MAY 2018 Vol. 60 No. 5

from the Pastor

In eleventh grade creative writing class, Mrs. Curtis tried to teach me that an article like this one should have one thematic idea. The rest of the article should then center on the one theme. Well, with apologies to Mrs. Curtis, this article has several areas of focus because May is certainly a month with several areas of focus at FBC. Here are a few…

n The month of May means Mother’s Day. Each year we celebrate moms with a Sunday of recognition and appreciation. Certainly only one day is not enough to say ‘Thanks’ to our moms. God has provided moms who have helped us along in our lives. So this month we express our gratitude to God for moms, the ones who birthed us and the ones who have adopted us spiritually along the way.

n The month of May means Graduates. Commencement exercises will remind those receiving degrees of the new opportunities opened by graduation. Congratulations to our graduates! We can’t wait to see where God will lead you.

n The month of May means Deacons. The church will select men to the Deacon Body. We celebrate the service of those who complete their term with grateful appreciation and we anticipate those God will lead to take their place. Please prayerfully consider this uniting opportunity around the ancient but still very relevant office of service in church. Maybe Mrs. Curtis wouldn’t be too disappointed after all. As I think about it, May does have one theme at FBC: a growing church celebrating God’s work and provision in His people. Let’s celebrate together. I’ll see you in church on Sunday. Don

More to LOVE about First

by Brooke Hutson Gibson

With Vacation Bible School right around the corner, it’s important to remember the impact that week can have on the lives of our children. Nine years ago, Bryce Addy accepted Christ as his Savior during VBS. Since then, he has grown in his faith journey and has been actively involved in our children’s and youth ministries. “I enjoy the fellowship and community I feel when I go to church at FBC,” said Bryce. “I serve because I love knowing that not only am I doing things to benefit my church and the community, but also to further the witness of Christ.” Bryce is a senior at Lafayette High School and is the son of Dina & Hank Addy. In the Fall, he plans to attend Mississippi State and major in biomedical engineering. Watching our youth grow in faith and service, is just one more thing to love about First.
