Reformation Sunday October 29, 2017

8:00 a.m.

AS WE GATHER “It’s still all about Jesus.” It was all about Jesus when the Lord God first promised a Savior to Adam, Eve, and their descendants. It was all about Jesus with every foretelling of the coming Christ by Old Testament prophets. It was all about Jesus at the manger, the cross, and the empty tomb. It was all about Jesus as the apostle Paul penned, “We hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law” (Romans 3:28). It was all about Jesus when Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses on October 31, 1517. It’s still all about Jesus today as we receive the Means of Grace— Word and Sacrament. It will be all about Jesus when He returns in glory on the Last Day. As we observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we celebrate that it always has been, and always will be, all about Jesus! WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: “A Mighty Fortress” LSB 656 INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in 2

Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. INTROIT P: I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, [O Lord,] C: and shall not be put to shame. P: I will bless the Lord at all times; C: His praise shall continually be in my mouth. P: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; C: let the humble hear and be glad. P: Come, O children, listen to me; C: I will teach you the fear of the Lord. P: The Lord redeems the life of His servants; C: none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, [O Lord,] C: and shall not be put to shame. SALUTATION and COLLECT P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray … Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. PSALM 46 Refrain: First time Choir alone, then ALL

Choir: God is our refuge and strength, an ever ready help in the time of trouble. We shall not fear if the earth is shaken, if the mountains fall into the deeps of the sea; Even if the waters rage and foam, and the mountains quake in the surging tide. Refrain:

ALL

Choir: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the dwelling place of the Most High. God is within her; she cannot be shaken. God will help her at the breaking of the dawn. Nations are in tumult and kingdoms are shaken; God speaks and the earth melts away. Refrain:

ALL

Choir: Come, see the works of the Lord, the awesome deeds he has done in the earth. He puts an end to wars in all the world; breaks the bow, shatters the spear and burns the chariots with fire. “Be still and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted in the earth.” Refrain:

ALL

FIRST READING: Revelation 14:6-7

Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth-- to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water." L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 4

HANDBELL ENSEMBLE: “A Mighty Fortress” EPISTLE: Romans 3:19-28 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. GOSPEL PROCESSION

ADULT CHOIR: “By Grace and Word and Faith”……………….John A. Behnke

HOLY GOSPEL: John 8:31-36 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 5

Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 22:34-46: Love! The greatest love story ever shared was God sending His Son to fulfill every requirement of the Law of God on our behalf and the shedding of His blood on the Cross for our redemption. We now have the opportunity to reveal the will of God through love in action as we love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and love our neighbors as ourselves. The cross is a symbol of redeeming love fulfilled for God and for mankind. As we bear witness, share the love of Jesus which is always a perfect love through the Cross. October 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. Yet it is not the anniversary of any great statement Luther made as a reformer or in front of any court. There was no fiery and resounding speech given or dramatic showdown with the pope. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted the “Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences” to the church door in a small city called Wittenberg, Germany. This rather mundane academic document contained 95 theses for debate. Luther was a professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg, and he was permitted to call for public theological debate to discuss ideas and interpretations as he desired. Yet this debate was not merely academic for Luther. According to a letter he wrote to the Archbishop of Mainz explaining the posting of the 95 Theses, Luther also desired to debate the concerns in the Theses for the sake of conscience. Luther’s short preface explains: “Out of love and zeal for truth and the desire to bring it to light, the following theses will be publicly discussed at Wittenberg under the chairmanship of the reverend father Martin Luther, Master of Arts and Sacred Theology and regularly appointed Lecturer on these subjects at that place. He requests that those who cannot be present to debate orally with us will do so by letter.” Repentance and forgiveness dominate the content of the Theses. Since the question for Luther was the effectiveness of indulgences, he drove the discussion to the consideration of repentance and forgiveness in Christ. Any truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt, even without indulgence letters. Any true Christian, whether living or dead, participates in all the blessings of Christ and the church; and this is granted him by God, even without indulgence letters. If Christians are going to spend money on something other than supporting their families, they should take care of the poor instead of buying indulgences. The second half of the 95 Theses concentrates on the preaching of the true Word of the Gospel. Luther states that the teaching of indulgences should be lessened so that there might be more time for the proclamation of the true Gospel. The true treasure of the church is the most holy gospel of the glory and grace of God. But this treasure is naturally most odious, for it makes the first to be last [MATT. 20:16]. Luther’s pastoral desire for all to trust in Christ alone for salvation drove him to post the 95 Theses. This same faith and hope sparked the Reformation that followed.
