nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43)
This time of year fruit can be hard to come by; at least inexpensive home-grown freshly picked fruit. Trucks ship apples and oranges, picked at various times, from all over the United States, to our grocery stores so that we might have some fruity options. Fruits are shipped from Mexico and even farther away, so that the “frozen tundra” can be well stocked with something healthy. Nevertheless, good melons, fresh strawberries, and the like are hard to come by and often harder to pay for. What is it about good fruit that keeps many away from the canned stuff? Of course there are all those important health factors and don’t forget good taste! Yet there is something obvious about seeking good fruit over (Continued on page 2)

bad. Except in the case of bananas, people just don’t search for rotten fruit. Nor do farmers pick from (or even keep) trees known to produce tainted, tiny, or “tinged” fruit. Jesus says that good trees produce good fruit, and bad ones’ bad. And He would know. He saw and tasted firsthand the fruit of this world – hatred, bitterness, anger, rejection, even death. Jesus knows all about trees and their fruit. He hung on a tree. Acts 5:30 tells us He was killed “by hanging Him on a tree.” He was cursed (Deuteronomy 21:23) and ”bore our sins in His body” (1 Peter 2:24) on that tree. Now trees bear fruit…at least good ones. That’s what Jesus reminded his followers of in the sermon on the plain in Luke chapter 6. And people recognize trees by the fruit they bear. So, what kind of fruit did the cross of Christ bear? That is a question for the ages. For time and again “without fail” (Jeremiah 17:8) Christ’s death on a tree has produced fruit for the ages. It is a special fruit, an imported fruit, a very nutritious fruit, a “good” fruit produced on a “Good” day. Jesus Himself became the first fruit “of those who belong to Him” (I Corinthians 15:23). The fruit of His tree is the fruit of faith. The cross we have standing before us this Lent is a colorful reminder of His tree which bore fruit – us! And that fruit is enabled to bear more fruit – good fruit, colorful, healthy, good-for-you fruit! Jesus said, “People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers” (Luke 6:44). So too, people do not expect to find jealousy, gossip, bitterness or other sour grapes from us, but rather the fruit of faith; a fruit to be shared with them. Let us together this Lenten season witness the rich and colorful fruit of Calvary and bear it to our neighbor. In Christ, Rev. David Hinz

