BOB MERRITT

INTRODUCTION

Loving mercy and responding to it with action comes naturally for some of us, yet for others it’s an area of struggle. As you discuss the questions below, be honest with one another about how you currently live out your faith in Christ and where you might be able to respond with more action and compassion.

1

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Bob explained justice as correcting a wrong, and mercy as responding with compassion toward someone as a result of feeling mercy for them. Which of these comes more naturally for you? How do you see it play out in your day-to-day life?

2

Bob talked about how all of us—if we are honest with ourselves—struggle to accept and love certain people or types of people, and in turn we cross them off our list. Who or what type of person doesn’t make the cut for you? What can you do to change how you view and love those people?

3

Bob laid out three reasons why people don’t respond to the mercy they feel—time, money and personal safety. Which of these three do you catch yourself using as a reason to ignore and simply pass by? It’s important to be wise about our safety as we help others. How do you manage the tension of being called to respond to mercy in light of potentially dangerous situations?

4

Read 2 Peter 3:9. In this verse, we see that every human being has value in God’s eyes. How are you doing in seeing the value in every person? What are some ways that you could continue to grow in valuing others as God does?

5

Read Luke 12:48. How much have you been given? Bob shared about his son, Dave, and his wrestling with whether or not he is stewarding all that he’s been blessed with. When you think about the resources you’ve been given, which of them could you do a better job stewarding so they can be used for God’s glory?

6

Bob explained that we can grow in mercy by doing small things for others. What are some ways that you show mercy in small ways? When you do those things for others, how does it impact them and what is the result?

THINK ABOUT IT

Pastor Bob said, “I wonder who you and I have crossed off the list.” How can you work to change your heart toward these people? Commit to praying for each other this week as God works in your heart.

COMMIT TO MEMORY

God has shown you what is good. And what does He require of you? To act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
