Discovering Hope in the Psalms Psalm 71: Continual Hope In Psalm 71, there are interwoven two themes: *Declaration of trust *Description of trouble 2 key aspects of God’s character seen in this chapter: *His righteousness- Who He IS. *His faithfulness to keep His Word- What He DOES. *In prayer...Cry out for deliverance! (v. 1-4) Ask Him for specific help. (v. 1-2) Our cries for deliverance are grounded in confidence of WHO God is! Acknowledge who He is. (v. 3-4) Confidence in God outweighs the concern with trouble. *In prayer...Call to mind God’s past acts. (v. 5-8) Psalm 139:14-16, 1 Samuel 7:12 “As we look back, we should be filled with thankfulness. And as we look forward that thankfulness should turn into mighty hope.” (John Piper) *In prayer...Confess your fears and hurts to Him. (v. 9-13) What was the Psalmist fearful about? 1. Physical Weakness (v. 9a) 2. Being forsaken by God (v. 9b) 3. False accusations by others (v. 10) 4. Misrepresenting God (v. 11)
5. Being away from God’s presence (v. 12) 6. Justice f or wrongdoing (v. 13) *In prayer...Continuously resolve to live out God’s purposes for your life. (v. 14-21) What are God’s purposes for us? *Hope continuously. (v. 14) *Be preoccupied with His praise. (v. 14) *Give testimony to God’s faithfulness. (v. 15) *Intentionally sow seeds of faith in future generations. (v. 17-18) *In prayer...Cry out in worship! (v. 22-24) “Worship in church is not just for singers. The question is not ‘do you have a voice?’ But rather ‘do you have a SONG?’ The psalmist said: ‘The Lord has lifted me up from the pit and placed a new song in my heart…” (Dr. Hayes Wicker)
