WEEK 4 DISCUSSION GUIDE

Is It Possible / To know god? jason strand

Oct. 18/19, 2014

INTRODUCTION Almost everyone can tell you something about Jesus. He was born in Bethlehem, he died on a cross, and Christians today believe he’s God. But knowing things about Jesus isn’t the same as knowing Jesus. It’s easy to confuse the two, but the difference is important. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, you can begin a relationship with Jesus today.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Jason shared about three groups of people: 1) I believe

in God, but I don’t know him; 2) I believe in God and I know him, but I don’t know him well; 3) I believe in God, I know him intimately, and serve him wholeheartedly. Where do you find yourself today?

2. Read Matthew 7:21-23. What’s the difference between

being saved by works and saved by faith? Which mindset does Jesus say truly saves?

3. Read Romans 6:23. Most of us are uncomfortable with

the word sin or being called a sinner, but like Jason said, “We’ll never fully appreciate the good news until we understand the bad.” How have you brushed sin under the rug? How can you give praise to His forgiveness in your life?

4. The problem is sin, and the solution is Jesus. Do you know

Him? Whether that’s saying a prayer, learning more about Jesus in the Bible, or serving others for his purpose, what step can you take to know him even more?

JOIN THE CONVERSATION God knows the sin we struggle with, yet he gives us his presence, comfort, and the gift of eternal life. What is one good thing that God has specifically given you?

COMMIT TO MEMORY You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

KEY SCRIPTURE JOHN 8:19

If you knew me, then you would know my father too.

PHILIPPIANS 3:8

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, so that I may gain Christ.

MATTHEW 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

PSALM 63:3

Your love is better than life.

JEREMIAH 29:13

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

ROMANS 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

HEBREWS 2:14

For only as a human being could he die and only by dying could he break the power of the devil who had the power of death.

HEBREWS 4:15

Jesus faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin.

ISAIAH 64:6

We are all infected and impure with sin. When we try to display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

PHILIPPIANS 1:29

What a privilege it is to trust in Christ.

JEREMIAH 1:5

Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
