to know: go online to www.TASB. com. On the bottom of that website in the red area, in the far right column, click on “Buy Board.” When the Buy Board login page appears, in the top right click on the link for “Vendor Info.” In the middle section of the next page that appears, you will see a link to “New Vendor FAQ.” That is where you can have all of your questions answered and find out how to get started.

Once you’re ready, click on the “New Supplier/Vendor Registration” link on the top right of that page. From vehicles to industrial parts to office furniture, there are many goods that businesses in Washington County may be able to sell to Brenham ISD and other school districts throughout the state. Leadership 2013 ... Team Building September marked the second session of learning experiences for the 2013 Leadership Washington County participants. Kurt Podeszwa led a Team Building Retreat held at Camp For All. The group completed several physically and mentally challenging activities. Some of the activities included navigating a maze while blindfolded, following “Captain Kurt’s” orders on his imaginary ship, flipping a tarp while 24 people are standing on it, and other various small and large group exercises. The morning’s challenges brought out leadership skills and traits that some participants didn’t even know they had. They discovered new ways to

work effectively in groups and on their own. The afternoon session focused on the traits of Leading Leaders and the importance of effective communication. Kurt reminded them that, “People pay more attention to what you do than what you say,” and encouraged the class to focus on what they are doing each day, how they communicate, and what example they want to set. Camp Director Kurt Podeszwa, shared the mission and history behind Camp For All, which hosts over more than 7,000 campers annually, and also described the many volunteer opportunities that ex-

ist there daily. The day concluded with a walking tour of the camp grounds. This amazing state-of-the-art facility is completely barrier-free. There are no stairs, all bathrooms and shower stalls are wheelchair accessible and sidewalks are concrete and wide enough for two wheelchairs. There is even a tree house that was specially designed so that everyone can reach the treetops, regardless of their challenge! A world unto itself, Camp For All was designed with a “can do” attitude. At Camp For All, children and adults with special needs and challenging illnesses have the opportunity to experience horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, archery, water ac-

tivities, team sports, arts and crafts, nature programs, and much more at their own level. Among the many different animals they have are camp mascots “Forest,” the African Spurred Tortoise, and “Spot,” the blind and deaf horse. Special thanks to Kurt Podeszwa and Camp For All for allowing the use of its facility for the LWC Team Building session. The Leadership program is made possible by the generous sponsorship of our Chairman’s Circle members: Brenham Clinic, Brenham National Bank, Republic Services, and Scott & White Healthcare. The program runs through May 2013. Next year’s class will form in June/July, 2013.

The class really had to focus on Captain Kurt’s orders while on his imaginary ship.

During the afternoon session Kurt helped the class understand that what you see is not always what is there. The tarp exercise was the hardest of the day, but through teamwork and communication (and several failing attempts) the class finally succeeded!

The High Trust Fall lives up to its name – participants had to fully trust their classmates to catch them as they fell backwards.

On tour with Camp Director Kurt Podeszwa.

Antique Car Tour comes to Brenham

Tourism News

October 21-26, 2012 will find 192 vintage cars (and their owners) visiting and touring the Brenham/Washington County area. The Veteran Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) is proud to present the national 2012 AAA Revival Glidden Tour — “The Great Texas Trail Drive.” Some 430 car owners and passengers from all parts of the U.S. will headquarter in Brenham for six days and nights, driving their cars (all older than 1942) around the surrounding area as they participate in daily driving tours. These antique cars travel pre-determined routes, stopping in local towns to show off their vehicles; sometimes the drivers wear period costumes. The five days of touring feature the following destinations: Monday, Oct. 22 — Lake Somerville and Bryan/College Station Tuesday, Oct. 23 — Burton Cotton Gin, Carmine and Round Top Wednesday, Oct. 24 — Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and Navasota Thursday, Oct. 25 — New Ulm, Sealy Tractor Company and Brookwood Village Friday, Oct. 26 — Historic downtown Brenham, Fireman’s Park, Blue Bell Creameries, Bellville and Independence Special events for the group include a chuck wagon supper and mini-rodeo at the Washington County Fairgrounds Monday night, a special performance of the Bluebonnet Opry Wednesday night, Model T assembly at the Fairgrounds Thursday morning and closing banquet at the Fairgrounds Friday evening. The public is invited to visit any of the tour stops throughout the week. AAA Glidden Tours began in the early 1900s as a means of drawing attention to the condition of the road system of that era (which wasn’t designed for the horseless carriage). Automobile manufacturers began to participate in these road rallies to test their new models. During World War II, the rallies were dropped and then revived by the VMCCA to continue the antique car tours. The coveted Glidden trophy is still presented to the winner of the annual national event although the treacherous travel of the early tours is rarely, if ever, encountered today. “The purpose of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) is to encourage preservation, restoration and use of antique and historically significant automobiles. This is not a military veteran’s organization; the veterans in our name are the cars, not people. Our specialty is touring events, where we drive our cars to interesting places, meeting new people and visiting old friends along the way. We have fun while everyone gets to see, hear and enjoy

