Athens First United Methodist Church January 21, 2018 8:30, 9:45, & 11:00 a.m.

Welcome

We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

Prelude Lyrics

He brought us out of the darkness and into the light. He has lifted our blindness and He gave us His sight. We are no longer slaves, we are daughters and sons. We have entered communion with the three in One. No love is greater. No love is stronger All eyes are on You, for You have redeemed our souls. You won’t let go.

Josh Miles The buzz of the world interrupts our lives and fills our ears. Call us into Your way of life, O God. The complaints of others settle in our mind and cloud our vision. PR AY ERS OF THE PEOPLE A ND THE LOR D’S PR AY ER

Susan Taylor Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Anthem Lyrics

Savior, may I learn to love thee, walk the path that thou hast shown, pause to help and lift another, finding strength beyond my own. Savior, may I learn to love thee—Lord, I would follow thee. Who am I to judge another when I walk imperfectly? In the quiet heart is hidden sorrow that the eye can’t see. Who am I to judge another? Lord, I would follow thee. I would be my brother’s keeper; I would learn the healer’s art. To the wounded and the weary, I would show a gentle heart. I would be my brother’s keeper—Lord, I would follow thee. Savior, may I love another as I know thou lovest me, find in thee my strength, my beacon, for thy servant I would be. Savior, may I love another—Lord, I would follow thee.

SACR A MENT OF HOLY COMMU NION

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. God, you are before all things. You are beyond all things. In the midst of all things and all peoples you have made yourself known through Jesus of Nazareth, who revealed your compassion for the outcast, forgiveness for the fallen, and hope for the poor and hungry.

8:30 a.m. service

On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Let us pray: Come to us, Spirit of love, and let the bread and drink before us bear your life to our life, nourish a vision of hope, and unite us in one body of peace. Amen. Receiving of the Elements

At Athens First United Methodist Church, all are invited to commune at Christ’s table. If you need to be served in your pew, please call this to the attention of an usher. Glutenfree elements are available at the center station in the front of the sanctuary.

Song Lyrics

Night comes like it always does, but the shadow is longer this time. And I know as I let it go, for a minute everything is all right. I'm just lying here tonight just trying to hold on. When the dark is blinding and I can't find my way to you, there's a still, small voice like a silver lining shining through. Lord, speak to me. Through this storm you took us in your arms and showed us just where to land. Sometimes there’s a hurricane, but you break down walls in the sand.

Music During Holy Communion “Speak to Me” | Tofer Brown, Lucy Schwartz, and Sarah Siskind Prayer After Receiving Holy, gracious God, here at this table your promise of life is made tangible. We have rested in the depth of your love. We have tasted your nourishing, nurturing presence. Together, at this table, you have offered us life. Together, by your grace, we accept the life you offer, and we give you thanks. Amen. *CLOSING H Y MN
