The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the foundation/source for hope in the believer’s life. This hope gives persevering strength and joy. “20But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 “Let me tell you something my friend, hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane. It has no place on the inside (prison). Better get use’ to that idea.” Shawshank Redemption, Red, spoken to Andy “...remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere so that we need not say anything. 9For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” 1 Thessalonians 1:3-10

Let us not mock God with metaphor, Analogy, sidestepping, transcendence, Making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the faded Credulity of earlier ages: Let us walk through the door.” John Updike, “Seven Stanzas at Easter” (1960), Stanzas 1 & 4 QUESTIONS: 1. Why is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the ONLY true and substantial and unyielding source of hope? 2. Why does trusting in the good gifts of the Creator ultimately lead to disappointment of ever despair (jobs, friendships, children, etc.)? 3. How does the power of the gospel in changing lives lead to hope? 4. How does the solid hope of eternity and the joy of sins forgiven by the cross build a life of obedience and purposeful living?

APRIL 4, 2021

The endurance of the believers at Thessalonica was inspired by the hope of the reality of Christ: 1. A hope because of the power of the gospel observed (1 Thess 1:4-5) 2. A hope that builds a life of obedience and purposeful living (1 Thess 1:6-8) 3. A hope which constructs an eternal perspective (1 Thess 1:9-10)
