Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 10 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s Bible Truth. Before kids arrive, pray for each student by name. Pray that God will use your time together to help kids understand what it means to store up riches in heaven. Ask that God will help the kids focus on things that will be eternal instead of temporary. 9:00 & 11:30 Get Your Head in the Game Made to Move: an activity that increases the oxygen in the brain and taps into the energy in the body

What You Need: Scrap/Recycling paper, 2 buckets What You Do: • Divide your small group in 2 equal teams. • Ask volunteers to help scrunch up recycled paper into balls. • Explain that you’re going to be playing a game of Seated Trashketball. o They are trying to score by shooting the ball (recycled paper balled up) into one of the trashcans on either end. • Tell each team which trashcan is their “hoop.” • Challenge them to take a minute to pick a place on the floor, reminding them that once they start playing, they cannot move—they must stay seated. • Demonstrate how they can pass the paper ball to each other, trying to get it closer and closer to their hoop, until it’s passed to someone close enough to the trash can to be able to shoot and score for their team. • Encourage the other team to try to intercept or knock down the ball so that they can pass it to one of their teammates and try to score on their end instead. • Set a timer for 3 minutes and then give them a chance to re-set—to move their place on the floor after strategizing with their team. • Play as many rounds as you have time for or declare the game over when one team reaches a certain number of points by scoring: for example, 10. Pro Tip: For the last round, you could put more than one ball in play at one time, which will make it crazier and get more people involved.

Wrap Up & Say: “It doesn’t take fancy equipment, cool uniforms, or a big gym to play a fun version of basketball. What other people see as trash and a trashcan, we know can be something else! Today’s Bible Truth helps us to think about storing up treasure in heaven like you were trying to stuff those trashcans with recycled paper balls to win the game. Let’s head to Large Group to hear more. 10:15 Just For Fun Made to Connect: an activity that invites kids to share with others and build on their understanding

What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: • Ask: What would you do if you had a lot of money? If you had a lot of money, what would you do to help other people with some of that money? • Let students discuss the answer to the question. • Encourage them to ask each other why they chose the answers they did. Lead your group to the Large Group area.

Bible: Communicating God’s Truth in Engaging Ways (Large Group, 30 minutes) Engage kids’ hearts through a dynamic and interactive Bible Truth, worship, and prayer experience in a Large Group setting. SFX: Play high-energy music as kids enter. CG: 10-second countdown CG: Use It or Lose It Theme Slide Host enters. Welcome Host has lots of energy as he or she welcomes everyone to The Base. Host is relatable and inviting. Host can talk about something that happened culturally throughout the week like a big sports game, movie opening, a viral video on YouTube, etc. (NOTE: As this is October, fall sports are in full swing. October is World Series month, and football will be on every Saturday and Sunday at this point. You can talk about favorite teams and big games that are happening nationally and locally.) Host tells them how excited he or she is that they’re there and briefly runs through what they can expect. This is especially helpful for first-time guests to make them feel like they know what’s happening. Host transitions to Worship. HOST: “Hey, everybody! I love that we are all here together. Help me welcome the Power Praise team in this morning.” WORSHIP Worship SFX: “This Love” SFX: “This Little Light” SFX: “Glory to God Forever”

Power Praise team exits as Host retakes the stage. Host transitions to the opening game. Opener Opener HOST: “Alright, let me have my small group leader (just one) come to the stage right now.” (Introduce leader) “Now, you have all heard of Simon Says, right? Well, [leader’s name] is going to be our game master today and lead you in a little game of Simon Says. So everybody up. And, Take it away!” Small group leader leads a normal game. After a while, Host interrupts. “You know what . . . I got a great idea!” Calls the other volunteer up on stage. “If Simon Says is great with one game master, how much better would it be with two! Take it away . . . again!” Volunteers begin giving out commands at the same time. They call kids out that they see doing it wrong. Chaos ensues. The Small Group Leaders on stage should continue leading the game like nothing is wrong. After a while, Host interrupts. “Okay, maybe that doesn’t work so well . . . ” If time remains, have the first volunteer sit and the second finish a normal game. “Alright thanks, [Volunteer’s name]. You can go back to your group.” Volunteer stays put and looks at Host. “Ok, fine—Simon Says you can go back to your group.” “Hey, if you have an offering or a tithe this morning, you can bring that on up now.” Host exits as Communicator enters. INTRODUCTION COMMUNICATOR: “Hello, my people! How are you all doing today? See these here (Show kids the car keys.)? Know what these are? (Get response.) Yes, of course—they’re keys. But not just any keys,

