DCO CORNER This month I’d like to share a portion of an article written by our Synodical President, Pastor Matthew Harrison. It appeared in the March 2017 issue of the Journal of Lutheran Mission. He mentions six areas of focus for our synod. “… I will note six important foci that must be taken seriously and acted upon by our pastors, laity, congregations, districts and the Synod. In fact, many of our clergy, laity and congregations are deeply involved in this kind of work already! 1. Evangelism and outreach. Synod’s new personal witnessing program, Everyone His Witness, is heating up. Our evangelism expert, the Rev. Mark Wood, is coming and going, training people across the Synod! See lcms.org/witness-outreach. 2. Re-invigorating congregations. We’ve produced re:Vitality for congregations to have a good look at themselves and move to a better strategic position for outreach to the community. See lcms.org/ revitalization. 3. Healthy workers. We must all concentrate on making sure our pastors and church workers are forgiven, healthy, supported and engaged in the work of their vocations! 4. Intentional outreach to immigrant populations. The LCMS may be overwhelmingly Anglo, but that is changing. It’s changing slowly, but it is changing. The nations are at our doors. It’s time to help them find a way in. Our schools and universities are gems in this regard! 5. Church planting. S y n o d ’s Mission Field: USA church planting-manual and other resources are now available for districts and congregations to use in reaching out to the diverse communities of our nation. See lcms.org/church-planting. 6. Resolution of internal issues that cause conflict. We’ve come a long, long way. The 2016 con vention was unbelievably calm. Resolutions on controverted issues passed overwhelmingly. We’ve got a long way to go. God grant us repentance, patience and fidelity.” Let’s continue to look for ways to be healthy, unified and reach out to those in our community that do not share the hope we have in Christ! "Don't you have a saying, 'It's still four months until harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." Worship and Music Notes Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss; From victory unto victory His army shall he lead, Till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in His strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer; Where duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there. I've included verses 1 and 3 of this wonderful hymn this month because it's based on Ephesians 6:10-17 (The Armor of God) and is the theme for the upcoming school year at Prince of Peace. Since the month of August brings about the start of our new school year, I thought I would share the theme with you (. . . probably because I just finished making the signs that will go up on my "Be Strong in the Lord" bulletin board and these verses have been going through my mind . . . ). During each month of the school year we will focus on a different "piece" of the armor of God. Every class looks forward to presenting their special "piece" when it's their turn to lead a chapel service. A special song as well as a scripture verse is also chosen each month to help the students remember which "piece" of the armor is being focused on. "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus" is one of the hymns that will be sung to remind us to "put on the Gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer." "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand firm." Ephesians 6:13 Lord, help us to stand firm in our faith, to keep our eyes focused on You and to be a light to others around us whether we are at home, at school, at work or at play. “Sharing the Caring Christ With All People”

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod LCMS Stewardship Ministry When it comes to stewardship, a favorite Bible verse is the account of the widow’s mite (Luke 21:1–4). It’s a moving account. Our Lord praises the seemingly small gift of two copper coins given by a poor widow above the abundance of gifts given by the rich, saying, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them” (Luke 21:3). And that is usually where we stop. But the text goes on. “For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on” (Luke 21:4). “She … put in all she had to live on.” She gave everything. She held nothing back. She trusted that the Lord who made her and all creatures, who gave her everything she had, who redeemed her from her own sin, from death, and the power of the devil, who called her by the Gospel and enlightened her with His gifts of Word and Sacrament, would continue to do this. He would provide her with all that she needed for this body and life because that is the character of the God she had. But this is not why we give small gifts. Her gift, though it appeared small, was actually large. When we are tempted to give small gifts it is precisely because we want them to be small! We don’t trust the Lord to provide for us. We give small gifts because we lack faith in the One who created us, redeemed us, sanctifies and keeps us in the one true faith. We give small gifts because we doubt that God will really give us what we need and desire. We give small gifts because we are not content with what God has already given. We are not slaves, children of the slave woman, under the Old Covenant (Gal. 4). We are adopted sons of the free woman. And since we are sons, we are also heirs. And heirs receive the inheritance. For everything is already ours in Christ. And thus, moved by the willing spirit of adoption, we do the will of God in financial matters far beyond all that done by those under the Old Covenant who were forced by legal demands. So what have you decided to give? How do I decide what to give? Let the Scriptures be your guide. We are to give proportionally to what we have received from God’s giving to us (Luke 12:48; 1 Cor. 16:12, 2 Cor. 8:12). But you have not been set free to give nothing. See that you excel in the grace of giving (2 Cor. 8:7). We are not free to live selfishly outside the Gospel, without regard for God who gives us all good gifts, without generosity for our neighbor who needs us and our gifts, without supporting the community of faith in which we live, without care for our spiritual fathers and those who teach and help raise our children in the faith, without resources for the poor and needy – in short, we are not free to live unto ourselves, hoarding what God has given us only for us. For love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10). And the sum of the law is this: Love God and love your neighbor (Matt. 22:34-.40). We love because He first loved us. We give because He has given to us. Luther once said, “Possessions belong in your hands, not in your heart” (LW 14:240). There is a reason your 10 fingers spread apart. With your hands you catch God’s gifts for what you need and let the rest fall through your fingers to your neighbors – your family, your friends, your community, your church. TRINITY TIDINGS Trinity Lutheran Church Our Mission: “Sharing the Caring Christ with all People” MITE WALK: Thank you for your contributions for the Mite Walk I participated in at the LWML District Convention. Around 40 ladies walked. We walked on a path from the Sanford Center where the convention was held around part of Lake Bemidji to the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues. It was about a mile and a half. Some of us also walked back. The generous donations of the members of Trinity totaled $323.80. The money is used to support the mission projects adopted at the convention. Examples of the 10 projects to be supported are scholarships for full-time church workers and seminary students, foreign missions in Haiti and Kenya, and sharing Christ with Muslims. The total raised by all who walked was $3673.83. The mission grant goal accepted at the convention was $139,000. This will be collected through mites over the next 2 years. Thanks again and God’s blessings to you. Sandy Machula
