News For the Residents of Coles Crossing

Coles Crossing Youth Soccer

Everyone - things are looking great for the 2007 Season. - We have smashed through last years record breaking number, and currently have 289 children registered! - Trophies and T-Shirts are good to go once we get the finally tally. - Picture day is set, You will get all the information on the first day of practice. - Coaches Meeting and Field day are just around the corner. As always, we try and meet every special request as best we can. As for the suggestions to make this a better year, the following are a few, but not all, that we are implementing: 1) “Have some type of marking near each practice and/or game playing field that designates its field number.” - I will be making Posts that will have a field number on them, planted at one corner of the field facing the parking lot. This should help clear up any confusion. The paint on the grass was not sufficient. I will be repainting the lines more often, depending on rain and wear. 2) “If we can get more dirt this year.  A

couple of the fields had extremely low spots that had standing water even in the dry weeks.” - Done! We have doubled the dirt order for 2007. Plus we are moving the fields closer to the Community Center on higher ground. Now we need double the turnout on Field day to help?  3) “Notify Brad Risner (or someone on the board) of the practice schedule so that the fields can be somewhat “reserved”.” Done! I cannot guarantee this might not happen again, but I have spoken live with Brad about this issue. We are discussing signs to attach to the posts at each field.  4) “Smaller fields for the younger kids” The younger kids will have the field size cut in half this year, which for those of you with us last year was how most of the games were played thanks to the rain.  5) “Pray for no rain” I will do my part... Sincerely, Drew Avery Soccer Comish Coles Crossing Youth Soccer

Cypress Christian Students Contribute to Fight Cancer Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period, benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help patients battle blood cancer and assist researchers to continue to strive for a cure. This year, elementary students at Cypress Christian School contributed a total of $1,012.63 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The “Pennies for Patients” program was truly a success this year. The class that raised the most money for kids with cancer was Grade 4A - Mrs. Dice's class. To learn more about "Pennies for Patients," log onto www.leukemia-lymphoma.org. CCS students hope you, too, will join them in the fight against cancer.

Protecting Your Home: 10 Lo-Tech and Hi-Tech Tips

After a fun-filled week in the sun or on the slopes, the last thing families want to do is come home to a ransacked house. According to the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, each year nearly 5 million families become victims of household burglary, often when they’ve been on vacation. Austin-based home security company uControl, a member of the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, shares 10 lo-tech and hi-tech security tips to protect your home while you’re away: Lo-Tech: 1. Discontinue newspaper and mail delivery. 2. Lock all doors, windows and garage doors. 3. Leave drapes and shades open as normal (closed blinds give burglars privacy should they break in). 4. Have your yard mowed and your trees and hedges trimmed – removing hiding places for burglars. Hi-Tech: 5. Install motion-sensor lights in your yard so lights come on when someone walks by. 6. Install an alarm system – but not just any alarm system. Today’s

newer alarm services offer better security and more features and services, usually for the same (or lower) monthly fee. 7. Select a home security provider that offers redundant, back-up connections for your alarm system. Burglars know that all they have to do is cut the telephone line to disable most alarm systems. Newer security systems operate over broadband and cellular connections so your system is always monitored – whether a phone line is cut or your power goes off. 8. Make sure your home security is monitored 24/7 by licensed monitoring centers. 9. Select a security provider that provides remote access so you can check on your home anytime, anywhere. Many newer systems allow you to check on your home’s alarm status from a computer or cell phone. 10. Set up your alarm system so you (and selected family members or neighbors) receive text messages or emails when the alarm goes off.

Back To Basics When Treating A Common Cause Of Infertility Baylor College of Medicine

HOUSTON – (Feb. 8, 2007) – Women suffering from a common cause of infertility now know which fertility drug works best, and according to a study published in today’s print edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, it’s an old standard. The study, which doctors at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and six other medical institutions took part in, followed over 620 women diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) for a four year period. PCOS is an endocrine disorder characterized by irregular menstrual cycles and lack of ovulation. “The study found the fertility drug Clomiphene had the highest pregnancy success rate when compared to the other leading treatment, Metformin,” said Dr. Sandra Carson, professor and medical director of Baylor Assisted Reproductive Technology. Clomiphene was used as the first choice for PCOS until about four years ago. That’s when Metformin, a diabetes drug, was found to aid fertility. “The results of the study showed that Clomiphene had a success rate of 22.5 percent,” Carson said. “Only 7.2 percent of the women who took metformin had a baby.” 067-119 SCR StonegateNews MarApr MECH

