Dear Neighbour, Crossrail Programme – Platform Extension Work – Ilford Network Rail is undertaking essential improvement works in your area as part of the Crossrail Programme, linking Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, via new tunnels under central London. As part of the Crossrail project, some infrastructure and station upgrades are required between Stratford and Shenfield. At Ilford, we are discussing with the Council the redevelopment of the main entrance on Cranbrook Road into a new spacious, modern and accessible station building, and the train operator is also planning an upgrade to the York Mews entrance. In the meantime, we will start work at track level by replacing and repositioning the overhead line electrification and extending the platforms. This work is in preparation for the longer Crossrail trains which will operate on the line. The station will also benefit from new help points, customer information screens, public address systems and CCTV. The infrastructure upgrades will allow for more reliable and more frequent rail services. When Crossrail fully opens in 2019, passengers from Ilford will be able to travel through central London to destinations including Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street without having to change trains. All work will be managed in order to minimise disruption to our neighbours, residents and businesses. However, safety is our number one priority and unfortunately this means some of our works have to be carried out whilst trains are not running. Description of works Installation of temporary welfare facility behind the Atlas Cars building on Ilford Hill. There will be some noise as our site operatives use hand tools and cutting equipment to install concrete bases and arrange for service connections.

Installation of 2 steel piles on the railway lines at the west end of Ilford Station platforms. ‘Piling’ is the process used to install bases for overhead gantry structures or signal bases. These activities usually have to take place at weekends when trains are not running. Each pile takes approximately 35-45 minutes to install. There are two methods of driving the steel piles into the ground, vibration and hammer. Our default method is always to use the vibrating method as this is not as noisy. During the piling activities monitoring is undertaken to ensure that agreed noise levels are not exceeded. During this process our site teams also use an acoustic shroud which is attached to the piling machine to help lower the noise levels produced.

The current platforms will be extended at the western end to accommodate the new Crossrail trains. We will start by installing trackside fencing and platform hoardings, using hand held tools and a pneumatic breaker for post foundations. Mechanical excavators and rail mounted vehicles will be used to build the concrete foundations of the new platform extensions. The new structure will then be built up using blockwork and pre-cast concrete sections. Drainage and cable ducting will then be installed. Finally tarmac, tactile pavers and line painting will complete the new platform surface.
Saturday 08:00 -13:00hrs Installation of new lighting columns, communications equipment, CCTV and passenger information points will then take place. Sunday 13 December 2015 00:05 to 05:00hrs

Description of works Starting at Christmas we will begin removal of 300 metres of overhead line cables and installation of a new overhead line gantry. Residents living close to the station may notice an increase in noise levels during this time, our site team will use road rail vehicles and power tools to complete the work.
January to July 2016
We will then install 120 meters of new track, and a new overhead line cables.

This work will involve the use of road rail vehicles, engineering trains, hand and power tools and other specialist railway vehicles such as ‘tampers’ which vibrate and consolidate new track to make it safe for the passage of trains. Residents living close to the railway will notice an increase in noise levels during these works.
We apologise for any inconvenience these essential works may cause. Whilst we do anticipate some of these works to be quite noisy at times, Best Practicable Means are adopted in order to keep noise levels to a minimum. Our site operatives will be briefed on not generating unnecessary noise when on site. Machines and vehicles in intermittent us e will be shut down whenever practical during periods between works. Other measures such as erecting acoustic barriers around noisy works will be used whenever practical. The local authority has been, and will continue to be, consulted through the Control of Pollution Act 1974 (Section 61) process regarding the implementation of the works.
