FLOYD E. BENSON Floyd E. Benson, 88, died at home on March 13, 2021, surrounded by family. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 1335 N.E. Beaverbrooke Blvd, Grimes. Burial will take place the following day at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska. FUNDRAISING FOR NEW LIBRARY UNDERWAY
The Friends of the Grimes Public Library is embarking on a large-scale fundraising campaign to help support the building of a new public library at the intersection of N. James Street and N.E. Beaverbrooke Boulevard. The City of Grimes and Grimes City Council have challenged the organization to raise 10% of the total cost of the new library — an ambitious goal but one The Friends believe is achievable with the community’s help. GVSS OFFERS LOANS OF DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
Those with a need for durable medical equipment can call GVSS to see if the organization has that equipment available for loan. If in stock, it is available to borrow free of charge for as long as it is needed. For information, call 515-986-5355. GVSS has crutches, walkers, canes, shower chairs and benches, quad canes, manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, bath scales, elevated toilet seats, bed rails,
toilet safety rails, and power lift recliners. GVSS will clean, repair (if necessary), inventory, maintain and provide at no charge, loan of equipment to clients who have a need. Donations of equipment are appreciated. If you have equipment you’d like to donate, call 515-9865355 to schedule a time to deliver it to the GVSS office or to have it picked it up.
HICKLIN POWER SPORTS HOSTS RIDES
Hicklin Power Sports in Grimes is hosting rides. July 24, meet at 4 p.m. at Hicklin in Grimes and ride to Colorado Grill in Boone. July 31, leave Hicklin at 10 a.m. and ride to Jester Park for a pot luck.
This family event will be at Shelter 5. Cost is $5 per person to cover costs. Meat is provided but bring your own beverages, table settings and dish to share with the meal at noon.

DAILY MEALS FOR SENIORS
The Grimes Senior Center is open to the public. Two seatings are offered for lunch: 11-11:45 a.m. and 1212:45 p.m. Clients will receive a symptom screening when they enter the meal site. Clients will need to make a reservation for the slot they want. If you are not able or wanting to dine inside, or if all serving times are at capacity, there will be an option for to-go meals. This will be available after the last serving time every day and will be picked up inside. A reservation is required to have a meal available and the same screening and mask requirements apply. GVSS clients will need to make the reservation and call to schedule transportation.

THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW
It may feel like 1985 again, but it’s not. The Coca-Cola company is changing its formula for Coke Zero, and this feels all too reminiscent of the New Coke debacle in 1985 when a new flavor of Coke was introduced to the masses. Some called that recipe change incredible. Others called it incredibly stupid. But through it all, brand loyalty was redefined in a way few could have imagined. Was it all part of Coca-Cola’s master plan, or was it just dumb luck? The Coca-Cola team was silent. The best answer may come from the owl in the Tootsie Roll commercials: “The world may never know.” I may have been one of the few who actually liked the New Coke flavor, at least from what I remember. It lasted until 1992 when it was renamed to Coke II and then met its ultimate demise in 2002. Coca-Cola launched Coke Zero in 2005 and left it mostly unchanged until 2017 when it tweaked the recipe and rebranded it as “Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.” The new version, complete with a new packaging design in red instead of black,
will be rolled out in the United States this month. The company says the new product will taste even more like the iconic CocaCola. But I don’t want Coke Zero to taste more like Coke. I want it to taste like Coke Zero. I enjoy a can of Coke Zero on ice in the afternoons. It is my soda of choice. Will I adjust to the new flavor? Will others? Or will this be another lesson in brand loyalty? Change is difficult, especially as we grow older. I embraced New Coke in 1985, but I was only 17 years old and drank very little soda at the time. I have been drinking Coke Zero for 16 years. That puts some perspective into all this. As typical, new products are not geared to those of us who are 50 and older. The youngsters are the target market. We will be dead soon, especially those of us who have been drinking diet colas for decades. Hmmm. Have a great week, and thanks for reading. METRONET FAQS
Q: What is MetroNet? A: MetroNet is a privately owned and operated telecommunications company focusing on bringing fiber optic services to all areas of Grimes. They are the same type of company as Mediacom and CenturyLink. None of these types of companies are affiliated with the City of Grimes. Rather, they are a registered utility governed by the Iowa Utilities Board and only apply for permits to traverse through the city-owned rights-of-way. Q: Does MetroNet have permission to be on my property? A: MetroNet has the legal right to access the designated utility easements typically located within a strip of land running along the street, the sidewalk, the rear lot line, or between two lots. If the easement is within a fenced in yard, crews will need your help accessing the area. Q: I have a sprinkler system, fence, sump pump line or other underground items. What do I need to do to make sure these items are marked and avoided during
construction? A: It is very important to notify MetroNet of these items. You can either mark them with pink flags or landscape-safe spray paint, or report them to metronetinc.com/ construction by clicking the “Ask Questions” tab. Q: When can I remove the utility marking flags and/or paint in my yard? A: Markers and paint need to remain in place until construction of the network is complete. Q: Will MetroNet restore the area in which they performed construction? A: MetroNet has indicated to the City of Grimes that their crews will make every effort to minimize impact to the properties. Once construction is complete and weather permits, MetroNet will restore lawns in areas where digging occurred. The GVSS Yard Patrol coordinator is looking for six to eight volunteers to help with the current mowing season. Clients provide gas and lawnmowers. You provide your time. DALLAS CENTER SEEKING COMMISSION AND BOARD MEMBERS
Dallas Center is seeking to fill two vacancies on the Plan and Zoning Commission. Due to State of Iowa gender balance laws, the City needs to fill at least one of these vacancies with a female. The Plan and Zoning Commission meets as needed on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p,m. The members are appointed by the City Council to a five-year term. The major responsibilities of the Commission are to establish the City zoning regulations and other related matters and recommend amendments to the zoning code as well as review plats. One vacancy needs to be filled on the Board of Adjustment. This vacancy may be filled by a male or female. The Board of Adjustment meets as necessary, typically on a Monday, at 7 p.m. The members of the Board of Adjustment are appointed by the Council to a five-year term. The major responsibilities of the Board are to hear and decide appeals on decisions of the zoning administrator, grant variances to the zoning code and issue special use permits. JOIN COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS WITH THE GRIMES PUBLIC LIBRARY
Join Community Conversations by reading the designated books and joining Grimes Public Library and ISU Professor of Leadership Dr. Chad Cardani-Trollinger. These free community conversations focus on emotional wellbeing and personal development. Digital, audio, and print copies are available through Grimes Public Library. Registration is required. Aug. 10 the topic is “The Art of Possibility.” Sept. 14, the topic is “Emotional Intelligence 2.0.” Oct. 12, the topic is “Daring Greatly.” About the series: Grimes Public Library is proud to offer Community Conversations, a personal leadership development journey. This four-part series journeys participants through topics, strategies and ideas to help them build the life they have always dreamt of. In August, the session dives into the 12 breakthrough practices for bringing creativity into all human endeavors with “The Art of Possibility” with Benjamin and Rosamund Zander. The September session takes a look at Emotional Intelligence and how to leverage it to influence ourselves and others. Finally, the group will examine vulnerability and look at how (and why) it is necessary to lean into the unknown with Brene Brown’s “Daring Greatly.” Participants may attend any or all of the conversations and will be able to leverage their new insights and skills for themselves, their families, their organizations and their communities. The instructor is Iowa native Dr. Chad Cardani-Trollinger, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and Speech at Buena Vista University, a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Iowa State University and his Ph.D. in Education at Drake University in 2020. Dr. Cardani-Trollinger currently serves as assistant teaching professor of Leadership Studies at Iowa State University.