old cars driving on our highways.” From the organization’s website, www.vmcca.org. The AAA group will be staying in at least four of the local hotels, with some traveling via motor homes. Keep in mind that a typical traveler in Texas spends about $108 per day — times 400-plus Glidden people — times six days equals a significant economic impact for our area. The CVB is excited to welcome this group to the area and encourages everyone to welcome these visitors and enjoy their wonderfully restored cars.

Multi-tasking phenomenon: Smart phones provide help while on the go to navigate a destination or check flight schedules. Tablets are used more for comparison shopping, checking hotel rates and booking. “Eyeballs” for travelers include TripAdvisor or Expedia. (52 percent of all active travelers visited Expedia within the past 12 months; however, less than 5 percent then converted to a purchase.) In the travel decision process, first-time visitors use both online and off-line media (TV, magazines and travel brochures) while the last-minute traveler visits sites such as TripAdvisor or Expedia. Texas travel statistics: Texas is the third most visited state. Mexico is the largest international market. Canada (Ontario and Alberta) is the second largest tourism market. Europe, with the U.K. leading, is the third largest market.

Texas Travel Industry Association tidbits

Employees are so important to our local attractions, restaurants, shops and businesses. Not just in the tourism industry, but everywhere. Turnover costs employers big bucks and it hurts the delivery of good customer service. Business owners/managers might find the following questions revealing. They are questions any employer should ask to determine employee satisfaction and strive to retain quality employees to help the business achieve its goals. Does the employee know what is expected? Does the employee have the materials/equipment to do the job? Do employees have the opportunity to do what they do best every day? Have they received recognition in the past seven days? Does leadership encourage the employee’s development? Does the employee’s opinion count? Does the mission make the employee feel important? Are co-workers committed to quality work? In the past six months, has the manager talked to the employee about progress (strengths, goals, objectives)? Have employees had the opportunity to learn and grow this past year (training including webinars, additional responsibilities)?

Revolutionary Ghost Stories At the recent Texas Travel Industry Association conference, several dynamic speakers shared a great deal of valuable travel-related information with more than 400 attendees, including CVB Advertising/Public Relations Manager Lu Hollander. Within that outpouring of data, the following trends and related information are of interest. General Travel Behavior: Travel with children is gradually increasing. Multi-generational travel is at 23 percent (grandparents, parents, children). Celebration vacations are popular — life events such as reunions, weddings, milestone birthdays and anniversaries. This type of travel is planned further in advance, more money is spent, the stay is longer and more people come along. For a last-minute trip, the average planning time is six days in advance. Flash sales offered by hotels are appealing. Over 60 percent of travelers cite input from family and friends as a primary source of information when selecting vacation sites. Desirable vacation attributes: Safety, time to relax, scenery, a new destination.

As Halloween approaches, plan to head to Washington-on-the-Brazos for a look at things that go bump in the night. Learn stories that warn, teach, scare and delight. Presentations to be held at 11am, 1pm, 3pm. Tickets are $5/adult, $3/student. Held at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. For more information, call 936-8782214x 228 or visit online: www.birthplaceoftexas.com.
