DISCUSSION GUIDE

Week 7 • May 26/27, 2012 • (Bob Merritt)

INTRODUCTION

The choices you make today determine your future. Some choices are minor and have minimal effects, but some are game changers. This weekend’s message was titled “Stake in the Ground,” because when we decide to make major changes in life for God we need to put a stake in the ground and declare where we stand. By putting a stake in the ground we can build up courage and confidence to face the opposition that usually follows after we make bold changes for God. Below are some questions that will help guide you as you discuss this weekend’s message.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What are some minor changes you’ve made in life? Did they affect you very much? Did you face opposition? What are some major changes you’ve made? What type of opposition did you face? What was the hardest thing you experienced when making those changes? 2. Have you ever tried to take the reins and control something in your life that seemed impossible? Explain. If you succeeded, what got you through it? If you didn’t, what was too hard for you to handle? What area in your life do you need to grab the reins and take control of? 3. Read Joshua 24:1. Often times when we try to make a change for God we keep it private. In this passage, Joshua exemplifies what a godly leader should do and assembles the people he’s leading. Who in your life are you leading and need to assemble together before God? Why? 4. Read Joshua 24:15. This is where Joshua pounds the stake in the ground. He makes a declaration in front of everyone. He decides on behalf of the nation that he will serve God and no longer put up with idolatry and sin. What declaration do you need to make in your life? 5. Do you often think, “Tomorrow I will make the change I know I should make today?” What’s holding you back? Bob said that the time is now. The choices you make today ARE your life. Joshua challenged his people to make the choice today—not tomorrow. What changes do you need to make today? 6. Bob said that a declaration of obedience is often the trigger that releases God’s blessing. Do you believe that God will show up after you make a declaration of obedience? If not, what’s holding you back from believing? Can you think of a time when you obeyed and saw God’s blessing in your life?

THINK ABOUT IT We all want freedom and blessing. We all want to experience God’s love and power in our life. The Bible says God blesses those who obey him. If we make a choice today and make a declaration of obedience, put a stake in the ground, and be a leader to both ourselves and our families—we will experience His love and blessing. The big question is, Why would we ever let the false freedom of sin hold us back from experiencing the true freedom that’s found in obedience?