A combination of the two drugs showed no significant difference to Clomiphene use alone. “This treatment works by inducing ovulation and gives women a better chance of conceiving,” Carson said. “The results of this study help women make informed decisions and cuts out the use of unnecessary drugs.” Women can control other side effects of PCOS, such as problems with excess body hair, acne, and weight if they begin a healthy exercise and diet program. “Even with diet and exercise, it’s still difficult for women with PCOS to become pregnant without therapy,” Carson said. “That’s why finding the most effective treatment is important.” The lead investigator for this study was Dr. Richard Legro of Pennsylvania State University. Other institutions that contributed to the study were University of Alabama, University of Texas Southwestern, Wayne State University, University of Colorado, and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

THE COLES CONNECTION Wild American Shrimp Pack Nutritional Punch

Certified Wild American Shrimp are a flavorful, healthful food option that supports shrimpers around the U.S. (NAPSA)-Cooking healthy does not mean giving up on great taste. That’s one reason healthful food options, such as certified Wild American(tm) Shrimp, have become so popular. Harvested in their own natural environment from U.S. waters, certified Wild American Shrimp are low in fat and a source of hearthealthy omega-3 fatty acids. “Wild-caught shrimp are fresh, succulent and tender-the way nature intended, unlike 85 percent of shrimp, which is imported and pond-raised,” says Nathalie Dupree, chef and author of “Shrimp & Grits.” A typical 4-ounce portion has just 112 calories when served steamed, boiled, grilled or baked and provides 23 grams of protein-47 percent of the daily value for protein. Studies have

found that shrimp is an excellent source of vitamin D, as well as niacin and iron. “Consumers have a choice when it comes to their seafood. Choosing local ingredients like Wild American Shrimp not only ensures you’re getting the best-tasting seafood available, it also supports an entire industry and way of life,” says Dupree. You can taste the difference with this recipe from Dupree’s latest cookbook: Simple Supper Wild American Shrimp & Grits Makes 2 servings 2 cups cooked grits 4 tablespoons butter and/or olive oil 1 pound Wild American Shrimp, peeled 1 medium tomato, chopped 1 to 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tablespoon julienned fresh basil or parsley Reheat grits in the microwave or over low heat, with additional liquid if necessary. Melt butter and/or olive oil in a saucepan, preferably non-stick. Add shrimp and sautŽ until just before they turn pink. Add tomato and stir until liquid exudes slightly, just a minute or so. Add garlic and cook briefly. Divide grits between 2 plates, pour shrimp and tomato mixture on top, garnish with basil or parsley and serve. Health Briefs - January 2007

Early Hearing Tests Improve Children’s Recovery From Meningitis HOUSTON – Hearing loss and its impact in social interactions can be potentially minimized in children with bacterial meningitis through early identification. A study lead by Dr. Walter Kutz, a former Baylor College of Medicine resident and now a fellow at the House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles, found that children with the streptococcus form of meningitis – marked by high fever, long hospital stays, facial muscular paralysis and seizures – had a higher rate of hearing loss compared to children with other forms of meningitis. But determining which children are most at risk and testing for hearing loss sooner allows for earlier treatment where necessary, lessening long-term social difficulties. “Patients with earlier diagnoses are typically able to return to school sooner and experience fewer problems interacting with others than if their hearing loss had not been detected,” said Dr. Carla Marie Giannoni, assistant professor of otolaryngology at BCM and a coauthor of the study. It is recommended that children suffering from any form of bacterial meningitis have their hearing tested to provide early identification of hearing disability and minimize long-term, adverse outcomes due to hearing loss. Experts Offer Best Bets In Beverages For Kids HOUSTON – When your kids want something to drink, reconsider that juice box. “Many parents are confused about what is and what is not a fruit juice,” explained Marilyn Swanson, registered dietitian at the USDA/ARS Children’s Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. “If the label does not say 100 percent juice, it is not genuine fruit juice.” Fruit-flavored beverages, like many of those handy juice boxes, have sugar content that is comparable to sodas. A better option is to substitute actual pieces of fruit. Healthy beverage choices are important throughout the day to keep kids hydrated and to provide good nutrition. Swanson recommends that children drink mostly water, then low-fat or skim milk, and then

