Words from the Pastor

Pastor Earnest Brown Sr.

"No Coincidence" To the child of God, there is no such thing as coincidence and chance. God in His wisdom and providence orders our steps for His purposes and glory. Even what appears to be an accident or tragedy is an opportunity for God to ultimately mold and shape us for good. God’s wisdom contrasted with Satan’s lack of understanding is clearly seen throughout the Christmas story. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2: 6-10, that “we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers understood it…” Satan knew according to Micah 5:2 that the Messiah would be born in

Satan remembered from heaven resided at a level of glory unimagined on earth. He was sure that God in heaven would not allow His Son to be born in a barn. He probably told his demons to search the finest homes, the suburbs, the most illustrious surroundings and the newest housing developments. He didn’t expect Saint John Missionary Baptist Church the king to be born in an urban setting. But 34 W. Pleasant St., Springfield Ohio Bethlehem. Satan is not all-knowing. Therefore, he did not know the timing of the God fooled Satan. “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the birth. So, in another endless effort to thwart the purpose of God, he summoned wise” (1 Cor. 1:27). demons from around the universe to concentrate on the Holy Land, specifically around the region of Bethlehem. The first thing God did was choose a man and woman from Nazareth, not Bethlehem, to become the parents of the Savior. Satan It is a reminder to all of us that if God will use a man and woman from Nazareth, He was looking for a couple to come out of Bethlehem. will use a man or woman from Springfield or Urbana, Clark County or Champaign Secondly, He saw to it that the woman’s purity and morality would not be in County, the suburbs or the projects, to question. In Luke 1 the angel Gabriel visits a young virgin named Mary and accomplish His purposes and will. With God’s message was clear: conception will come by the “power of the Holy God, nothing happens by coincidence. All Spirit.” The child will be both the “Son of God” and the One fulfilling the He needs is a willing heart to receive that prophet’s promise of a king from the line of David. on Christmas Day God became flesh and Third, God arranged to move Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem in time for the birth dwelt among us. He came for the purpose without drawing attention. When Caesar Augustus called for census of the empire, of saving us from our sin, so that God God had put it in his heart. Proverbs 21:1 states, “The king’s heart is like channels could use our lives to reflect Him to a world in need of a Savior. Years later, of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he wishes.” Mary and nudged by the Holy Spirit, John the Joseph were among thousands returning to their ancestral home for the census. With Bethlehem’s inns and available homes filled, the young couple took the only Baptist would herald, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the thing available, a stable. St. John Missionary Baptist Church - Old Sanctuary

Pastors and members of St John have always had a vision, looking forward to building a legacy. Even though black people worshiped in the available white churches in the 1800's, they were eager to establish their own Church 1819 first black church in Springfield, North Street African Methodist Episcopal was organized. St. John Baptist Church was established in 1886 in the old German Lutheran Building on the corner of Fisher and Columbia Street. By 1900, the first Missionary Society was organized. Fifty industrious members of the congregation moved to the location at 34 West Pleasant Street. The building was quite small, consisting of the sanctuary that was divided into the front and back, with a small balcony above the back portion. A pot-bellied stove heated the back section of the sanctuary. The Unfinished basement was only partially dug out. Records indicate that St. John held a play on Friday, June 11th, 1909 entitled “Scenes in the Union Depot,” cost of admission was 10 cents per person. During the depression of 1921, St.John Baptist Church employed over 40 of the out of work members who were hired to dig out more of the basement to accommodate a place for a cooking stove and a restroom. St John prospered and grew so that in 1929, property was purchased at 510 and 512 South Center Street. The vision was for the future planning of building a new church. It was in the late 1920’s / early 1930’s that several families donated the stained glass windows to the church.

In 1937, an annex was constructed consisting of a study for the pastor, and a choir robe room that also doubled as a Sunday school classroom. The members did most of the work. Then, in 1957 additional properties east of the church were purchased. The Church became incorporated and added “Missionary” to its title. The long-range plan to build an education building became a reality in 1962. Again, many members donated much of their time to assist in the construction of this addition. Men of St John narrowly escaped injury when a portion of the building collapse as the basement was being dug out. In 1971 after a fund drive, the parking lot was built. In 1981, additional property was purchased on the northwest corner of South Fountain. In 1983 another fund drive was successful and was used to dig out the remaining basement under the sanctuary where many of our classrooms are presently located. In 2001, we are currently embarking on a project to bring into reality the vision that members held back in 1929. A common thread runs through St. John Missionary Baptist church’s history, a vision to increase God's kingdom, assist those in need, to work together, to know that our church is not merely a building, but a congregation who is spirit

filled, acknowledging a need to worship and serve our Redeemer and Savior, who with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, guides our every deed. It is evident that St. John Missionary Baptist Church has been “Building a Legacy of Faith” since its inception. We have much to remember and much to yet encounter. As we continue to strengthen our prayer life, increase our Bible Study, enrich our praise and worship, we can encourage our future leaders to expand the vision and “KEEP GOD FIRST”. "The Young and the Righteous" THE ISRAEL BROWN PROJECT The Next Big Thing...

"In 2007 I had never given testimony. I hadn't done "Spoken Word". I wasn't involved in ministry. But I felt as if God spoke to me. He told me He wanted me to be apart of bringing His church together. He wanted to go beyond denominations, beyond black and white, beyond religion, and into relationship. He wanted me to do this by bringing together His people through the arts.

"What is the true meaning of Christmas?" Answer: The true meaning of Christmas is love. John 3:16-17 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." The true meaning of Christmas is the celebration of this incredible act of love. The real Christmas story is the story of God's becoming a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ. Why did God do such a thing? Because He loves us! Why was Christmas necessary? Because we needed a Savior! Why does God love us so much? Because He is love itself (1 John 4:8). Why do we celebrate Christmas each year? Out of gratitude for what God did for us, we remember His birth by giving each other gifts, worshipping Him, and being especially conscious of the poor and less fortunate. The true meaning of Christmas is love. God loved His own and provided a way—the only Way —for us to spend eternity with Him. He gave His only Son to take our punishment for our sins. He paid the price in full, and we are free from condemnation when we accept that free gift of love. "But God demonstrated His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Read more:
