DIPLOMA OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT Diploma of Hotel Management graduates will be suitably equipped to work in commercial enterprises under supervision, in positions that require skills gained in their Diploma. This program is taught on ECU’s state-of-the-art Joondalup campus. The program consists of 8 units of study and can be completed over 2 or 3 trimesters. Students who complete the PIBT Diploma of Hotel Management will receive up to 120 credit points advanced standing, the equivalent of the first year, in the respective Bachelor degree at ECU. A minimum of 50 percent pass in all units is required for progression to ECU.

UNIT DESCRIPTORS ACC1100D – Accounting (Core) This core unit is designed to help students understand, prepare and use financial reports such as a balance sheet, income statement and a statement of cash flow. It covers a range of financial and managerial accounting issues with an appropriate mix of theory and practice. BES1500D – Business Communication and Analysis (Core) This core unit introduces employability skills essential for university and career success, including communicating effectively, analysing data and using technology and selfawareness. Activities focus on data to support decision making; information searching skills, summarising, synthesising and communicating effectively. Students learn concepts of meta-cognition, self critique, career management and lifelong learning; examine individual learning styles; cross-cultural and business communication in a learning

environment; integrating theory with practical activities and skill portfolios.

This core unit equips students with the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively within Australian academic and professional environments. Students acquire essential skills – selecting, summarising, evaluating information, applying knowledge to a range of oral and written tasks, within simulated workplace scenarios. Language literacy is embedded through scaffolded tasks, enhanced feedback, and within assessment criteria; uses case studies to acculturate students to Australia workplaces and university environments.

This core unit explores how Information Systems are made up of hardware, software, data procedures and people and how Management Information Systems (MIS) develops/uses info systems to help businesses achieve goals and objectives. Competitive advantage can arise from how hardware and software components are used together with data procedures and people in an organisation.

HOS2220D – Rooms Division Management (Core) This core unit explores management of the accommodation sector of hospitality businesses. It also discusses the principles and procedures in the provision of quality tourist accommodation with emphasis

MAN1100D – Management (Core) This core provides an introduction to fundamental management concepts and principles. It also covers the evolution of management theory and examines a range of different approaches to the study of management. A detailed analysis of management function is conducted, exploring current management practices.

Please note that not all units are delivered every term. Methods of assessment at PIBT Methods of assessment may differ depending on the program and subjects you choose. Most subjects will be assessed through a combination of written examinations and assignments, essays, presentations, seminars and tutorial participation. Some coursework will include group-based projects and practical activities. At the beginning of each unit, students are given an outline that includes due dates for the completion of assignments. Students who fail to meet these submission deadlines may be penalised even though the work was completed. Attending all classes is essential in order to be successful at PIBT. PIBT reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient demand. Timetable clashes may be unavoidable. The order of units selected in the first and second trimester are recommendations except where a pre-requisite applies. Flyers are current as of 9 September 2016.