they’re car keys! Show of hands—how many of you can’t wait until you can drive a car? Yeah, it is probably one of the most exciting moments in a teenager’s life, and even though it’s a few years away still, I want you to imagine it with me for a moment. You walk out of the DMV where they have just issued you your own driver’s license. You are officially a licensed driver! When you get home that night, your parents hand you a small, wrapped box. You open it up, and inside you find a set of car keys. But they’re not just any keys like these ones to my (Insert name of Communicator’s car). You discover awhole-other level of car keys.” CG: Porsche keys “You notice on the label that there is a logo that says “Porsche.” These are the keys to a Porsche 911— Turbo S Cabriolet—your dream car.” CG: New Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet “You have had posters on your wall of this car since you were little. You never imagined that one day you would have one—but there . . . in that box . . . are the keys to unlock your dreams! You quickly grab the keys and race out the door to the driveway to just lay eyes upon your new, sweet ride. But as you open the front door, you find this waiting for you.” CG: Rusty old Porsche 911 (Playing off of the reaction of the audience) “What?! No, that’s actually a Porsche 911! What’s the problem then? Why would you be that upset?” Allow for responses. “The problem is that you had your heart set on something shiny and new and what you got was old and rusty. It may be the same car, but it’s not the same car.” “Okay, let’s imagine another scenario that might hit closer to home. You’ve begged your parents for a phone of your own, and finally they decide you are old enough. You search online for through all of the different phones and colors and decide on this one:” CG: Picture of new iPhone “Classic black is your style. The guy at the Apple Store hands you the nice new box. You take it home for the box opening—even your best friend comes over! Everybody watches in anticipation as you open the box, only to find this . . . ” CG: Picture of smashed iPhone “NOOOOOO! But wait; it is an iPhone, isn’t it? It is what you wanted. What’s the big deal? What’s the problem?! (Beat) Well, the problem is that you had your heart set on something shiny and new, and what you got was smashed and broken. It may be the same phone, but it’s not the same phone.”

TENSION COMMUNICATOR: “In both cases, you had this nice, shiny new thing in mind, but what you got was a broken-down, useless version of it. The second one hardly even resembled the first!” “And maybe you don’t want a new Porsche 911 Turbo 2 Cabriolet or a new iPhone. But I bet if I gave you a pen and a sheet of paper and told you to write down things you want, you’d have no problem thinking of ideas—things that if you got them and they were not what you expected or they arrived broken beyond repair, you’d be SUPER upset. And this isn’t just you; this is your Small Group Leaders and I, too. We all have things we want. (Optional: Talk briefly about something you want.) “And maybe how we all feel about this causes us to ask a bigger question: is it wrong to have money . . . or to save up to buy new stuff . . . or to even want new stuff?” “When I have questions like this, the first place I should look is God’s Word. The Bible writers give us clues to how God wants us to take care of our stuff. So how about it? Let’s start there.” TRUTH COMMUNICATOR: “Let’s head to a section of the New Testament we call the Gospels. The four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—tell about the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The writers of those books gave us amazing insight into Jesus’ Life and what He did and said while He was here.” “In the Gospel of Matthew, we find a famous teaching Jesus gave on a mountainside, telling all those listening what it means to love and follow God. Check out what Jesus says . . . ” CG: Matthew 6:19-20 NIrV “(Reading directly from Matthew 6:19-20 NIrV) ‘“Do not gather for yourselves riches on earth. Moths and rats can destroy them. Thieves can break in and steal them. Instead, gather for yourselves riches in heaven. There, moths and rats do not destroy them. There, thieves do not break in and steal them.”’ “Jesus starts by talking about two kinds of riches—riches on earth and riches in heaven. Riches on earth are what we’ve been talking about—it’s the money and the stuff we spend our money on. And Jesus says that these things eventually break down. They rust, they rot, and they can be stolen. In other words, they are . . . ” CG: Temporary Slide “Temporary. Here today—gone tomorrow. New today—rusty tomorrow. Shiny today—broken tomorrow. Temporary.” “But Jesus then points us to riches in heaven. These are the ‘things’ that can’t rust or fade or break. In other words, they are . . . ” CG: Eternal Slide “Eternal. They never rust or fade or break. They go on forever. Eternal.”

“But there is a bigger issue at play here, and we see it as Jesus continues His teaching.” “(Reading directly from Matthew 6:21 NIrV) ‘Your heart will be where your riches are.’” “See—Jesus knew something really important that He wanted His followers to understand. When we talk about money and stuff, it is more than just about money and stuff—but these things actually have a way of influencing the way we feel and act and what we believe. And if we’re not careful, these things can actually get in the way of how we can serve God.” APPLICATION COMMUNICATOR: “Let me show you what I mean. Who can help me for a second?” Communicator chooses a volunteer. “Alright, so my friend here is going to go on a shopping trip to some of his most favorite destinations. His first stop takes him to his favorite technology hotspot where he buys all the latest in tech trends, gadgets, and gizmos. (Putting shopping bag in volunteer’s hands.) Here you go!” “Next, you travel over to your four favorite clothing spots for the latest fall fashions (Play up whatever styles are relevant.). And you hit the mother-load! Here . . . ” Communicator puts additional full shopping bags into the volunteer’s hands. It should start to get difficult to hold them all. “But that’s not all, my friend! They’re having quite a sale over at your favorite shoe store, and you need new kicks for school, cleats for soccer, and a couple other pairs, you know, just because!” Communicator puts several more bags in volunteer’s hands, starting to block his or her view. “But what shopping trip is complete without hitting [name of popular store] (pile bag on top), [name of another popular store] (pile another bag on top), or [name of another popular store] (pile last bag on top).” Communicator steps back to look at the volunteer who can’t even see now because they are carrying so many bags. Communicator secretly takes a ball (soccer, etc.). “Hey [volunteer’s name], think fast!” Communicator tosses the ball at the volunteer. Either the ball will bounce off of the volunteer or he or she will drop his or her bags to catch it. “Whoa! What’s the problem? How come you couldn’t catch that ball?” Let the volunteer respond.

