Miss the training in August? Here’s another opportunity on Saturday, January 12, 9:00AM to 3:00PM. This training is an opportunity for all who are interested in learning more about making disciples. People who would like to become Life Group Leaders should attend. Register now by contacting Pastor Matt (208-957-9364), Bob Kalthoff (call or text 818-314-7481), or Judy Kalthoff (call or text 818-314-7480). We need people who have previously completed this training to help with this one. Contact Pastor Matt, Bob, or Judy if you can help!

Dear Friends in Christ, Isn’t it fascinating when new things are discovered? Sometimes new things are discovered because people go to great lengths. For example, a few months ago scientists discovered a whole new planet and gave it the catchy name of 2015 TG387. It’s 80 astronomical units away (1 AU is the distance from the earth to the sun) so it’s two and half times further away than Pluto. But now, it’s on the map! Sometimes new things are discovered simply by accident. That’s how a chemistry professor discovered the newest color. A student in his class put a mixture of Yttrium, Indium and Manganese oxides into the furnace and presto! We have a new color of blue called YInMn Blue. It’s the first new hue of blue in 200 years. Take that, cobalt! And you? What’s new with you? What if there was something in you just waiting to be discovered? I think there is and it has something to do with your spiritual DNA, that is, who you are in Christ! So here is the big discovery...by virtue of your baptism, you are not only called to be a disciple of Jesus, you are called to be a disciple maker for Jesus. I know, you’ve heard the words before. It’s easy to talk about discipleship, but we have to actually do it if we want the joy of discovery. If you were present in worship on December 9, you noticed a group of people who were commissioned in the discipleship process. They attended a one-day training in August and also took part in a model life group in October. From this group of people, new life groups are now starting which provide a place for people to connect with one another and grow in Christ. I encourage you to join us for a discipleship training on Saturday, January 12, 9 am- 3 pm. Lunch is served. You may want to become a life group leader or co-leader, or perhaps you just want to learn more about the process of how God grows people. The methodology is entirely biblical--discipleship happens by baptizing (one-time moment) and teaching obedience (ongoing process) to all of Jesus’ commands. We need authentic relationships, an intentional leader and a reproducible process just as Jesus demonstrated. Some things are discovered on purpose; other thing are discovered unexpectedly. I think discipling could fit in both categories. As God reveals and leads us to a greater understanding of His claim on our lives as disciple makers, doesn’t something within us stir? There is so much out there just waiting to be discovered--new challenges, new stories, new relationships. Yes, even a new you! In Christ,

Pastor Matt Henry

From Pastor Tom’s Pen

A River of FORGIVENESS

I grew up in Toledo, Ohio. We had relatives in Buffalo, New York and almost every year during the summer we went to see them. More often than not we made the trip to Niagara Falls. I didn’t realize how lucky I was. So many people in the West have never seen the Falls. It was a thrilling experience for me and my brothers. The Falls plunges 160 feet into a thundering, surging river. At the brink, 397,000 tons of water rush over the edge. Just imagine being caught in the currents above Niagara. There would be a point of no return, a moment of going over the edge and a need for God’s grace and mercy. My message on Christmas Eve was entitled “A Light has Dawned.” In our text the prophet Isaiah pointed out the story of our personal moral failure. It is similar to the helpless, hopeless feeling we would have if we went over Niagara Falls. Some of us might feel we do okay in treading the spiritual waters of life. James writes in 2:10: “For whoever shall keep the law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of ALL.” Once we go over the edge, all that remains is the need for mercy. All we can hope for from a just God is forgiveness. The Bible teaches over and over a timeless reminder that a repentant person can find inexhaustible waters of undeserved love and forgiveness through Jesus who came into our sin-darkened world. Without the assurance of forgiveness, life can end in despair. Is there hope for those who have felt that they have been so bad that they can’t be forgiven? If we believe our emotions, we may feel we have gone too far or we have just repeated the same sin too many times. It may be that our self-contempt seems deserved, but there is hope. God wants us to believe in His ability to forgive the sins that we cannot forget. The Bible teaches us there are fresh-falling waters of forgiveness equal to the falls of our personal failures. God has found a way to satisfy the demands of the law while still offering forgiveness to the worst of sinners. God is just and angry about our sin, but it is not a denial of His love. He cares too much to ignore that harm we are doing to ourselves. God has revealed Himself to us in the infinite God-Man, Jesus Christ. In Jesus we find an accurate picture of the balance between God’s love and anger. Jesus did not come to condemn us. He came to save us from our sin and God’s wrath. The moment we receive Jesus as Savior, we are given immunity from eternal punishment. Does that mean that we are no longer accountable for our wrongs? No! We are still subject to natural and legal consequences. We still can risk our reputation, health and our relationships by unprincipled living. We especially remember this in the Christmas season. God came into the world as the Christ-Child to appease God’s wrath, demonstrate His love, forgive our sin, and promise eternal life with Him heaven. He did this by dying on the cross and suffering the pain of hell in our place. The question that remains as we begin this New Year, 2019 in the year of our Lord: HOW THEN SHALL WE LIVE? We should live lives that reflect our gratitude for what He has done for us. We should live lives that reflect the model of our Master Teacher: we should be INTENTIONAL RELATIONAL DISCIPLES, living and sharing the message of God’s love and forgiveness to everyone that the Holy Spirit puts IN OUR WAY! God Bless and guide you as we begin a New Year with His grace, strength, and zeal.

