DUMC Handbell Campers  CALL TO WORSHIP (inspired by Psalm 63 and Isaiah 55:1-5)

Pastor: Come into the sanctuary and look around. Behold the beauty and splendor of God’s people. All of us – rich and poor, employed and unemployed and desperately hanging on. People: Behold the beauty and splendor of God’s people. Pastor: We believe God’s steadfast love is better than life, so let our lips praise God as long as we live. People: We also often doubt God’s love. We often doubt that God will really provide when it matters. WE

Pastor: But this is what matters today: God said, “Come all who are thirsty, come to the water, and you that have no money, come, buy and eat.” All of us – rich and poor, employed and unemployed and desperately hanging on. People: So with faith – both bold and timid – let us worship God! United Church of Christ’s Worship Ways Archive

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, we confess that we are often swept up in the tide of our generation. We have failed in our calling to be your holy people, a people set apart for your divine purpose. We live more in apathy born of fatalism than in passion born of hope. We are moved more by private ambition than by social justice. We dream more of privilege and benefits than of service and sacrifice. We try to speak in your name without relinquishing our glories, without nourishing our souls, without relying wholly on your grace. Help us to make room in our hearts and lives for you. Forgive us, revive us, and reshape us in your image. Amen. Lydia S. Martinez, Hispanic, USA, 20th cent., alt.

Words of Assurance Pastor: Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. All: Glory to God. Amen.

GOSPEL READING

Luke 14:1, 7-14

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give this person your place,” and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’

He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’ Lector: This is the Gospel of our Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ!

SERMON

 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen. By permission of The United Church of Canada.

Gladly We Praise Thee

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION  The Great Thanksgiving, The Hymnal, pages 15 and 16

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. …And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. …And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. …All honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.  The Lord’s Prayer, No. 895

Prayer of Thanksgiving Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.  CLOSING HYMN, NO. 2175 (The Faith We Sing Hymnal) Together We Serve
