New Testament Reading Elder Gordy Lutes The Story, Chap. 25, pages 357-358 “The Light of the World” Prayer of Confession (in unison, followed by silent prayer) Father, we thank you for planting your holy name within our hearts. Knowledge and faith and life immortal Jesus your Son to us imparts. You Lord, have made all for your pleasure, you give us food for all our days, Giving in Christ the bread eternal; Yours is the power and yours the praise. Watch over your church, O Lord, in mercy, Save it from evil, guard it still, Perfect it in your love, unite it, Cleansed and conformed unto your will. As grain, once scattered on the hillsides, Was in this broken bread made one, So from all lands, may your church be gathered into your kingdom by your Son. --from The Glenstal Book of Prayer, 118-119, in the Didache,

Pointing Ahead—March 22, 2015 Fifth Sunday in Lent Friends, welcome to worship. The plot thickens. The Story tells in this Gospel section of more and more of the resistance and obstacles put in front of Jesus as we draw near to the Holy Week showdown. Yet Scripture will speak of how Jesus ‘set His face’ to head up to Jerusalem. Here was a confrontation, a power encounter, a contest of wills, a showdown you might say, that showed them up and showed Him off. Both sadly and boldly, it showed Jesus off on the Cross of Calvary, didn’t it? Yet, and here is the good news, it was precisely there that Jesus was ‘manifest’ to the world as God’s only begotten Son, given as gift, raised as savior of all the world. Our Catholic sisters and brothers do well to remind us Protestants that we must not neglect or cover up or mask over that Crucifix. We tend to forget the costliness of God’s Grace, don’t we? We fail to realize that God’s Grace is free, but it is not cheap. How I treasure one of the Lord’s faithful martyrs, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who wrote about the great difference between Cheap Grace and Costly Grace. And Jesus today underlines the tension underneath and behind His suffering on the Cross for us, as we would ‘deny ourselves, take up our own cross daily, and follow Him. And often, for many of us, we stay away because we also don’t realize that our sin is not so much breaking God’s laws, as breaking God’s heart. So whether out of active resistance or passive indifference, we find ourselves too easily and too often most like the scribes and Pharisees, who want our ‘religion’ more than we want Him. Yet, our ‘religion’ is that setting, that nest, that home whereby we find our faith planted, nurtured, exercised and expressed. We guard and keep and treasure it, but we know that ‘without Him, we are nothing.’ (John 15 on the Vine and the branches.) Make these next days a place for YOU to gather at the foot of Christ’s Cross. Indeed, many only discover then that the ground is very level...at the foot of the Cross. Yours and His, Pastor John
