DISCIPLESHIP March 24, 2019 Introduction: As guests look around our worship center, they will discover two banners which flank our stage area. On those banners resides Lakehoma’s mission statement: Love God, Serve Others, Make Disciples. In January of 2019, the elders announced that we would be looking for a Discipleship/Worship Minister to help us better serve our mission of making disciples. Since that initial announcement, I have heard this position called, Outreach, Involvement, Associate and Community Minister. Today we seek to clarify and inform you as to the role of this prospective minister. Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:11-16 I. Mandate: Make Disciples Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). 24

“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master… (Matthew 10:24–25). II. What is a Discipleship Minister? The Discipleship Minister’s primary responsibility is to equip, serve and grow the body of Christ at LCC. All ministers are strongly encouraged to meet, pray, encourage and provide pastoral care and spiritual mentorship/discipleship to members of the LCC body. 11

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:11–13). Job responsibility – threefold… A. Equip/Train/Disciple B. Serve/Minister C. Mature/Grow II. Why is This Important? so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes (Ephesians 4:14).

III. Why Do We Need a Discipleship Minister? 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love (Ephesians 4:15–16).
