TIMES Harvest United Methodist Church | Volume 18, Issue 9 | October, 2015

Go. “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age” (Matthew 28:19-20). I can’t get those words out of my head. As the launch team and other committed pioneers have spent the last year working towards the public launch of Harvest Bayshore on 10.11.15, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what it means to go. Jesus’ words to the disciples at the end of Matthew’s gospel are words for every disciple. The call to go out into God’s world, sharing the love of God is always upon us. This month Harvest lives into this command to go through the beginning of worship as Harvest Bayshore, through the idea of one church in two locations. The call to Bayshore is about being in mission in God’s world. The call to Bayshore is about welcoming and being welcomed by a new community, is about growing together in our faith, and is about serving the world, beginning in the Bayshore community. Together we’ll explore the community, make friends and neighbors, serve the Lee Middle School community, and dream of creative ways to offer the love of God to those around us. We will be challenged to be flexible enough to respond to the opportunities God presents us, that we might in fact be changed as we seek to offer others the change of life with God. Whether you worship at the Harvest Lakewood Ranch or Harvest Bayshore campus, God’s call to go extends to you! It’s a big mission, sometimes a frightening mission, but it’s always a life-giving mission to be about the work of making disciples! The invitation is yours: go welcome, go grow, go serve. Go into the world, rejoicing in the mission of God’s coming kingdom!

SPROUTS IS BACK

Sprouts is back in session and going strong! There are 125 bright and happy faces coming through our doors each week, all sporting backpacks and a readiness to learn through play. It was a great first month! We are excited to announce that we are able to offer BOTH of our specials, Music and Spanish, on a weekly basis. Previously, these “specials” were offered every other week, but we are pleased to be able to incorporate them on a weekly basis this year so that our students have even more opportunities to learn and grow through music and foreign language. We are currently accepting names for our 2015-16 school year wait lists. The lists are filling up quickly, so if you or someone you know is interested in placing a child on one of our wait lists for any age group, you’ll want to contact Sprouts Director, Callie MacLeod, soon. You may call the Sprouts office and leave a voice mail or send an email to Callie. Please leave the following information: your full name, your child’s name and date of birth, a contact phone number and email address, and session preference. For 2 and 3 year olds you may choose Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Tuesday, Thursday. VPK for 4 year olds is 5 days a week. There is no fee or obligation to place your child on a wait list here at Sprouts. The registration process for the 2016-17 school year will begin in mid-February. At that time we will begin calling families on our lists until the classes are fully enrolled. Feel free to call us to check your child’s status on the wait list if you have not heard from us by March 1, 2016. More Info: Callie MacLeod | 941.907.7333 [email protected]

HARVEST KIDS Growing in Faith: Yearly Milestones

LAKEWOOD RANCH CAMPUS

Upcoming Opportunities

Passing on the faith from one generation to the next is at the heart of what Harvest is all about. Milestones of Faith events are ways to bring an awareness of the presence of God to families by pointing out God’s presence in some key events during our journey of faith. Milestones have four key components: • Naming the sacred and secular events that shape our identities and give us a sense of belonging to Jesus Christ. • Equipping families to model faith practices within their homes. • Blessing individuals and marking the occasion with a worship celebration. • Gifting a tangible item as a reminder of the event being celebrated and of God’s ongoing love. On Sunday, September 13, we gave new Bibles to 15 new Second Graders and then held an interactive class with the children and their parents to learn more about our Bibles and how to use them. On Sunday, October 25, during Sunday school, we will offer a special communion class for Third Graders and their parents, during each service. Explore what communion is and why we celebrate it here at Harvest and in Christian churches around the world. We will also bake bread and make communion cups together.

World Communion Sunday is celebrated on October 4. During worship, we will have a Family Worship Weekend and celebrate communion together as the whole Harvest family. On November 29 we will have our Hanging of the Greens service. This is a great family service as we decorate the Harvest Centre for Christmas. December 6 is the first Sunday in Advent and it is a Family Worship Weekend. Following that worships services, Harvest families are invited to eat lunch together and then go Christmas caroling at a local assisted-living facility.

Sunday School We hope you will make Sunday School and church an important part of your family’s week. Be on the look out for the special events and classes that help your family grow in their faith. Harvest Kids Sunday School is growing and we would love for you to be a part of that excitement. If you would like to serve as a teacher, shepherd, or substitute for Harvest Kids Sunday School please contact Catherine Sykes at [email protected]. We would love to have you!

HARVEST KIDS SPOTLIGHT Sydney Nolin is a fifth grader and part of Harvest Kids.

She was one of the kids who was a part of Music and Drama Camp this summer. During camp, kids are divided into groups by which group is acting or singing or dancing together. It turned out that the group Sydney was in was all kids going into Kindergarten or first grade. Sydney never complained about not being with her friends or being the only one her age in that group. In fact, she was a great leader, helping the younger kids learn their parts and dances. For the performance, she sang a beautiful solo while the younger kids danced. I asked her about that experience and this is what she shared:

“It turned out to be fun, but at first I was nervous to be the only older one. God gave me courage and I know the little kids were looking up to me. Afterwards people told me how proud they were of me and they made me feel good. I’m glad I got to do that and that God helped me.”

HARVEST YOUTH STAFF UPDATE Harvest Youth Ministry was blessed by Krista Mulhollen’s ministry over the last year. Recently Krista transitioned to a ministry position at a different church with a schedule that allows her to spend more time with her husband and three children. We are grateful for her time at Harvest and will keep Krista, her family, and her ministry in our prayers. As Harvest is searching for a new full-time Youth Minister, Co-Pastor Steve Price will be providing leadership. Steve has been involved with the youth ministry at Harvest from the very beginning and has lots of exciting plans for this fall.

October Message Series Is Anybody Up There?: A Message Series on Prayer Prayer. It’s one of the most basic and yet most mystifying components of faith. For some, it happens as naturally as breathing. For others, it hardly ever happens because it seems so unnatural. At some point, anyone who spends time praying at all finds themselves facing doubts and questions. Join us in October for a series that explores some of the most often-asked questions.

Become a Harvest Lifesaver! The frequency of public-initiated CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has been increasing over recent years.
