Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 10 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s Bible Truth. Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Pray that today’s message would “take the pressure” off kids who might feel like they’re too young or immature to make wise choices. Pray that they would internalize the message that all wisdom comes from God and all they have to do is ask Him for it and receive it when the time comes. 9:00 & 11:30 Just For Fun What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: • Ask someone to name a color and then let the person next to him call out something that is that color. (Note that the thing named does not have to be something in the room.) Continue around the group, having each person name something else that is the color the first person named. • Allow no more than three seconds for students to answer. If a person cannot name something in that time, he is out of that round. Play until there is a winner, then start over with another color. Lead your group to the Large Group area.

10:15 Get Your Head in the Game What You Need: Blindfolds What You Do: • Read the activities listed below then ask students to choose to do the one they think is the best or wisest choice. 1. Count the pieces of your hair until it’s time to go to Large Group. 2. Smell your armpit until we go to Large Group. 3. Play a fun game called “Bat and Moth.” Note: These “choices” are meant to be funny, but some groups will have kids who actually pick something other than choice three! Let each student make his or her choice and go with it! It’ll make for a good laugh for the other students in addition to modeling the consequences of an “unwise choice” in a funny way. • • • • • • •

Ask those who chose Number Three to form a wide circle. Blindfold two students then ask them to stand in the middle of the circle. Explain that one person is the BAT and the other is the MOTH. Whenever BAT says “bat,” MOTH must answer and say “moth.” Tell BAT to try to locate MOTH through the sound of his voice. Tell MOTH to avoid BAT by moving away from his voice. Play until the MOTH gets caught then choose other players and repeat. Instruct the kids in the perimeter circle to help keep the blindfolded kids safe by not letting them pass through to the outside of the circle.

Wrap Up and Say: “Great job listening. Keep those listening ears open as we head over to Large Group and hear something from the Bible that could be the most important thing you hear all day.” Lead your group to the Large Group area.

Bible: Communicating God’s Truth in Engaging Ways (Large Group, 30 minutes) Engage kids’ hearts through a dynamic and interactive Bible Truth, worship, and prayer experience in a Large Group setting. CG: 10-second countdown CG: “The Hunt” Theme Slide Host enters. Welcome Host has lots of energy as he or she welcomes everyone to The Base. Host is relatable and inviting. Host can talk about something that happened culturally throughout the week like a big sports game, movie opening, or a viral video on YouTube, etc. NOTE: In many parts of the country August is the first month of the school year. You can talk about summer wrapping up or ask if anyone is excited to head back to school. Host tells them how excited he or she is that they’re there and briefly runs through what they can expect. This is especially helpful for first-time guests to make them feel like they know what’s happening. Host transitions to Worship. HOST: “Hey, everybody! I love that we are all here together. Help me welcome the Power Praise team in this morning.” WORSHIP SFX: “At the Top of My Lungs” SFX: “Living Inside Out” SFX: “Sons & Daughters” Power Praise team exits as Host retakes the stage. Host transitions to the opening game.

Opener HOST: “Hey everyone! Can you believe this is the last week of August?! I’ve had such a great time hunting for wisdom with you, and we certainly are going to end this week with an exciting hunt of sorts! I need two volunteers . . . two volunteers who really like cake!” Host chooses two volunteers for a messy game. “Cake fans, huh? Might not be after this game. OKAY, let’s go! So here in front of you both I have two cakes. Two people. Two cakes. Convenient. When I say go, it is up to you to search through the cake in front of you because there is an important treasure hidden somewhere inside. Sound good? Okay ready, set . . .Hold on!” “Not so fast. You didn’t think I was going to let you use your hands, did you? Gives volunteers a poncho/towel and goggles. “That’s more like it! Alright when I say go, faces in and find that treasure! Ready, set, GO!” “(Have both find what’s inside. One will be a key. The other will be a prize.) I can take those from you . . . Ewww . . .” Host takes the Ziploc® bag from both volunteers. “Let’s see what we’ve got here . . .” Opening the Ziplocs and removing the contents. “This one looks like a (name of prize). Congrats! (Gives the prize to contestant). (Opening other Ziploc, confused) Let’s check out the other one. It’s . . . a key. That’s strange. I don’t think it was supposed to be a key. Wait, it has something on it. ‘P356.’ Locker number? Address? Not sure. Well, I’ll just hang on to this. In the meantime, here is a prize for playing. Host gives second volunteer a real prize Host exits as Communicator enters. INTRODUCTION COMMUNICATOR: “Hey there! Great to be with you again this week. Okay, so you can probably tell by my outfit here that I have a bit of a problem. It started with a sound. A sound like this: (imitating) squeak sq-squeak sq-SQUEAK woo woo WOO!” “You know what I’m saying, right? Okay, maybe not. Well, it was my car. I was driving along and (Imitate the noise again.) and then . . . nothing. The car stopped. I decided it would be best to consult my trusty mechanic . . . you know, Google . . . and then cross-referenced my car specialist . . . YouTube . . . and turns out that it wasn’t that hard of a fix. Well, it wasn’t supposed to be that hard of a fix. I thought, ‘I can do this myself. No problem.’ So I opened the hood and removed a few bolts, unclipped a few hoses, unplugged a few wires. And before I knew it . . .”

