MAPPING IT ALL OUT
When was the last time you unfolded the trusty Rand McNally map and used it to determine how to get from Point A to Point B while in your vehicle? Most of us now rely on the GPS maps installed on our phones or in our vehicles. They are quicker, easier and, best of all, we don’t have to figure out how to fold them back together. Meanwhile, aside from driving, maps can still be handy. Like when you are at an event or conference and need something that shows everywhere you need to be. Or when you are shopping in an area with multiple locations and want to plan your route. And especially when you are on a ski slope and need to make sure you don’t end up on a black diamond when you were expecting a green. Not too many years ago, my friend Greg suggested that we print “one of those spiral-bound book of maps.” In the midst of his 7-minute explanation of what it could be, I finally interrupted him and said, “You mean an atlas?” His response was like one of those Gilda Radner

“nevermind” looks. Meanwhile, Steve Peglow, an incredible local artist we work with, found a niche with his unique form of community and development maps. And I learned firsthand how residents at Lake Panorama appreciate their wall maps to get a better grasp of the local geography. Just a few years ago, we were contacted by a chamber of commerce to create a printed community shopping map. We published it, and within weeks they were all gone. They wanted more — and quickly. This printed map was so popular that we decided to do some in other areas, too. Maybe my friend Greg was onto something, or maybe he was just on something. Either way, I am going to hang on to the trusty Rand McNally in my glove box — just in case. Enjoy mapping out your week, and, as always, thanks for reading. Shane Goodman President and Publisher

JOHNSTON ENCOURAGES REDUCED IRRIGATION AS PART OF THE WATER SHORTAGE PLAN The City of Johnston has implemented Stage 1 of the metro area’s Water Shortage Plan because of droughtinduced low river levels and record-breaking customer demand for water. The flow rate in the Raccoon River is down to less than 300 cubic feet per second compared to the median flow of 4,000 cubic feet per second. These two factors created a 90% demand on Des Moines Water Works’ production capacity, which triggered Stage 1. On Friday, June 11, Des Moines Water Works delivered almost 90 million gallons of water to its 500,000 customers. City of Johnston residents receive water from Des Moines Water Works. “The City of Johnston urges all customers to follow the irrigation schedule, which includes no lawn irrigation on Mondays and a watering schedule of every other day based upon their address,” said Public Works Director Matt Greiner. “Together, we can all do our part to
help conserve water and reduce demand on our water system during these current conditions.” Much of the increase in water demand in the summer is a result of lawn irrigation. Therefore, residents and businesses are asked to reduce their lawn watering usage by 25 percent during this stage and avoid watering between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Customers should visit the Des Moines Water Works’ website: www.dmww.com and follow DMWW on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (dsmh2o) for the most up-todate information.

JOHNSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT WELCOMES OFFICER HOLTRY
The Johnston Police Department welcomed a new member to their department on Monday, June 7 as Mayor Paula Dierenfeld officially swore in Officer Holtry. “We are very pleased to officially welcome Officer Holtry to our department as a sworn member,” said Police Chief Dennis McDaniel. “Holtry is already a familiar face within the community as she previously served as a community service officer. Since joining the department, Holtry has demonstrated a strong commitment to professionalism and public service and is eager

to serve. Her prior outstanding performance led to an opportunity for consideration as a sworn police
officer. We are excited to see her step up to these new challenges and opportunities within our Field Operations Division.” The Johnston Police Department hired Officer Holtry as a civilian community service officer (CSO) in the summer of 2019. In February 2021, she was appointed as a probationary police officer. In March 2021, she began attending Hawkeye Community College’s Level II police academy, and, on Friday, May 21, she graduated with her Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification. Officer Holtry has already begun field training.

JOHNSTON POLICE RECOGNIZE A GRADUATE MEMBER
The Johnston Police Department recognized a recent graduate from the 490th School of Police Staff and Command program at Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety. Lieutenant Jensen recently completed this academically intensive, 10-week training course. “I am proud to have Lt. Jensen as part of the leadership team here at the Johnston Police Department,” said Police Chief Dennis McDaniel. “This type of command-level training is crucial for building strong police leaders in the 21st century. Lt. Jensen will continue to strive for excellence as the police department’s Administrative Services Division commander. She has proven to be a leader not only here at the department, but also during her training, serving as the class vice president. Our department and community will benefit from Lt. Jensen’s attendance at this program.” During the program’s curriculum, each student is academically challenged through written examinations, projects, presentations and quizzes, in addition to a staff study paper. The major topics of study include leadership, human resources, employee relations, organizational behavior, applied statistics, planning and policy development, budgeting and resource allocation.
