What’s New at Hearing Solutions Audiology Center A Message from Dr. Robinson... Wow! This year has gone by so fast! I can’t believe we are quickly approaching Fall with the kids going back to school and the television commercials blaring “Are you ready for some football?” As our 2015 is flying by, we Dr. Robin Robinson Owner/Audiologist are very proud of the community outreach events that Hearing Solutions has been able to provide so far. At the beginning of the year, we rolled out a plan to provide 1,000 Hearing Screenings free to the residents in our community and we are well on our way to meeting that goal. Our audiologists have provided

educational seminars at the West County Library to educate people about the importance of hearing healthcare. Dr. Connelly has provided fun, learning sessions to local elementary school students about the importance of protecting their hearing from dangerously loud sounds by iPods and other devices. Hopefully, as the weather cools off, you will be able to venture out to some of the upcoming Health Fairs and Community Events. Expect to see our staff at these events including Fort Meade Retiree Appreciation Day, St. Joe’s Health Fair, Odenton Day and Crofton Festival on the Green. Please stop by and say Hi if you attend. Our goal is not just to provide excellent hearing health care but also to support the community that we all love and live in.

Smart buying decisions: How hearing aids give you a great return on your investment Courtesy of the Better Hearing Institute If you’re one of the nearly 40 million Americans who suffer with hearing loss, maybe it’s time to consider investing in your hearing health. Research shows that the rewards can be substantial. In fact, identifying and addressing hearing loss has been shown to positively influence virtually every aspect of an individual’s life, helping people personally, professionally and even financially. New technological advances have revolutionized hearing aids in recent years. Today’s hearing aids can automatically adjust to all kinds of sound environments and filter out noise. Many are virtually invisible, sitting discreetly and comfortably inside the ear canal. Best of all, many are wireless, so you can stream sound from smartphones, home entertainment systems and other electronics directly into your hearing aid(s) at volumes just right for you. Here are six ways that investing in professionally fitted hearing aids—if recommended by a hearing care professional following a comprehensive hearing evaluation—could bring you a greater return on your investment than you ever imagined. Using hearing aids reduced the risk of income loss by 90-100 percent for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65-77 percent for those with severe to moderate hearing loss, according to a Better Hearing Institute (BHI) study. Research shows a link between hearing loss and dementia, leading experts to believe that interventions, like hearing aids, could potentially delay or prevent dementia. Research is ongoing. Keep you on your feet. A Johns Hopkins study showed that people in middle age (40-69) with even just mild hearing loss were nearly three times more likely to have a history of falling. Hearing loss may take cognitive resources away from what is needed for balance and gait, experts have suggested. Relieve stress and lift your mood. When people with hearing loss use hearing aids, many feel more in control of their lives and less self-critical, BHI research shows. Tame that ringing in your ears. Hearing aids can help reduce the prominence of tinnitus by amplifying background sound. Just taking the focus off the tinnitus can provide relief for many people. Strengthen your relationships. Research shows that using hearing aids can help improve interpersonal relationships. Addressing hearing loss really is a smart buying decision.

By Dr. Connelly Most medications, supplements, and vitamins carry some risk of side effects. Certain medications can damage the ear, resulting in hearing loss, ringing in the ear, or balance disorders. These drugs are considered ototoxic. Hearing problems caused by these drugs can sometimes be reversed when the drug therapy is discontinued. Sometimes, however, the damage is permanent.

What are the effects I may notice from ototoxic medications? Usually the first sign of ototoxicity is ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Over time, you may also develop hearing loss. This hearing loss may go unnoticed until your ability to understand speech is affected. Which medications are ototoxic? There are more than 200 known ototoxic medications (prescription and over-the-counter) on the market today. These include medicines used to treat serious infections, cancer and heart disease.

To date, Dr. Robinson and Dr. Connelly have provided 510 complimentary hearing screening to the people in our community. We are grateful that our patients have recognized the importance of hearing screenings in their overall healthcare plan. 2. Hearing tests including Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) can help us monitor your hearing health if you are undergoing chemotherapy or other aggressive treatment options. You should monitor your hearing before, during and after treatment.