real fruit juice in moderation. Sodas should be limited since they are full of sugar and have no nutritional value. She also offers two main strategies for parents: make healthy options available and be a good role model. Shed Those Post-holiday Pounds HOUSTON – Resolving to shed post-holiday pounds? You don’t have to resort to a crash diet, say weight-loss experts at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Molly Gee, a nutritionist at BCM, suggests that a few simple guidelines can help you lose or manage your weight: * Don’t arrive hungry at restaurants or parties. * At restaurants, split an entrée or order an appetizer as a main course. * Eat less; talk more - leave food on your plate. * Move more - take the stairs instead of escalators or elevators. * Wear a pedometer to keep track of a goal of 10,000 steps per day. * Get a buddy for lifestyle changes in diet and physical activity. * Slow down your eating - use a salad fork or chopsticks. * Choose more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy foods. * Lighten up on gravies, sauces, dressings and butter or margarine where fats hide. * Set realistic goals for weight loss (for example, 0.5 lbs/week).

Test can help diagnose vertigo patients with sound sensitivity HOUSTON – Inner ear specialists at Baylor College of Medicine are finding a surprising upswing in vertigo cases among people sensitive to specific frequencies. “Patients will say, ‘When I hear loud sounds, I either feel like my eyes are fluttering, or my vision changes and I feel dizzy for a few seconds,” said Dr. Helen Cohen, professor of otolaryngology at BCM. “One patient couldn’t listen to his daughter talk because her voice made him light-headed.” A large percentage of these sound sensitivities has been traced to superior canal dehiscence, an irregularity in which a thin bone over the inner ear erodes, disrupting the mechanisms that gauge equilibrium

THE COLES CONNECTION Health Briefs- (Continued from page 18) and sound and causing vertigo. Many vertigo sufferers, especially those whose jobs involve loud machinery, are incapacitated from performing many daily activities. The exact trouble spot inside the ear is not always readily apparent, but fortunately, an accurate if relatively unknown examination called a vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test can help differentiate among several causes of vertigo. Developed in the 1990s but not used clinically until recently, the VEMP test identifies the specific site of injury to the inner ear and/or the balance nerve. During the noninvasive test, small recording electrodes are taped to the neck and shoulders of the patient. Sounds are presented to one ear while the patient’s head is held in a certain orientation. VEMP tests are slowly gaining widespread practice and given the prevalence of gadgets with earpieces and headphones, Cohen foresees more manifestations of sound sensitivity. Herbal ‘remedy’ may be hazardous during pregnancy HOUSTON – A professor at Baylor College of Medicine cautions that the herbal extract ginger may not be a safe option to relieve nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology had previously stated that limited evidence supported the use of ginger as a nonpharmacologic option for treatment of morning sickness. But Dr. Donald Marcus, professor of medicine and immunology

at BCM, is concerned that the evidence for the safety of such a recommendation is poor. He takes issue with the designation of ginger as non-pharmacologic. Ginger extract contains many chemical compounds, including some that are similar to anti-inflammatory medications that may interfere with blood coagulation or kidney function. Further, there are no rigorous studies of the potential dangers of ginger or other dietary supplements during pregnancy. “Although the public and some health care professionals believe that herbal medicines are relatively safe, there are remarkably little data to support that assumption,” Marcus stated.

Group Games for Toddlers by KidsHealth.org

Toddlers learn by playing and they learn a lot between ages 1 and 3. At 1, a child may be working on a wobbly walk and just starting to use words. But by 3, most can balance briefly on one foot and speak in sentences. During these important years, toddlers will enjoy playing simple games with their parents and other caregivers. But they also can start enjoying group games with other young children, though they’ll need adult assistance. Group games offer a chance for kids to be social, though toddlers will more often play alongside their friends instead of interacting with them. They enjoy being with other kids, but will focus more on the leader or parent. Later, kids progress from side-by-side play (parallel play) to a kind of play that allows more give and take between them. Along the way, toddlers will enjoy group games and can begin learning important lessons from them, such as how to take turns. Getting Started

It’s wise to expect a little chaos at first. In other words, when toddlers play a game, you have to define “game” very loosely! They’re full of energy and the desire to explore, so don’t be surprised if they can’t focus for long or follow rulesNot to the letter. With Online that in mind, Article Available try the group games below if you’re having a party or hosting a playgroup. Circle games are a mainstay for toddlers. It’s an easy format - just gather your toddlers in a circle. Make sure all the children can see the adult leader and that everyone has room to move.

