January 7 Baptism of Our Lord and Epiphany
This is the day we celebrate our Lord’s Baptism and remember the promises attached to our own. The worship services will include a rite of renewal of our Baptismal Covenant. We will recall one again what it means to live as a Baptized child of God. It would be wonderful to celebrate Baptisms during our service as well. If you are considering a Baptism or have someone for the pastors to contact, please let us know. It is also the day that we commemorate the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby Jesus. On this Sunday we will be installing our council as well as our W-ELCA leaders for 2018.
First Communion Preparation
If you know of your child or grandchild that is ready to receive this sacrament please contact Pastor Jon. Traditionally at Clairemont we have focused preparation in 5th grade. However this is not helpful for all children. We would like to discuss how you participate in the preparation process and help you to determine if your child is ready for this class. We will also like to give everyone the opportunity to participate in parts of the class as well. If you have a child, grandchild, friend, relative or neighbor you think could participate in this learning opportunity please contact Pastor Jon in the church office. This year our class will be held on a Saturday and we would like to celebrate First Communion Sunday will be on February 4. In the class we will talk about what communion means and how it has been celebrated in history. We will experience our communion liturgy and practice our participation in the sacrament. A celebration of the Passover feast will help us understand the origins of our ritual and see how it ties into Jesus’ last supper. Finally we will create our own chalice to help us remember the event. If you are interested in the opportunity please make a reservation with Pastor Jon and come and be a part of this great day.

CCSA Holiday Food Baskets Another amazing act of generosity! Thank you to all who contributed and participated in CCSA Holiday Food Baskets. Thank you for the money donated, bringing one or more of the requested items, making complete baskets, arranging for your group to assemble baskets and all that went into a fun project. CCSA distributed over 200 baskets and CLC made a memorable Christmas for 40 families! I wanted to share a few of the highlights: Angela for her creation of the Reverse Advent Calendar and keeping us on track with announcements and reminders, Rita for help taking inventory of donations and then shopping for over $400 of goods to finish all the baskets and Jeff & Keith for transporting all the baskets to St Marks Church for pick-up by CCSA clients. Thank you for your continued support of CCSA!

Stewardship Wrap-up – New Consecration Sunday We want to say “Thank You” to everyone for your participation in our stewardship campaign. We have again affirmed our congregation’s desire to be a growing, dynamic and thriving ministry. To date, our personal commitments to this ministry have reached over $280,000. This level of pledges will make our budget doable but as usual we will not have room for many extras. We are blessed that 33 people increased their pledge, up $20,716. We had 17 new pledges for a total of $40,436. We also had 6 people decrease their pledge for a loss of $4,504. All said we are up about $23,000 over last year’s pledges. We are blessed by very generous people of God here at CLC. These commitments, as well as other income available to the congregation, will enable us to prepare a spending plan or budget that reflects God’s generous activity among us. Together we are witnesses to the abundant life we know in Jesus Christ. Thanks again for your generous support.
Happy New Year!
Feliz Año Nuevo!

Gather Bible Study “Multiple Meanings: Learning from Other Interpretations”
By Mark Allan Powell The winter 2018 Gather Bible Study is going to engender a lot of discussion. Mark Allan Powell is a professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. He has also taught at seminaries in Estonia, Russia and Tanzania, edited the “Harper Collins Bible Dictionary” and written more than 100 articles and 25 books on the Bible and religion. What does the Bible mean to you? How do other people understand the Bible – people who are of a different gender, ethnicity or nationality? Here’s your chance to take part in a different kind of Bible study – and have fun exploring how and why Bible stories mean different things to different people.
