Pastor Michael Freeman Words From The Pastor

Faith In Christ Is Seeing Walking by faith is often equated to a blind journey without perception or understanding; lacking insight for destinations or outcomes. Yet as Believers we are constantly reminded throughout the new testament that the just "shall" live by faith. Hebrews 11:1 says, faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence or proving mechanism of the existence of things that are not detected by our human senses. One of the most difficult things to do when we find ourselves in the midst of trials and difficult moments, is to solely rely on that which we cannot detect with our physical senses. It's hard for me to believe in a favorable outcome when my sight shows me a depleted bank account at the ATM machine.

Jerusalem Second Baptist Church 1036 South High St., Urbana OH (937) 653-8171

Service Times Sun: 11 a.m. Wed: 6:30 p.m.

It's a bit more difficult for me to trust when all I hear is negativity and false hopes. The word substance is the greek word hoop-os'-tas-is, and has the idea of the setting underneath of a support or foundation to provide a resting place. Trusting in Christ and His work at the cross is the foundation of our hope. Remember faith alone doesn't mean much. But when our faith in Jesus Christ becomes the foundation for our hope, it will lead and guide us to a successful end. My friends, no matter how dark your day gets or how troubled life becomes, keep trusting in the Lord. For faith in Christ is seeing. by Pastor Michael Freeman

Jerusalem Second Baptist Church Jerusalem Second Baptist Church has been a part of the Urbana Church community for over 160 years. “We plan on continuing that legacy and stand boldly on the shoulders of the tradition that has been established”, Pastor Freeman says. “Although we embrace this tradition, we are yet striving to reach farther and sustain and broaden our horizons to meet the "right now" needs of those whose path we cross. We have established new ministries over the past 3 years that will help carry us into the newness of what God has assigned for us to do”. Jerusalem Second Baptist Church (also known in the community as J2BC) strongly believes in ministering to the whole person by providing outlets that touch every aspect of life.

Freeman shares how they are building a winning team based on biblical principles and the call for the church to be both the salt and the light to all races, colors and ethnic cultures. Jerusalem Second Baptist Church 1036 S. High St., Urbana, Ohio

Lutheran Community Service of Logan County “Proclaiming God's love to all people through word, service and action.” The Lutheran Community Services, (LSC) is home of many services. The LSC has five different programs to help service Logan County. The Lutheran Thrift store, Food Pantry, Our Daily Bread of Bellefontaine, Loving Hands Adult Day Care and the Annual Christmas Basket Program. Kimberly Collum, LSC Executive Director, said, “We are not a part of the Lutheran church, we are our own entity and we are a non-profit tax exempt organization. We rely on grants, United Way and we are very much funded by local donations.” The programs of LSC were started by residents who saw a need in the community and wanted to make a difference. The members of the Board of Trustees are residents of Logan County and are aware of the many issues residents of Logan County face. Collum said, “The most recognized need is the Daily Bread, this is a free meal program that is offered to all who come through the door. No questions asked. Nothing will be asked of them. They are to be respected and served. It is a hot nutritious meal that runs five days a week until this December. Then it will go back to three days a week in January. This year we received enough funds to feed five days a week because of a grant and Zimmerman Realty.” With the ever-increasing needs of the community, these needs are needed more than ever. The LSC has had an increase of 875 meals from 2013 to 2014. In August LSC served 3,260 and in July served 3,911. “We see every dynamic coming through those doors from families, to children who just come in to eat or people who have been alone all day long and just want companionship.” Collum says.

“We ask all who volunteer to come in with a servants heart, you will come out with so much more. We show them the love that we have for God, by sharing ourselves, our time, a little piece of respect and we don't push God on them. We just love them.” The Lutheran Thrift Store provides a place where people can purchase slightly used clothing at little cost. Hygiene, household and food items are all sold at a reduced price. The LSC Food Pantry works with many of the social service agencies of Logan County. A single person or a family can visit the food pantry once a month and receive enough food for three meals for three days. Collum said, “We have clients fill out a form that is verified through LSC. If we have a client in need of food, clothing, or household items we have a voucher system to help these individuals. We need to know if they are getting help from other sources like food stamps. We would rather employ then enable and give them instruments to help them. By getting them in the system they can make their lives better and their caseworker can help them find things that we can't.” The LSC sponsors an annual Christmas Basket Program to help make the holiday season a little bit brighter for those less fortunate. Applications are available in September at Our Daily Bread. Those who qualify receive a food basket/or toy basket. “Eligibility is for Logan County residents who are 200% of the poverty level – which includes a lot of the working poor. We know this time of the year can be such a burden because of the money spent and we want to make it easier for them. All applicants are reviewed and verified,” Collum said.

