VISION, VALUES AND DIVERSITY STATEMENT After 100 years of service, MAM is recognized as the leading American art museum and community art school in Northern New Jersey. As an organization, we value: artistic inspiration, diversity of voices, individual and group creativity, and the importance of all arts to a civil, inclusive and forward-thinking society.

MISSION STATEMENT The Montclair Art Museum, together with its Vance Wall Art Education Center, engages our diverse community through distinctive exhibitions, educational programs, and collections of American and Native American art. Our mission is to inspire and engage people of all ages in their experience with art, including the rich inter-cultural and global connections throughout American history, and the continuing relevance of art to contemporary life.

Photography by Jackyn Corrado for Montclair Art Museum.

We respect and welcome individual differences and strive to maintain an environment that fosters productivity, creativity, and individual satisfaction by celebrating the diversity of race, gender, nationality, age, religion, sexual orientation, and physical abilities. During our second century, we will invigorate our collections and curatorial presentations; expand our educational services and audience; support artists, their work and connections; pursue productive institutional partnerships; and embrace new media and technology. We will also secure MAM’s financial stability and preserve its facilities and other assets in a prudent and sustainable way.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND MUSEUM DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Fiscal year 2016 at the Montclair Art Museum was one of great celebration! Our focus for FY2016 was to enhance MAM’s educational profile and strengthen the museum’s financial position for years to come. After years of strategic planning, we introduced MAM’s 21st Century Roadmap, a comprehensive plan to raise funds and enhance our offerings while opening eyes, opening minds, and inspiring creativity in Northern New Jersey.

Frank Walter III President of the Board of Trustees

Lora Urbanelli Museum Director

The fall season opened with a celebration of two new initiatives: the creation of the Vance Wall Art Education Center and the public launch of our Second Century Campaign. On September 30, 2015, the community gathered to celebrate a transformational $5 million gift from Carol and Terry Wall to establish the Vance Wall Art Education Center, with the goal of expanding educational programming for all audiences. This gift was revealed as the keystone for the museum’s Second Century fundraising campaign, which has raised $12.5 million of its $15 million target as of the Center’s opening last spring. Also in the spring, MAM hosted the first Annual Gaelen Family Artist Lecture with guest speaker Preston Singletary, an acclaimed Native American glassblower. At a time when interest in MAM’s Native American collection has been rekindled, it was a delight to present this accomplished artist to our members. The Gaelen Family Lecture Series will bring a new artist to MAM each year to speak about and discuss with the public topics such as creativity, process and inspiration, which will help enhance MAM’s stellar reputation as a resource for engaged participation in the arts. MAM’s ongoing rich programming for individuals, families and groups was centered around exquisitely curated exhibitions in 2016, including Eric Carle: Animals and Friends and American Visions: 1870–1940, Works from the Bank of America Collection. Both shows were very popular with visitors and generously reinforced by public and private support, which is crucial to our work and key to the exhibitions’ success. This year’s initiatives have set the foundation for our future direction and growth, allowing the Museum to fully embrace its dual mission to serve as a source of inspiration and a resource for education within our community and beyond. In FY2017, we look forward to more ground-breaking exhibitions, increasing support of our region’s artists, and several new educational programs. More than ever, we are grateful for the support of our trustees, staff, volunteers, artists, foundations, corporations and private donors who help us bring art to life—and ensure that Montclair Means Art for another century. AWARDS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS Alexandra Schwartz’s feature article in the Come As You Are catalogue, Chaotic Input: Art in the United States, 1989–2001, was awarded First Place in the Association of Art Museum Curators & AAMC Foundation Awards for Excellence

The new Vance Wall Art Education Center engages with over 95 schools in 54 school districts, 4 institutions of higher learning, and 140 community and business organizations. 1. MAM revealed plans for the Vance Wall Art Education Center and introduced its newly appointed Director Leah Fox on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at the Celebration of MAM’s Future: A Landmark Event. With a gift totaling $5 million from Carol and Terry Wall/The Vance Wall Foundation, the Museum announced the creation of the Center to establish the footing for enhanced educational outreach and accessible programs for people of all ages. The Vance Wall Art Education Center debuted in spring 2016 in a renovation project that established a physical presence for the Center and all its activities. The renovation created new office 8

space that brings education staff together for the first time. The Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio, a new glass-walled education classroom located front and center at one of the Museum’s entryways and made possible through a planned gift from Helen & Bill Geyer, opens the art-making experience directly to MAM visitors. The launch of the Vance Wall Art Education Center enables an ambitious expansion of MAM’s educational profile, a key strategic priority, allowing the Museum to serve as a lab for education and museum studies departments at area universities, and providing professional development opportunities for educators, thus enhancing our role as a premier provider of art education in New Jersey. The Center engages with over 95 schools in 54 school districts, 4 institutions of higher learning, and 140 community and business organizations. Our vision for the future of education is both programmatic and physical, both on- and off-site, to fully refine and deepen these partnerships, creating national models for art education.