News from Prince of Peace March 2018 SAVE THE DATE! “Shine Like Stars!” is the theme for the Prince of Peace Lutheran School Annual Legacy Dinner and Auction which will be held Sunday, April 22nd at the school. Mark your calendar now and save the date to come out and provide support for our school. Tickets will again be $14 to cover the cost of the catered noon meal – look for them to be available by March 1st. You will have the chance to bid on a variety of items during the Silent Auction and some special items during our Live Auction (rumor has it that a couple of retired pastors will be offering a Boundary Waters canoe trip). And…you will have the opportunity to enjoy the fellowship of Christians coming together to make Prince of Peace Lutheran School an even better place for Christian education! If you would like to donate an item or basket for the Auction please have it to the school by April 1st, or contact Bobbi Trisko 320-267-0504 with questions . Our chapel offerings here at POP for the month of March will go to support Lutheran Island Camp and all the wonderful programs they offer to children and their families. Dine to Donate is a fun way to get out and donate to your favorite little Lutheran School, Prince of Peace! On the fourth Monday of each month a restaurant is chosen and on that given date you can enjoy dinner out for the night and a % of your bill (depending on the restaurant anywhere from 1050%) will come right back to Prince of Peace. Just let the restaurant know you are here for the Dine to Donate for Prince of Peace Lutheran School that evening. For the month of March, we will be dining at Panera on March 26th anytime from 4pm to 8 pm. Bring in flyer and they will donate 20% of you bill to Prince of Peace! P.O.P. SCRIP NEWS! Here’s how they work. Think about an unmet need in our community and how you could help. Apply to lead your volunteer team, leader must be a Thrivent Member, in a one-time fundraiser, service activity or educational event that can be completed within 90 days. For example: Provide a meal for the community, host a spaghetti supper to raise funds for your favorite organization, create care packages for our troops, host an educational event (cooking, parenting, budgeting, etc.) or organize a 5K run to support a non-profit organization. Please see me to submit your idea to make a positive change in our community. Music and Worship Notes On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross; the emblem of suffering and shame. And I love that old cross where the dearest and best, for a world of lost sinners was slain. So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it someday for a crown. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, has a wondrous attraction for me. For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above, to bear it to dark Calvary. (Chorus) In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, a wondrous beauty I see. For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died to pardon and sanctify me. (Chorus) To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, it's shame and reproach gladly bear. Then He'll call me some day to my home far away, where His glory forever I'll share. (Chorus) This beloved old hymn was written by George Bennard in 1912. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio shortly after the end of the Civil War. His father, a coal miner, moved the family to Iowa and there George came to Christ through the ministry of the Salvation Army. He felt led to train for the ministry, but his plans were disrupted when his father's death left him responsible for his mother and sisters. George was only sixteen years old. Instead of theological school, he worked by day and devoted his spare time to books. Eventually his obligations lessened and George was able to move to Chicago, marry, and begin ministry with the Salvation Army. Later he was ordained by the Methodist Episcopal church and became a traveling evangelist. After a difficult season of ministry, George realized he needed to better understand the power of the Cross of Christ. He said, "I was praying for a fuller understanding of the Cross. As I read and studied and prayed, the Christ of the Cross became more than a symbol. It was like seeing John 3:16 leave the printed page, take form, and act out the meaning of redemption. While watching this scene with my mind's eye, the theme of the song came to me." It took several months for the words to formulate in his mind. As he preached through the Midwest, George would carry the words with him, working on them, polishing them, and sometimes singing them in meetings. It always struck a chord with his audiences. At last his hymn was finished and George went to the home of some friends and sang it for them. After the last note, he asked them what they thought. The friends were so moved that they helped pay the fees to have it printed and it soon began appearing in hymnbooks across America. (Taken from "Then Sings My Soul" by Robert J. TRANSFER THE BLESSINGS Trinity’s Endowment Fund This is the first year that applications are being accepted for a distribution from the Transfer the Blessings account. The amount available for projects this year is $4,136. The monies from this fund are designated for new internal and external projects or activities that are beyond the day to day function of the church -- not included in our church budget. Any member of the church or committee can fill out an application found in the church office or on the church website. The deadline for 2018 applications is March 15th. The Transfer the Blessings Committee will make recommendations to the Voter’s assembly and a final decision will be made by May 1, 2018. If you have any questions, please contact one of the TTB committee members.

Campus News May this Lenten season be a time of repentance and faithfulness to the Word, our source of strength and power over the devil…. We have been enjoying the surveys on campus. Do you know why we baptize babies? One young lady from a non-Lutheran church said they do not baptize babies rather older people so they can make the right decision. So I asked her what happens when a “non-dedicated” baby dies…and she said that the Bible says God will take care of them. YOU tell me where in the Bible it says that. By the way she is still looking for that verse… Thank you for your prayers and your willingness to help at the LSF ministry. May God bless and keep each of you in His faithful, loving Hands. The Independence Center, Inc. (ICI) needs volunteers to complete activities with consumers who have special needs. These volunteers must enjoy having fun and completing leisure activities on a one on one basis or with a small group. Activities consumers enjoy completing are: reading stories, baking activities, arts and crafts, painting nails, playing cards, accompanying our staff on community outings, and much more!

FESTIVAL OF THE NATIVITIES

A small planning committee has been formed to explore the possibility of hosting a “Festival of the Nativities” at Trinity this December. The first step is to see if we could acquire enough nativity scenes to display. Our goal would be 100. Do you have a nativity set that you would donate to be shared at the festival?

The festival would be open to the public and we would also invite families from neighborhoods around the church. Initial thoughts are the nativity display, a children’s area where they could “touch” a nativity and make a simple art project relating to the birth of Christ, music and possibly refreshments.