Game: Two Little Blackbirds

Number of kids: Any. How the game is played: With singing and hand motions, the adult leads the children in a song about opposites. Two little blackbirds sitting on the hill (Start with your hands behind your back.) One named Jack (Bring one hand to the front with your pointer finger extended.)

One named Jill (Bring your other hand to the front with pointer finger extended.) Fly away, Jack (Put the hand and finger representing Jack behind your back.) Fly away, Jill (Do the same with your “Jill” hand.) Come back, Jack! (Bring “Jack” back to front.) Come back, Jill! (Bring “Jill” back to front.) You can make up additional verses, such as the ones below. Just choose a spot for the birds to sit (“snow” in the first example). Then choose a pair of opposites and make the second of the words rhyme with the spot where the birds are sitting (snow and slow).  • Two little blackbirds sitting in the snow. One named Fast. One named Slow. • Two little blackbirds sitting on a cloud. One named Soft. One named Loud. • Two little blackbirds soaring in the sky. (Continued on page 22)

THE COLES CONNECTION Fertility rises as weight drops

HOUSTON – (Jan. 25, 2007) – Weight loss surgery could have surprising results for some women - as the pounds melt off, the chance of becoming pregnant increases. Dr. Vadim Sherman, assistant professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), said obese women who thought they could not have children regain their fertility during the months following gastric bypass or lap-band procedures. “Weight effects how hormones act in the body.” Sherman said. “Body fat helps to convert certain hormones such as estrogen into other hormones. If there is extra body fat, healthy hormonal changes are thrown off.” Hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and other reproductive problems. As women begin to lose weight, their fertility returns back to normal. For bariatric patients, the weight comes off rapidly, and some are surprised by how

quickly pregnancy can occur. In some cases women become pregnant within six months of surgery. “We recommend waiting a year, when weight stabilizes, before having a child,” Sherman said. “But women who become pregnant sooner can still have healthy children.” On average more than half of excess body weight is lost during the year following surgery. One fear is that the dramatic change in weight will affect the fetus’ health. “Some worry the weight will continue to come off and be harmful to the pregnancy,” Sherman said. “Weight loss usually stops and some women even gain up to 20 pounds.” Sherman said if nutritional needs are met, including all the usual vitamin guidelines for bariatric surgeries, a woman can expect a healthy pregnancy.

THE COLES CONNECTION Toddler Games- (Continued from page 20) One named Low. One named High. Tips for adults: Act out the words you’re singing to emphasize the opposite pairs. If you’re using the “fast/slow” variation, move your finger quickly or slowly. What the game teaches: Opposites and imitation.

Game: Walking, Walking

Number of kids: Any, though a smaller number will probably be easier. How the game is played: The verse is sung to the tune of “Frere Jacques” and the participants move according to the words of the song. They walk when singing about walking, hop when they sing about hopping, etc. Walking, walking Walking, walking Hop, hop, hop! Hop, hop, hop! Running, running, running, Running, running, running, Now we stop. Now we stop.

Tips for adults: Keep the circle of motion the right size for your group: large enough not to create traffic jams but small enough to keep the kids in the circle. What the game teaches: Different types of gross motor movement, including how to be still.

Game: the Water Article NotOver Available Online

Number of kids: Any. How the game is played: A simple verse is sung and each child gets a turn to be the “star” of the song. Before each verse, the adult asks, “Anna, what would you like to catch?” and Anna might say, “A tiger.” The verse is repeated with each child’s name and chosen animal until everyone has had a turn. Anna over the water (Move one hand across the body like a rippling wave.) Anna over the sea (Move the other hand across the body in same way.) Anna catch a tiger (Grab in front of you to “catch” the animal.) You can’t catch me! (Point at self.)

Tips for adults: Sometimes kids will need help with choosing an animal. Keep momentum going by encouraging swift decision-making. Giving the child a choice between two animals he or she knows is a good strategy. What the game teaches: Listening, waiting, and taking turns.

