OUTDOOR COOKING SAFETY TIPS
May is National Barbecue Month, but a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard - so be safe! Grills can be very hot, causing burn injuries. Whether smoking, braising or grilling outdoors, the Waukee Fire Department wants you to keep several important outdoor cooking safety tips in mind: • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. • Never leave your grill unattended. • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. CITY REPORTS: LIBRARY DIRECTOR
The Library Director’s Report for May was recently presented to the City Council. Statistics • April 2021 circulation increased by 130 checkouts compared to March 2021 and by 512 compared to April 2020. • Library Patrons saved $31,664 in April by borrowing materials from the library versus purchasing them (does not include digital ebook/audiobook downloads or hotspot loans). • 1,005 individuals visited the library in April. * the puzzle exchange. • 12 puzzles were borrowed from • 20 passport applications were processed. • 0 Notary appointments. • 6 Adventure Passes were used, saving patrons $254. What’s New • The library opened to the public without appointments on April 5. • The library raised $930 on National Library Giving Day. $1,130 was pledged; $930 collected. • A joint fundraising letter for the library and parks and recreation department was mailed to local businesses last month. To date, the library has received $1,900 in donations. Sponsors will receive a window

clings for their business indicating their support of the library. • The City received CARES money as part of pandemic relief. The money was distributed to the city departments in the amount of $23,500, which must be spent by the end of the fiscal year. The library is looking at storage options, staff desks, new staff computers, Ancestry.com, etc. • The library will be sponsoring a Kids’ Craft Table at the Concerts on the Course this summer. Polk City Women are going to help staff the tables. • The Friends of the Library planned several events this summer, including a round-up fundraiser at Fareway May 24-29, free activity at the Police Night Out event on June 25, Papa’s Pizzeria/Fender’s Fundraiser on July 10, and a Pop Toss Fundraiser at the Four Seasons MiniFest on July 17. • Rich Taylor is stepping down from doing library IT support effective July 1. He will be available for consultation and to help with some things, but will not be doing routine maintenance. • The new VOIP phone system will be installed sometime in July which will result in all of the city departments being on the same system.

Iowa Central Community College named Elicia Watson of Polk City to the Spring 2021 semester President’s List and Jeffery Lamp and Colin Swygman of Polk City to the Dean’s List.
FUNERAL NOTICES DORIS RUTH DRUMMOND
Doris Ruth Drummond, 96, of Polk City died June 12, 2021. She graduated from Polk City High School in 1942 and was the last surviving member of her 18 classmates. Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, June 24, with visitation at 11 a.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 N.W. 60th Ave. in Des Moines. A live stream of the service will be available below her obituary on Hamilton’s website. A graveside service will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Union Cemetery in Polk City.

MAPPING IT ALL OUT
When was the last time you unfolded the trusty Rand McNally map and used it to determine how to get from Point A to Point B while in your vehicle? Most of us now rely on the GPS maps installed on our phones or in our vehicles. They are quicker, easier and, best of all, we don’t have to figure out how to fold them back together. Meanwhile, aside from driving, maps can still be handy. Like when you are at an event or conference and need something that shows everywhere you need to be. Or when you are shopping in an area with multiple locations and want to plan your route. And especially when you are on a ski slope and need to make sure you don’t end up on a black diamond when you were expecting a green. Not too many years ago, my friend Greg suggested that we print “one of those spiral-bound book of maps.” In the midst of his 7-minute explanation of what it could be, I finally interrupted him and said, “You mean an atlas?” His response was like one of those Gilda Radner
“nevermind” looks. Meanwhile, Steve Peglow, an incredible local artist we work with, found a niche with his unique form of community and development maps. And I learned firsthand how residents at Lake Panorama appreciate their wall maps to get a better grasp of the local geography. Just a few years ago, we were contacted by a chamber of commerce to create a printed community shopping map. We published it, and within weeks they were all gone. They wanted more — and quickly. This printed map was so popular that we decided to do some in other areas, too. Maybe my friend Greg was onto something, or maybe he was just on something. Either way, I am going to hang on to the trusty Rand McNally in my glove box — just in case. Enjoy mapping out your week, and, as always, thanks for reading. Shane Goodman President and Publisher

THE SOCIAL DILEMMA: COMMUNITY DISCUSSION
The public is invited to the Polk City Community Center either Sunday, July 25, 2-4 p.m. or Wednesday, July 28, 6:30-8 p.m. for a community discussion centered around the Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma.” Sunday’s discussion will include two panelists. Dr. Michael Bugeja is a journalism professor at Iowa State University and author of “Media Ethics: Across Platforms” and “Interpersonal Divide in the Age of the Machine.” Adriane Tiedens is a licensed mental health counselor and local resident. Attendees are encouraged to view “The Social Dilemma” before attending the program. For those who are interested in the program, but do not have access to Netflix, a limited number of Netflix gift cards will be available from the Polk City Community Library beginning July 1. Attendees will also have the option of continuing the conversation this fall with a book discussion on “Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy.” Complimentary copies of the book will be available at both sessions. This program is funded through the Libraries Transform Communities grant from the American Library Association and the Association of Rural and Small Libraries.