2. MAM built on its reputation for innovation with two original exhibitions, Eric Carle Animals and Friends, which explored the famed illustrator’s creative process and popular work, and American Visions: 1870–1940, Works from the Bank of America Collection, a survey of American Impressionism at the turn of the twentieth century. MAM’s contemporary exhibit Come As You Are: Art of the 1990s, the first major American museum survey to historicize emerging art made between 1989 and 2001, concluded a successful national run with stops in Georgia, Michigan, and Texas. 3. MAM’s Curator of Contemporary Art, Alexandra Schwartz’s feature article in the Come As You Are catalogue, Chaotic Input: Art in the United States, 1989-2001, was awarded First Place in the Association of Art Museum Curators & AAMC Foundation Awards for Excellence, in the category of Article or Essay. 4. MAM’s 3rd year of the Art Truck, a mobile open studio, housed in a retrofitted ice cream truck, that offers free art projects and lessons to MAM’s community served over 91 venues, 6,600 visitors, and 22 towns. It also helped to raise awareness of the importance of

art making and creative endeavors as integral to lifelong wellbeing. Projects ranged from individual watercolor painting for seniors to large-scale community cardboard sculptures at town festivals. 5. MAM’s Creative Aging program is going strong focusing on 4 initiatives for senior citizens in an effort to increase service with customized programs and access to the Museum’s arts activities for this community. 6. In our Yard School of Art, 2,554 students of all ages took one or more of 239 classes and 56 workshops. The Yard School’s Ceramics Studio remains the only resource of its kind at a Museum in NJ, and our Digital Media Lab has proven to be highly successful at attracting new students. 7. MAM’s Free First Thursday Nights, an initiative during which MAM offers late hours from 5-9 p.m. the first Thursday of the month from October-June, with free admission, dynamic programming, live music, tours, and a full service bar, saw 5,360 visitors over eight nights in FY 16, with an average attendance of 670, the highest ever.

The first Annual Gaelen Family Artist Lecture launched in spring 2016 with Preston Singletary. 8. This is a pivotal moment for MAM’s Native American collection as interest in the collection is higher than ever. The third of several phases of re-installations of our Rand Gallery of Native American Art Undaunted Spirit: Native American Art opened in spring 2016. Also that spring,

we launched the first annual Gaelen Family Artist Lecture featuring artist Preston Singletary. Additionally, we are about to embark on a donor-funded threeyear project to complete an inventory and cataloguing of the Native American collection that will result in full records finally being added to the collection database and the Museum’s website, resulting in improved collection visibility, scholarship and understanding. 9. Over 438 guided tours took place this year serving 12,462 students and adults, with over 20% of school tours reaching underserved communities. 10. MAM is proud to be a familyfriendly institution. Park Bench, Free Family Days, Homeschool Days, Family Art Adventure, and SummerART are just a few of MAM’s programs that continue to provide excellent art opportunities to the youngest members of our community.

The Yard School of Art was voted #1 in the 2016 Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards for both Favorite Adult Art Class and Favorite Art Camp—for a second year in a row! 11. The Scholastics Art Awards attracted 4,000 submissions, triple the 1,500 submissions MAM received when we began this national partnership in 2009. In FY 16, more than 219 middle and high school students received NJ Regional Gold Key Awards and 348 received Silver Key Awards. 12. MAM was awarded a Certificate of Excellence by “TripAdvisor” in 2016. MAM was also recognized as the #1 Top Museum Worth Traveling For in New Jersey by “FlipKey,” a “TripAdvisor” Company. 13. The Yard School of Art was voted #1 in the 2016 Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards for both Favorite Adult Art Class and Favorite Art Camp—for a second year in a row!

On Thursday, April 28, 2016, MAM launched the 1st Annual Gaelen Family Artist Lecture. With the generous support of Audrey and Norbert Gaelen, this was the inaugural lecture of a distinguished new program that brings important artists of our time to MAM for an evening presentation and discussion of their work. We were delighted to launch with the artist Preston Singletary who shared a deeper look at his creative process that spans 30 years of exploring the

3 European glass blowing tradition and Northwest Native art. Prior to the public lecture MAM hosted a private dinner with the artist and donors in the galleries to mark the launch of this new program. Art in Bloom, a signature celebration of the Montclair Art Museum, is a biennial festival of floral design that experienced a triumphant return to MAM! The 2016 rendition, titled MAM: The Flowering presented more than 30 floral interpretations of works of art in MAM’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. The floral design exhibition was on view May 11–15, 2016 and was accompanied by special events: a luncheon and lecture Fashion, Flowers & Flirtation on May 12, Co-Chaired by Sandra Carter and Ann Schaffer; gala Flower Ball on May 14, Chaired by Meredith

Bergmann; and after party Midnight in the Garden on May 14, Co-Chaired by Cleo Davis-Urman and Vanessa Yurkevich. MAM: The Flowering special events were Chaired by Deborah Hirsch and Betty Murphy and the floral design exhibition was Chaired by Cynthia Corhan-Aitken. The festival celebrated Gretchen Prater, artist, patron, and mentor; and Bank of America, philanthropic corporate leader in arts and culture and the tremendous success of the