HOUSTON - (Jan. 18, 2007) – If your spouse is “sawing logs,” then a new, minimally invasive procedure for snoring could help you reclaim your Zzzz’s. Dr. Mas Takashima, clinical faculty member of the sleep medicine fellowship program at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), has seen success with a new technique to reduce or stop snoring called the pillar procedure. “The most appealing part of the procedure is that no surgery is required and it is a simple procedure which is done in the office,” said Takashima, assistant professor of otolaryngology at BCM. “Before, the only real way to stop snoring involved surgically removing or treating portions of the soft tissue from the back of the throat.” Snoring is usually caused when soft tissue in the throat vibrates as a person breaths while sleeping. Vibrations happen either near the back of tongue, the area around the tonsils, or the soft palate which hangs in the back of the throat. In most cases the soft palate, which includes the uvula, is to blame. In the pillar procedure, three small, firm, string-like structures, or pillars, are implanted into the soft palate, the soft tissue in the back of the throat. “The three pillars, which are less than an inch long, are inserted using a large needle-like device,” Takashima said. “The pillars help stabilize the soft tissue and stop vibrations. Since no tissue is surgically removed, discomfort is minimal ” Snoring can be a sign of a bigger problem such as sleep apnea, a disorder that causes a person to stop breathing repeatedly during sleep. It could lead to high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. “The pillar procedure is used only after we first make sure the snorer doesn’t have a more serious problem,” Takashima said. “The procedure is about 90 percent effective in reducing snoring in those who qualify.” Takashima said the pillars never have to be replaced, and the procedure, which uses local anesthesia similar to what a dentist would use, only takes about 15 minutes.

THE COLES CONNECTION

Before You Start an Exercise Program

there are a few questions to ask yourself to determine whether you should see your doctor first. QUESTION YOURSELF Your first step is to ask yourself how active you want to be. This may sound like a silly question - you’re probably planning on doing whatever you’re capable of, whether that’s a slow walk around the block or a vigorous step class. But if you’re of a certain age or have certain cardiovascular risk factors, you may need to see your physician before beginning a program that involves vigorous (as opposed to moderate) aerobic activity. Here’s how exercise intensities are typically defined: Low-to-Moderate - This is an intensity that can be sustained relatively comfortably for a long period of time (about 60 minutes). This type of exercise typically begins slowly, progresses gradually and usually isn’t competitive in nature. Vigorous - This is an intensity that is high enough to significantly raise both your heart and breathing rates, and is usually performed for about 20 minutes before fatigue sets in. Are you planning to participate in vigorous activities and are a man over 40 or a woman over 50? You should receive a medical exam first. The same is true for individuals of any age with two or more coronary artery disease risk factors. If you’re unsure if this applies to you, check with your physician. MORE QUESTIONS Now that you’ve made it through the first questions, there are a few more to answer. A YES to any ONE of the following questions means you should talk with your doctor, by phone or in person, BEFORE you start an exercise program. Explain which questions you answered ‘’yes’’ to and the activities you are planning to pursue. 1. Have you been told you have a heart condition and should only participate Copyright © 2007 Peel, Inc.

loss in the past six months? 8. Are you aware of any reason why you should not participate in physical activity? If you answered “no” to all of these questions, and you passed the first round of questions, you can be reasonably sure that you can safely take part in at least a moderate physical activity program. But again, if you are a man over 40 or a woman over 50 and want to exercise more vigorously, you should check with your physician before getting started. So, are you ready? If you are, but are unsure how to get started, consider contacting an ACE-certified Personal Trainer or joining a reputable fitness facility. For more information on finding a trainer, or for fitness information in general, visit the ACE Web site at www.acefitness.org. in physical activity recommended by a doctor? 2. Do you feel pain (or discomfort) in your chest when you do physical activity? When you are not participating in physical activity? While at rest, do you frequently experience fast, irregular heartbeats or very slow beats? 3. Do you ever become dizzy and lose your balance, or lose consciousness? Have you fallen more than twice in the past year (no matter what the reason)? 4. Do you have a bone or joint problem that could worsen as a result of physical activity? Do you have pain in your legs or buttocks when you walk? 5. Do you take blood pressure or heart medications? 6. Do you have any cuts or wounds on your feet that don’t seem to heal? 7. Have you experienced unexplained weight