Happy Winter from Preschool!

FRIENDSHIP CELEBRATION PRESCHOOL Registration for Fall Preschool Classes 2018-19 765 East Chinden Blvd., Meridian, ID 83646 [email protected]/208-288-2404 Preschool Director—Lori Jensen

We hope you had a lovely Christmas and are ready for a fantastic 2019! Our classrooms are decorated with stars and colors of blue and white. Our activities are centered on snow and counting books and polar bears and penguins. In chapel, we’re learning about what Jesus’ life was like as a child. We’re looking forward to a visit from Idaho Botanical Garden. They’re bringing a program titled “Life on the Mountain,” featuring plants and animals who live high up in the rocks and snow. IBG offers many educational resources for children of all ages. We always look forward to their visit. Think snow! In His precious Love, Preschool Staff

Open Enrollment for the 2019-2010 School Year begins on Tuesday, January 29th! (Tuesday, January 22nd for continuing students & FCLC families.) Enrollment Information & Forms coming soon! 4

A Children’s Home in the Treasure Valley In 2018, the Department of Health & Welfare estimates that there are about 1300 Idaho children in foster care, from very young children to teenagers. Some need temporary homes and are eventually able to return to their birth families. Some find a permanent home in foster care. These children are victims of various forms of abuse or neglect in Idaho. There is a desperate need for foster homes to care for these children. “The LORD Bless You!” Money raised from the 2018 Christmas Shoppe will be used to help build a new Children’s Home in the Treasure Valley. This future home for children here in the Valley will be a faithbased home “modeled” after the Shepherd’s Home in McCall, Idaho. Money raised through the Bill Basye Memorial Fund will also be used for this future children’s home. The Mission of the New Home is to: Nurture children in need who are victims of abuse, neglect or crisis by providing a safe, loving, caring family home where at-risk children of all ages are served and cared for as long as need. Bill Basye Memorial Fund A memorial fund has been established in honor of Bill Basye for a new Children’s Home in the Treasure Valley. The funds are intended to start a children’s home based on the model of the current Shepherd's Home mission at McCall into the Treasure Valley with guidance by Friendship Celebration. Make checks payable to FRIENDSHIP CELEBRATION and be sure to clearly mark any donations to this fund “Bill Basye-Children’s Home Fund.”

So….what is a Life Group? Love, Friendship and Fellowship are essential needs for a fulfilling and satisfied life. God made us to need the relationship of other people. Meeting in small groups where people are free to share life experiences is one way to effectively meet those needs. Life Groups are small groups of no more than 12 people that meet periodically, usually in a home. Each group will also have outings and service events. The purpose of a Life group is simple: to bring people together in a comfortable, informal, and safe environment where people can connect with others that have similar interests, who are hungry for more spiritual wisdom and revelation in their life, and who see each other as “family”. Through these Life Groups we can become better disciples of Jesus. In response, we will bring the saving Gospel and the love of Jesus to others in our community, just as Jesus intended for every believer to do. “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” (Matthew 28: 18 - 20)
