NO SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN TODAY Today is the last Sunday of the month during the summer, so our children’s Sunday School classes will not meet. Please worship with your family. Primary Sunday School 4 Year Old Teachers Needed Do you love children? Do you love the Bible? Would you be willing to share the Gospel with our four year old Sunday School children? We are in need of two adult teachers for this class. Curriculum and materials are provided. Please pray about this special opportunity and call Shannon Bolick with any questions or to join our team. We are also searching for an assistant teacher in our first grade classroom. Rotation Station Trivia Contest After a battle of the minds to rival Biblical scholars, the winners of this year’s “End of the Year Bible Trivia Contest” are…THE FOURTH GRADERS! Blessing of the Backpacks As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to invite students of all ages to bring their backpack to worship with them on September 4. We will be asking God’s blessings on the new year of school activities and using your backpacks as a symbol at all services. For those worshiping at 9:45, we ask the children to join us in worship at 9:45. Promotion / Kick Off Sunday September 11 is our promotion Sunday as we kick off a new year of children’s ministry programs. On this day, children will move to their new grade levels in Sunday School. Children should go directly to their new classes. Second graders will join Rotation Station on the second floor. Children’s Sabbath 2016 Once again we will celebrate the National Children’s Sabbath by having children lead us in worship. This year children will lead all three services on October 16. If your child would like to participate, please let Shannon Bolick know. Our theme will be “All I Needed To Know.” There are ways for everyone to share their talents. Fifth graders have the special opportunity to help share the message. We are also looking for children who would like to share their talents of music or dance. Third Grade Bibles Every year we present third graders with new Bibles on our celebration of Children’s Sabbath. If you have a rising third grader, please pick up a Third Grade Bible form found in the Gathering Space, outside the chapel, or at room 203. The deadline to turn in names for the Bibles is September 18.

YOUTH Thank you for a fun summer! There are no activities planned for this upcoming week. Rest up and get ready for our big Fall Kickoff Sunday, September 11 from 5-7. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and for a great year ahead of us. Rising 6th Graders Can’t wait to meet everyone. Please make sure to email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. You don’t want to miss a thing!

Sunday, September 11, 5:00 – 7:00 Fall Kickoff/Parent meeting Please come check us out. We will be sharing a potluck meal, learning about the year ahead, and participating in games/fun get-to know you activities and worshipping with our new Youth Praise Band. Bring your parents to join in the excitement!

SMALL GROUP STUDY: What It Means to Worship What this study covers: This 8-week study will cover historical development and theological understanding of Christian worship as an offering of thanks and listening for the voice of God as Holy Other. The reading and exercises will include Corporate as well as individual worship practices. Dates: The study will begin September 7/8 and be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday mornings from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. The study ends November 2/3 and will not meet October 5/6. Starting September 14 after the Wednesday Night Meal at Fredericksburg UMC Hopefully you are appreciating the message series: “Good to Great in God’s Eyes” based on the book by Chip Ingram. There is also an excellent small group study to help you learn more and dig deeper. Starting September 14 on each Wednesday night at 6:15 or 6:30 following a delicious dinner served at our church. Larry and Mell Davies will be teaching this series. We hope you will join them. Each Wednesday night – Dinner between 5 and 6:30, Class will start between 6:15 and 6:30. Our classes will cover the same 10 important concepts. Sept. 14 Getting Started - Think Great Thoughts Sept 21 Read Great Books Sept 28 Pursue Great People, Dream Great Dreams Oct 5 Pray Great Prayers, Take Great Risks Oct 12 Make Great Sacrifices, Enjoy Great Moments Oct 19 Empower Great People, Develop Great Habits, Conclusion Our prayer is for this series and book to cultivate your desire to follow Jesus more closely. Good to Great in God’s Eyes is about a willingness to improve yourself. But desires don’t accomplish much if there’s no follow through, no plan to accomplish them. We hope and pray this will serve as a blueprint for building the life God has designed for you. The small group study starts Sept. 14 at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, room 210. Join us as we work toward moving from Good to Great in God’s Eyes.

Help Mission Control Mission Control is an area in the church that groups/individuals may use to collect items for projects that are needed to serve our community, country, and world. Mission Control is located near the elevator in the Gathering Space outside of Kobler Hall. We are in the process of updating information on the various groups/individuals that are collecting items in Mission Control. In order to have the most up-to-date records, we are asking anyone that is currently in charge of a bin in Mission Control to contact: Lisa Simmermon at [email protected] or 540-785-8664. Please provide the following information: a contact person and/or their email or phone number, the start and end date for the project and what is being collected. In the future we will print the list of items being collected in the bulletin.

Volunteer In Missions Needs Our Help! The tornado that struck Virginia on Feb. 24, 2016 caused widespread damage and death from Waverly VA thru Tappahannock VA and could have just as easily struck the Fredericksburg area. FUMC has the opportunity to assist in rebuilding the community of Tappahannock beginning the week of September 19 – 23 through UMVIM. There is much to be done but no special construction skills are required. FUMC is trying to see if there is enough interest in putting a “Team” together to support part of the week. Please look into your hearts and see if this is something we can do for our neighbors. If interested please e-mail [email protected] and remember: Prayer Care Share

SCHOOL DRESSING DAYS A big thank you to all of you who supported School Dressing Days this year with donations of money, shoes, outerwear, jeans, toiletries, undies and socks, shirts, and backpacks. A special thank you to those who gave your time and energy to work at the event or setting up for it. Everything went very smoothly and we served 1,100 children this year. We’ll be back in 2017!

Van Driving Opportunity Fredericksburg UMC has a wonderful opportunity to reach out to the campus of the University of Mary Washington and welcome college students to come and worship with us. This specific opportunity includes picking up and dropping off college students using the church van. Going off to college for the first time where you do not know many people can be daunting. Having a church home in your college town can help. Having an anchor of faith in the midst of the college years can make a difference in one's collegiate experience. And, did you know, that some of the UMW students who have attended FUMC in the past have gone on to be ministers and done other great things to change the world. Our offer to give college students a ride can make all the difference. To help by being on a rotation of drivers, please contact Pastor Robb [email protected]

Volunteers Needed Take a look around the church Sunday as the worship service unfolds. Many volunteers participate: ushers, communion servers, scripture readers, communion preparers. We need more volunteers. Prayerfully consider offering some of your time to serve our church in this way. Please contact John or Kitti Mann for more info and to volunteer: 540-891-1671; [email protected]
