When we live out a spirituality of drawing nearer to others and seeking their welfare, our hearts are opened wide to the Lord’s greatest and most beautiful gifts. Whenever we encounter another person in love, we learn something new about God. Whenever our eyes are opened to acknowledge the other, we grow in the light of faith and knowledge of God…. We do not live better when we flee, hide, refuse to share, stop giving and lock ourselves up in our own comforts. Such a life is nothing less than slow suicide (Joy of the Gospel, 272).

Important Announcements Adoration is back in the Church until further notice. 5:30 pm Mass will continue to be in the Church.

Pastor’s Column Dear Parish Family: The message and person of Jesus must have been so compelling that the fishermen of Galilee could not resist his simple invitation: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Mark 1:17). This same Jesus is calling us today to “go beyond the mind you have.” This is the root meaning of the Greek word for repentance (metanoia). Dominico Ghirlandaio (1481) Conversion is an on-going Calling of the Apostles (detail) liturgy.slu.edu process of turning back to Jesus. Where do we find him? The answer is rather simple. A habit of daily prayer enables us to see Jesus in those who inconvenience me, those with whom I work or live, in the poor, and in those I find obnoxious. Much of our energy is expended in achieving and accumulating. The Christian “way-of-being” in the world is best characterized by a bumper sticker I saw years ago: “live simply, so others might simply live.” We teach this lesson best to our children by example. I have fond memories of accompanying my Dad to early morning Mass here at Blessed Sacrament during Lent. Not long after I was ordained a priest, my mother asked me for guidance in determining where to invest her charity. I suggested the following priorities: (1) her parish; (2) the Cardinal’s Appeal; and (3) one or two other charities dear to her heart. We are all besieged by worthy requests for financial help. This month I ask every household in this parish to re-evaluate its priorities. I hope that in addition to your support for this vibrant parish you will also make a pledge to the annual Cardinal’s Appeal. Keep in mind that to whom more has been given more is expected! Those who follow the gospel often do things that the world considers insane: “Then they left their nets and followed him” (Mark 1:18). Yours in Christ, Father Bill Foley

SINULOG FESTIVAL

COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP

The Filipino Catholic community at Blessed Sacrament invites you to the “Sinulog” Santo Niño (Baby Jesus) Festival on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. One of the biggest traditional celebrations in the Phillipines, this annual cultural and religious festival routinely attracts 1 to 2 million people from all over the world to Cebu City, Philippines. The festival will be held here at Blessed Sacrament on Sunday, January 28. Bring your Santo Niños for a blessing and a parade. A reception will follow. Questions? Contact Raymond Ong: [email protected].

The Gift of Listening In Joy of Love (73), Pope Francis tells us that “mutual self-giving in the sacrament of matrimony can be addressed in our conversation with one another. Often the other spouse does not need a solution to his or her problems, but simply to be heard, to feel that someone has acknowledged their pain, their disappointment, their hopes and their dreams.” The Communication Workshop for Couples Blessed Sacrament offers every Lent gives married and engaged couples an opportunity to learn to do just that. This year’s workshop will be held Feb 20, 27, Mar 6, 13. For more information check the parish website www.blessedsacramentdc. org/ministries/faithformation/communicationworkshop.

Blessed Sacrament Facilities Update

THAT MAN IS YOU: A NUDGE In his homilies this past weekend, Fr. Alec talked about “nudges.” He explained that God’s call to deepen our spiritual life is not usually like the lightning bolt that jolted St. Paul on the road to Damascus. It’s more like a series of nudges prompting us to make good decisions. That Man Is You (TMIY) offers the men of Blessed Sacrament such nudges at the end of the workweek. It’s a time out, a chance to step aside from the daily drill and engage your Catholic faith more seriously. We meet in the School Auditorium from 6:30-8:00 a.m. on 13 Saturday mornings. The winter/spring semester began January 13, but you didn’t miss much. Feel free to jump in.

Parish Projects: Church Roof – The slate is in the process of being removed from the roof and additional scaffolding is being installed. As additional scaffolding is added, again, please be attentive to the construction areas which are off limits to pedestrians for safety reasons. Sidewalk areas may be temporarily blocked periodically for safety reasons, but all church entrances should remain open. Also, for safety reasons, all work areas, especially inside the fencing, is off limits to everyone except contractors. GOAL:

Donations for the roof are continuing to come $350,000 in and we now have $128,225 towards our $350,000 goal for our roof project. Thank so much for your generosity! Church Chimes – Note that we will not CURRENT: be ringing the chimes until after the roof $128,225 project is complete.

TMIY builds authentic Catholic male leadership. Each session includes a substantial hot breakfast, a video presentation, and small-group discussion. TMIY is for all men, but especially helpful for those with children at home

School Projects: Outdoor Classroom – The major portion of the outdoor classroom is complete and should be substantially complete soon.

If you’d like to try TMIY but can’t commit yourself to make every session, that’s fine. Register so we know how many to expect, then come whenever you can. To register, go to the parish website, www.blessedsacramentdc.org, and click on the TMIY listing under “News and Announcements.” Or get there simply by clicking on www.blessedsacramentdc.org/article/callling-all-menregister-now-for-that-man-is-you-tmiy/.

If you have any additional questions about these projects, please contact [email protected]

Did You Know?? Did you know that taking certain supplements while pregnant may reduce the risk that a child will develop autism, a new study suggests. Researchers looked at more than 45,000 Israeli children born between 2003 and 2007, tracking their development until 2015. They found that kids born to mothers who took folic acid and multivitamins before and during pregnancy were less likely to be on the spectrum. For more information on how Blessed Sacrament is becoming inclusive, contact [email protected].

Attention CPAs and Tax Lawyers! This upcoming tax return season, Catholic Charities is managing an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law. CPAs and tax lawyers are needed to provide pro bono tax preparation for the working poor. If a return is filed, many of these workers will enjoy a sizeable IRS refund check due in large part to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC can help lift thousands of Washington area families out of poverty and keeps them out of poverty. Sadly, almost 20,000 low income residents of DC are not claiming the EITC, and thus are losing a potential financial resource for them. We will be providing training in January for all interested volunteers. Tax return preparation will take place on Saturdays from February 3 to April 14. To learn more about volunteering for Catholic Charities VITA Program, please contact Deacon Jim Shanahan by email: jim. [email protected] or phone: 202.772.4310.