CG: Picture of disassembled car “My car looked like this! I’m never getting this thing back together!” (Beat) “Okay, okay, clearly I’m joking. But could you imagine?! (Remove coveralls.) There’s not really any coming back from that one! Or imagine you had a little home remodel . . . patch some drywall, install a few cabinets . . . but the more you got into it, the more problems you found until your house looked like this!” CG: Gutted house “Hard to bounce back from that!” TENSION COMMUNICATOR: “Now those are some pretty dramatic examples, and sure, they’re funny. In both of these cases, it would take a lot of extra time and, in some cases, extra money to fix the damage. But it’s fixable. But what happens if we get ourselves into a situation where the damage could cost us even more? Or the damage was permanent?” “Is it possible to trust our own way so much that we get ourselves in a spot that we can’t get out of? That’s a big question. What’s the solution here?” “Let’s check out this week’s installment of the So & So Show for some clues.” CG: 252 Movie LANDING CG: Key Question Slide “Another great question from the So & So guys,” “Why can't you trust yourself to always make the wise choice? Sometimes we can, but are there times we need some help? Think about that on your way to Small Groups. You’ll have a chance to talk about that and more with your group, before you head out, let’s pray and ask God to help us trust Him no matter what. Let’s pray.”Communicator leads group in a prayer related to what they just heard then dismisses them to small group. SFX: Play high-energy music as the kids exit.

Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible Truth applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. 9:00 & 11:30 Verses to Take with You What You Need: Bibles, paper, markers, cups What You Do: • Hand out Bibles or let students look up Matthew 7:24-27 on their phones. • Ask someone to read verse 24 aloud as you remind the students that in this passage Jesus had been teaching a large group of people. He wrapped things up with a story to help people understand how important it is to be wise. • Let those who like to read aloud take turns reading verses 25-27 then ask: o How do you think Jesus would have finished this sentence if He’d spoken it at the end of this story: “So, the point I’m trying to make is . . .” o If someone knows what God says but they don’t do it, how is that like building a house on a pile of sand? • Form teams of three then give each team a sheet of paper, marker, and 12 cups. • Ask teams to write the word WISE on one side of the paper and the word FOOLISH on the other. • Tell them to place the sheet of paper on the floor with the WISE side up and then give them 30 seconds to stack the cups on top of the paper. o The stacking order should alternate between upside-down and right side up until they run out of time or cups. • Declare a winner then ask teams to remove the cups and turn their papers over to the FOOLISH side. • Challenge two people on each team to hold the sheet of paper a couple of feet above the floor (like a “floating foundation”) while the third player races to stack the cups again in 30 seconds. • Declare a winner. Then bring everyone together and ask: o If Jesus had used this game to illustrate the story of the wise and foolish builders, how do you think He would have finished this sentence: “So the point I’m trying to make with this game is . . .” o How can you tell if your life is built on rock (wisdom) or sand (foolishness)? In other words, how do you know when you’re being wise and when you’re being foolish? o What do you need to do in order for God’s Word to shape the choices you make?

10:15 Discussion Questions What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Ask: • Why is it important to look for wisdom when you’re young? • Since God is the source of all wisdom, what are some ways to involve Him in the decisions you make? • What steps can you take to know what God wants you to do? • What’s one example of what it looks like to trust God with all your heart? • If someone asked you how to be wise, what would you tell that person?

Pray and Dismiss (5 minutes) What You Need: Bible, paper, pens What You Do: • Ask students to share their biggest wisdom take-aways from this month. What’s one thing they learned about God or themselves or a change they’d like to make in order to be wiser? • Close by asking students to think of something they need wisdom for right now. • Encourage them to pray silently or out loud about that thing, asking God to help them discover the wisdom they need through His Word and the wise people He has put into their lives. • Give students the option of writing out a prayer in which every sentence begins with the letter “W” for wisdom. • When everyone is done praying, read 1 Timothy 1:17 aloud as a prayer of praise to our wise and powerful God who will make us wise when we choose to follow Him. • Ask students to echo back each phrase as you read, “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (NIV)