“Exactly. Your hands are so full of stuff that you couldn't do anything else! Thanks for your help; you can head back to your seat now.” Communicator helps the volunteer with all the bags. Volunteer returns to his or her seat. LANDING COMMUNICATOR: “Believe it or not, that’s how it can be with our stuff, too. The stuff isn’t wrong, but when it becomes all that we focus on, it makes it very hard for us to be available for anything else. “When we place all of our value in what we can get or what we own, we can end up missing out on what is most important and really matters.” Walks back over to the table with the clock, the piggy bank, and the backpack. “This whole month we’ve been talking about what it means to take care of what we have and to recognize that everything belongs to God. Our time is God’s (Point to clock.). Our money is God’s (Point to piggy bank.), and our stuff is God’s (Point to backpack.). But life is about more than what we can see. And Jesus tells us to store up treasures in heaven . . . to live not for what is temporary but for what is eternal.” CG: Key Question 5 Slide “So as we wrap this month up, I want to leave you with an important question as you head to Small Group—How do you live for what really matters? Take time to think through this and talk about it together. I think you’ll be surprised at all the ways you can do that. Let’s pray.” Communicator leads group in a prayer related to what they just heard than dismisses them to small group.

Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible Truth applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. 9:00 & 11:30 Take a Snapshot [Live for God | Application Activity] Made to Connect: an activity that invites kids to share with others and build on their understanding

What You Need: Recycled paper (different colors/types), pens What You Do: • Pass out recycled paper and a pen to each person. • Encourage them to take a moment and think about what matters most to them in the world. • Ask them to write what matters most to them in big huge letters on their pages. • Tell them to be ready to say “why” they think this is most important. • Show them how to hold their answers turned to their chests, and then when you say, “go,” have all kids reveal their answers at the same time by flipping their papers so that they face out. • Challenge them to move and stand by anyone who has a similar answer. • Give everyone who wants to a chance to make a case for what they think matters most. o Note: If more than one person wrote the same thing, one person could be a spokesperson and represent everyone else. o After everyone shares, see if anyone changes his or her mind and decides that something else is more important than what they wrote the first time. o If so, they can draw lines through their answers and add the new ones above them. • Ask students what all these things have in common? • Follow up by asking if there are answers that we don’t see, what does that mean? What things aren’t important really if we didn’t think to write them down? Wrap Up & Say: “There are a lot of things we think are important. It can be hard to narrow things down and come up with what’s most important if we have to pick just one thing. Today’s Bible passage talks about not storing up and stockpiling stuff on earth because those things won’t last. Instead God encourages us to focus on things that will last forever.”

10:15 Bible Truth Extension [Talk about God | Bible Truth Review] Made to Create: an activity that explores spiritual ideas through the process of drawing, building, and designing

What You Need: Bible, 2 large pieces of butcher paper, painter’s tape, markers, and (optional) Bible concordance with more references on Heaven What You Do: • Tape “Earth” piece of butcher paper low on the wall. • Tape “Heaven” butcher paper above a table or high up so that students have to reach up. • Re-read the Bible passage from today, Matthew 6:19-24. • Encourage everyone to grab a marker. • Ask “So what do people on Earth consider treasures? What kinds of things does God say last forever—treasures in Heaven?” • Explain that they can write words or create pictures to answer those questions on the right sheet. • Challenge them to add details like treasures rotting away or being stolen on earth or details of what they’ve heard will be true in heaven—shining, gold, angels, etc. Note: Talking about heaven is hard because it’s so abstract and there are so many specifics that are unknown. Stay close by the “heaven” sheet and help with brainstorming out loud and encouraging their discussion. If students have questions that you are unable to answer, ask if other students think they know the answers, or leave things open ended after some discussion. Sitting with tension is a great exercise for kids at this age! • Optional: You could also use a Bible concordance to look up other passages that talk about heaven as well. Wrap Up & Say: “We need to live like we know what matters. We have to live like we understand that things on earth are temporary. God wants us to keep in mind what lasts forever and focus on those things.”

What You Need: One large piece of butcher paper, painter’s tape, thick marker What You Do: • Use a marker to write in big letters at the top—“I used to think . . . But now I think . . .” • Start a conversation talking about things they used to think about stewardship—money, time, talents, etc. • Ask what they think now about these topics? • Record their thoughts along with their names on the paper. Before they leave, ask them to close their eyes so you can pray and send them out.
