Leaving a Stamp on the World Making Jesus Known by Living like Him January 10, 2021

THIS WEEK’S SCRIPTURE Context: After underlining the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) for the purpose of helping you live by the values of his kingdom, Jesus now uses two metaphors that will help you picture the ways through which you can bring good news to a desperate world. A sold-out life for Christ can leave a life-changing stamp on the world.

Key Scripture Matthew 5:13-16 13

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

DISCUSSION & APPLICATION 1. The reference to being salt goes to impure salt that was mined from the Dead Sea. It wasn’t pure so it didn’t last. When it spoiled, it was thrown into the street and trampled under the feet of those passing by. It was also a flavorenhancer and would lose its bite when it got old. Are you still being a salty influence in your world? Why or why not? Do you feel like you’re still making an impact in the lives of others? Make a list of two or three people that you’d like to influence for Christ, and begin to pray for opportunities.

2. In a 1st Century household, lamps were so small you could hold them in the palm of your hand. That made the light that shone from them a precious commodity. So, many would put it on a stand to make the most of the light that its flame produced. Are you allowing yourself to be used by God? In what ways are you shining your light for others to see? What are the areas in which you’d like to see improvement?

3. The goal of the Christian life is to glorify God. Why do you think God contends for his own glory? What are good deeds that you can do that will show his glory to a lost world?
