict resolution, cultural understanding and cultural competency, community service and community connection, environmental education and the thoughtful incorporation of technology into the curriculum, including a 1:1 iPad program for the School's oldest students.

Greene Street Friends School is perhaps the most diverse school in the Delaware Valley, welcoming and serving more than 300 children of all backgrounds in grades PreK through 8. Strong fundamentals in all academic areas and ethical strength through an outstanding social and emotional curriculum prepare our students for a rapidly changing world and enable them to progress with an enthusiasm for learning and for life. It is our hope that through their experiences, Greene Street children will discover and affirm themselves and others as they come to know and value differences in ability, language, skin color, sexual orientation, religion, family structure and family income.

STEAM Week Teaches 21st-Century Skills at Media-Providence Friends School

Students from preschool through 8th grade at MediaProvidence Friends School participated in STEAM Week, an intensive five-day cross-curriculum program emphasizing 21st-century skills. MPFS worked with i2, a curriculum company whose mission is to “engage middle school children in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)”, to offer this unique program. MPFS also added Art and Music components, to create the acronym STEAM. i2 partners with leading companies in the math, engineering, and science industries to provide innovative courses not seen in traditional middle-school education. Together, i2 and their partners “strive to excite and inspire students about STEM.” The partner for this project was MathWorks, a leading creator of programming and engineering software for industry and academia. Students used software called MATLAB, throughout the course.

MATLAB allows matric manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creations of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other programming languages. It is highly advanced software used by professional engineers, aeronautics programs, and universities across the country. The program used by MPFS, a pilot school for the program, is called “Bytes and Beats.” Over the course of 5 days, students explored the science of sound as engineers, programmers, musicians, and artists. They learned about sound waves and frequency, built an Arduino board, programmed arrays, vectors, and variables, recorded sounds and generated loops, and created a melody using addition and concatenation. Exactly where students concluded their STEAM journeys depended on the paths they chose to take. They experienced the joy and frustration that comes with learning something entirely new and the thrill and satisfaction of working through challenges and finding solutions. After the completion of the program, 5th – 8th graders showcased their work to their peers and families at MPFS’ annual Math & Science Day. For more information please visit mpfs.org or call Francy Strathmann, Director of Admissions, at 610-5651960 to schedule a tour.

Guide to Schools

Inspiring Confident, Compassionate Leaders

Since 1856, the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur has educated, empowered, and inspired young women for a lifetime of compassionate leadership and service. Beginning in the sixth grade, every aspect of a Notre Dame education builds the academic skills, personal abilities, and spiritual foundation needed to excel in college and beyond. While challenging courses mark the Academy’s academic rigor, Notre Dame is a caring, spiritual community, guided by the faith tradition of the Catholic Church and the service of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

• Notre Dame was recognized with the 2016 Environmental Community Service Award for an innovative, cross-curricular program called Project Stream. From science and mathematics, to art and religion, students explored water scarcity, safety, and sustainability. • All middle school students receive an Apple MacBook Air at no additional cost. • A progressive study of World Languages begins in grade six with a survey of French, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish and continues through Advanced Placement. • The Academy’s new Center for Global Leadership partners with leading girls’ schools around the world to offer new global learning opportunities and exchanges. • Dance, fine and performing arts, music, athletics, campus ministry, and activity clubs give every student the opportunity to explore her unique gifts. How will Notre Dame inspire your daughter? Visit campus for a personal tour, or attend our Open House on Sunday, November 6 from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. For more information, contact Diane Sander, [email protected] or visit ndapa.org/openhouse. At Notre Dame, the learning environment empowers you to follow your dreams. Confidence is instilled in you. Your voice is heard and it matters.” — Notre Dame graduate

OUR STUDENTS SAY… “Before The Quaker School, I felt left out and jealous of other students in my class. Now, I can fit in for the first time in my life.”

We are a K-9 school for students with complex learning challenges. We work with students to create a learning plan that allows them to express who they truly are. Many of our students come to us frustrated with some aspect of their current school: maybe they aren't able to keep up in the traditional classroom setting or perhaps making friends has been a challenge. Here at TQS, our students thrive as they discover the confidence to live and learn in a supportive environment.

Caring community where students learn to love school Integrated social development program Research-based teaching interventions Integrated occupational and speech therapy Multi-sensory, experiential learning
