JOY IN BEING SECOND Jason Strand

Introduction

June 21/22

We all have a natural desire to be first, but true joy comes from following Christ’s example—putting others first and ourselves second. Placing the needs of others above our own is a choice that Jesus modeled during his time on earth, and as his followers, we must strive to imitate this humility. When we choose to be second, we will carry an unmistakable joy that will last through eternity.

Discussion Questions 1.

In Philippians 2:3, Paul states, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” What are some ways you can value others higher than yourself? Think of opportunities in your family, community, and workplace.

2. Consider the difference Jason Strand explained between genuine humility and self-deprecation. What are some traits that define humility? How have those traits carried a negative impression in today’s society? Read through Philippians 2:5-8. How does having a Christlike attitude remove the negative stigma of humility? 3. Who we imitate sheds light on who we are and what we value. Read Ephesians 5:1-2. Are the disciplines you practice based on Jesus’ life or do they tend to be self-promoting? What steps can you take to better align your path with Christ? 4. Jason Strand taught, “To be nothing isn’t to think less of yourself; it’s to think about yourself less.” How does thinking about yourself less lead to joy? This week, where do you need to focus more on others?

Commit to Memory But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Matthew 23:12

KEY SCRIPTURE Philippians 2:3-11 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. But in humility consider others as better than yourself. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Who, being in the very nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing by taking on the very nature of a servant. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Ephesians 5:1-2 Be imitators of God, therefore as dearly loved children, and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave up his life for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Matthew 23:12 But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
