JANESVILLE — Janesville mystery writer Jerry Peterson will write scenes for a new crime novella on Sunday, July 20, at Oak Village Garden Peterson Center in Janesville. The book, tentatively titled “Sleeping With The Fishes,” the third in Peterson’s series of John Wads crime novellas, is set in part at Oak Village. “It’s a locked-room mystery,” Peterson said in a news release. “An employee finds a body floating in the store’s indoor fish pond when she opens for business one morning. There are no signs of a breakin during the night, yet there’s the body, someone very dead.” The story that Peterson will

write will be projected on a screen. Those who come to Oak Village’s One for the Books event can stop him and ask questions about how he writes, the story, the characters, the setting or anything they would like to know. Five other writers also will take part in One for the Books: local writers Merry Fitz Randolph, Sherry Derr-Wille, Cinder Roherty and Pat Hall and lecturer Joan Calder. Calder will talk about gardening, bees and butterflies, and her children’s book, “Airplanes in the Garden.” Her presentation is set for 11 a.m. One for the Books, open to the public, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 20 at Oak Village Garden Center on U.S. Highway 26, between Janesville and Milton.

Chevrolet Avalanche: 2007-’13 HISTORY Spun from General Motors’ full- Variations size pickup and sport utility lines for 2002, the six-passenger four-door Avalanche offered features previously unseen in both categories. The most prominent was called a “Midgate” Interior layout that extended the cargo area by folding the rear seats, removing the back window and lowering the divider separating the box from the cabin. A removable threepiece hard tonneau provided security for the bed and its contents. Second-genera- Sport Wagon tion Avalanches arrived for the 2007 model year with a 5.3-liter V8 or an optional 6.0 that was dropped for 2010. Other than installing a two-speed transfer case (with a low range for offroading) to the 4x4 versions for 2011, the Avalanche stayed unchanged until production ended after the 2013 model year. THE GOOD STUFF Versatility was the Avalanche’s stock in trade. It could operate as a six-person people mover with adequate short-bed hauling capacity, or be transformed into an impressive cargo hauler with more than eight feet of Midgate bed length. Along with a protective tonneau, there were also two lockable storage containers built into the rear quarter panels as well as tie-down cleats molded into the composite bed liner. The available four-wheel-drive system along with optional skid plates, traction control and self-leveling shocks gave the Avalanche its off-road capability. Both V8 engines were strong and reliable.

HEADS UP! The Avalanche was a good multi-tasker, but didn’t quite cut it as a full-blown pickup or deliver all the conveniences of a sport utility vehicle. If your primary requirements ran in either direction, a full-size Chevrolet Silverado pickup or Suburban/Tahoe wagon were likely better choices. That said, however, dropping the Midgate in the dead of winter to haul oversized cargo around was no one’s idea of practical or fun. Note that 2009 or newer Avalanches came with a more efficient six-speed automatic transmission that replaced the earlier four-speed unit. Still, with a weight of more than 5,500 pounds to lug around, the fuel economy numbers weren’t all that impressive.