by Pastor Micheal Freeman

She shared how applicants will not only receive canned goods, but also a ham – these hams cost about $67 each. She said it all depends on how much donations they have to work with. “It's because of the donations and the county pulling together that makes this program a success. We couldn't do this if we didn't have the support of the county,” Collum says. Last year the LSC Christmas Basket program dealt with over 600 applications. The program were fortunate enough to give children under the age of 12 a gift with each basket. Last year they served 487 children ages 0-10; 197 children ages 11-18; 728 adults ages 19 – 64 and 136 adults 65 and up. “We are all in this together” she says, “if we can't help someone in need why are we here? Our prices stay low in the thrift store. Anyone can walk through those doors. Everything that you donate here stays in Logan County.” The financial challenges are consistent for LSC. Food is more expensive, gas for the pick services, utility costs and the overall cost of living. The donations to the Thrift Store helps provide food for the hungry and crisis child care for those without resources. The donation to the Thrift Store supports all of the programs. For more information contact Kimberly Collum @ (937) 592-9914 or [email protected] The LSC is located at 223 Oakland Square, Bellefontaine meals are served M – F; 4:30 – 6:00 pm.

They have four pillars: Supportive Services, Community Development, Property Management and Homeownership. They provide safe decent housing that works within the community. Although they are not a faith based organization, they make their decisions based on faith.

Housing Services Alliance, Bellefontaine Ohio

Under their Supportive Services program they have 36 apartment complexes in 6 different states where they provide a variety of services for their tenants. Those services can be anything from getting local organizations to come in and give presentations, such as having the local Fire Department come in and talk about fire safety. Or the Red Cross to talk about the importance of CPR. Even working with the local Police where they come in and the kids meet them and another in Baltimore, Maryland. and their police dogs. HSA is privately funded by their own efforts. But they are looking at creating some educational components such as home buyer education, credit counseling and maybe even in-home healthcare. To continue to grow and provide housing opportunities they must look at how fund raising can help with providing additional capital. They will walk them through the process and if they qualify ultimately build them a house. They currently have a total agency staff of 13. The ministry is a part of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. The mission of the center is to offer Christian-based professional counseling that empowers growth within the individual; his or her relationship with family, friends and community; and in his or her relationship with God. Brenda Sanford, Director/Therapist at Light the Way Christian Counseling Center said, “We all have a professional degrees in counseling or clinical social work. We all are strong Christians. So the counseling center gives us the opportunity to offer professional counseling with a Spiritual emphasis. I tell my client God can do more for them then I can.” The center is a professional counseling service built upon Christian principles. It is open to Christians of all denominations and all levels of faith. It is also open to those who are not currently followers of Jesus Christ, but who are possibly curious about the love and grace they have heard about through God and Christ. She said, “It was a God thing on how this started. I was pretty confident God wanted me to do counseling. But never felt the call to apply to any of the secular agencies in town. In talking to another parent at a basketball game my daughter was playing in, she began telling me about the Christian counseling she was taking. I knew at that moment, that's definitely what I was supposed to do. It just felt like a God moment. We have now been around for 12 and half years.”

Heavenly Treats It is the time of year to start preparing for the holidays. I know don’t gasp, but Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I would like to share with you my favorites cut out sugar cookie recipe. I pull out all my cookie cutters this month. I start with my pumpkin shapes in the fall, and I don’t put this recipe away until the last heart has been eaten on Valentine’s Day. These cookie are tasty with icing or sprinkled with sugar. This recipe makes about 4 dozen cookies depending on the size of your cookies.

Sugar Cookies 1 1/2 cups butter (3 sticks), softened 2 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until well combined. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely. Ice with your favorite icing Once again, I hope you and your family enjoy this sweet treat. I look forward to sharing with you next month another new recipe for your friends and family to enjoy. I would also like to share some of your favorite recipes with the community. Please send me some of your favorites to be shared with our readers. Email recipes to: [email protected]
