FAMILY TENSION HANDLING STRESS

Nov. 30 Dec. 1 Bob Merritt

LONELINESS

Introduction Family tension. We’ve all experienced it, and it can be especially present during the holidays. So what can we do about it? God created us to be in relationship with him and with others. This weekend’s message gives some solutions for handling family tension in situations you can’t control and in those you can.

Discussion Questions What are some of your favorite family memories from when you were younger? What made those times great? Was there a common person (or people) involved? Read Matthew 22:36-40 and Romans 3:23. How do these verses seem to work together and also contradict each other? How can the verse in Romans make it easier to follow Jesus’ commands? Are you currently facing a family situation that is out of your control? Identify if you need to let it go, confront it, or end a relationship. Explain. Have you experienced a situation like this before? Read Romans 12:16-18. Is there something you are choosing to hang onto, relishing in feeling mad and miserable about it? What’s stopping you from managing your own behavior and moving on? Who can hold you accountable to let it go or even laugh it off, if possible? What family values do you remember from when you were growing up? Were they consistent? What are some of your values right now? Do any need refining or strengthening? What’s stopping you from doing that? What is your best form of communication? How have people best communicated with you? How can you make productive communication a more important part of your relationships?

Think About It

Pastor Bob asked, “Is the value of love non-negotiable in your home, not because anyone deserves it, but just for showing up?” What are ways you can show your family, and those closest to you that you love them no matter what?

Commit to memory

Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39
