ALICE NIZZI PARK NOODLE-CUTTING EVENT CELEBRATES A LEGACY

On Thursday, June 10, City of Waukee officials, the Waukee Park Board, family members of the late Alice Nizzi, mining historians and others gathered for the Alice Nizzi Park noodle-cutting event. Alice Nizzi was a Waukee community fixture who was well known for owning and operating the revered Alice’s SpaghettiLand restaurant for decades, beginning in 1947. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Alice grew up in the Shuler mine camp. Her legacy as a friendly restauranteur and as a Waukee pioneer lives on, not only through her family members and through the memories of long-time Waukee citizens, but now through Alice Nizzi Park. At the noodle-cutting event, Alice’s niece Marie (Nizzi) Kayser gave the crowd a touching look at Alice’s life and the impact she had on the community. She was joined by nephew

Jim Nizzi who ran the SpaghettiLand restaurant for years as well. Darlene (Andreini) Oliver and Gilbert Andreini spoke at the event as well, about what it was like to grow up in the Shuler Mine Camp back in the peak days of Waukee’s mining industry. “Family, faith and hard work defined Alice. She was a strong woman ahead of her time in many ways,” said Kayser. “She was a role model for women, especially to the ones in our family.”

Read more about Alice Nizzi and Waukee’s mining history at www. waukee.org/290/Waukee-History. Alice Nizzi Park is a 3.17-acre neighborhood park located at 715 Dellwood Drive. The design of the park is a nod to Nizzi’s legacy and the rich history of Waukee’s coal mining camps. The park features a spaghetti and meatballs-themed playground, rubberized surfacing, sidewalks, a shade structure and historical elements. It was constructed in 2020.

FLYING THE STARS AND STRIPES When I was an elementary school child, Sister Joy taught our music class to sing many patriotic songs. “America The Beautiful.” “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” “The Star Spangled Banner.” The list goes on. We not only learned the words, but we were taught the meanings. Most importantly, we were taught to respect those meanings, those words and the American flag. Admittedly, that was a different time. It was 1976, and most every American was celebrating our country’s bi-centennial by paying tribute to the historical events that led up to the creation of the United States of America. Even so, what we learned about our nation — and the need to respect it — stuck with me. I get goosebumps each time I hear the words “our flag was still there” in our national anthem. I don’t know why. I just do. Our country is not perfect. Our ancestors made mistakes. We will, too. But there is nowhere else I would rather live. I fly the American flag in front of

my home. Not because I belong to a certain political party (I don’t) or served in the military (I didn’t) or want to push a personal agenda (I won’t). It is because I am thankful for my rights. I appreciate that I have freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, and the right to peaceably assemble, and to be able to petition our government. I cherish that I can openly practice my religion, and that others can, too. I value that I have the right to keep and bear arms, even though I choose not to. I revere the right to be secure against unreasonable searches and seizures. I hope that I don’t ever have to justify these rights or the many others I am afforded as a United States citizen, but I rest peacefully knowing that I can. As a continual reminder of these rights, and many others, I will continue to fly the stars and stripes, and I look forward to my next round of goosebumps. PERIOD POVERTY DONATIONS MADE

“Period poverty” is a topic that isn’t discussed much but is quite a concern. For women living in poverty, a lack of feminine hygiene supplies causes many to miss school or work every month, so providing necessary supplies to those in need is essential. One hundred small handy bags of feminine hygiene products were donated to Waukee Area Christian Services. The handy bags were purchased by women wanting to support women. The hygiene products inside were donated by Medicap Pharmacy - Waukee, Super Target - Urbandale and Reveal Community Church - Waukee women’s group. The handy bags are made by women rescued from human

trafficking. Through partners of Better Way Designs, these women are given dignified work that pays a living wage, giving them the freedom and ability to provide for their families. This donation to Waukee Area Christian Services helps women in Waukee as well as those in India hand-making the bags. To contribute to Period Poverty or host a Period Poverty fundraiser, contact Katie Ritzman at [email protected].
