From The President Last June Denver Seminary formed a Race Relations Working Group to examine the history and current state of the Seminary’s relationship with the African-American church community in Denver. I’ve had the privilege of serving as a member of this group, and throughout the process, I have spent several hours in prayer, conversation, research, and reflection on the ongoing problem of racism. In addition several authors, friends, and colleagues have challenged and enriched my thinking. Ultimately, all of this led to the creation of a document entitled “Racism: A Reflection and a Prayer.” This personal reflection and prayer has created opportunities for many deep, honest, and earnest conversations. I offer it to you with the prayer that it might do the same for you and your communities of faith.

Denver Seminary Offers new Master of Theology (ThM) Program We are pleased to announce that, starting Fall 2016, Denver Seminary will offer a 30-credit Master of Theology with concentrations in Old Testament, New Testament, and Theology. This program is the most advanced master’s level degree available and offers the chance to develop high level academic skills and to go deeper in specific subject areas. More information on the ThM Program can be found on our website. 14th Annual Golf Tournament We are honored and excited to invite you to our 14th Annual Denver Seminary Golf Tournament at Red Rocks Country Club in Morrison, Colorado on Monday, August 8. All proceeds will be given toward the General Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid for students.

Faculty/Staff Updates: Richard S. Hess, PhD Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages, Editor of the Denver Journal Dr. Hess shares the following updates: Publications “Joshua and Egypt,” pp. 144-50 in C. Cohen, C. Gottlieb, and M. Gruber eds., Visions of Life in Biblical Times: Essays in Honor of Meir Lubetski (Hebrew Bible Monographs, 76; Sheffield: Sheffield Phoenix, 2015). Grandchildren Our seventh grandchild, a boy, Kelton Lachlan Glas, was born to our daughter Fiona (MA YFM from Denver Seminary) and her husband David Glas on April 7, weighing 7 lbs and 1 ounce and 19.75 inches in length. Mother and son are beautiful and well. Church Rev. Drs. Jean and Rick Hess will celebrate the constituting of 316, a Celtic Christian Church, as part of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church denomination, on May 21 at 5:00 pm at 1601 S. Clarkson St., Denver.
Craig Blomberg, PhD, Distinguished Professor of New Testament Dr. Blomberg shares the following prayer and praise requests: Praise that thus far Beth’s pregnancy has gone well. She is due the end of August with our first grandchild. Praise that Rachel made her first successful academic presentation as a doctoral student in molecular biology at a science conference in Breckenridge this spring. Pray for three weeks of teaching in Singapore in August. Fran and I will go together. First time for both of us in this country. Pray for Scum of the Earth Church as it moves from two half-filled services to one hopefully full 5 PM
Sunday afternoon service beginning in June to gain some new momentum.
Howard Baker, ThM, Assistant Professor of Christian Formation A new involvement for me is serving as an editor for Conversations Journal: A Forum for Authentic Transformation. The current issue topic is “Race and Formation” which is in line with the Vernon Grounds Institute theme for the year of Race Relations. I encourage you to preview this issue online for some great articles on this crucial concern, including those by Prof. Felix Gilbert and trustee Patricia Raybon.
Marshall Shelley, Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program; Associate Professor of Pastoral Leadership and Ministry Denver Seminary is pleased to announce the hiring of Marshall Shelley to serve as the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program. Marshall was editor of Leadership Journal for 34 years, and served as a vice president at Christianity Today, oversaw Christian History, Marriage Partnership, Church Law & Tax Report, and Men of Integrity magazines and PreachingToday.com. Marshall earned a BA in journalism from Bethel University and an MDiv from Denver Seminary. He also took coursework at Wheaton College Graduate School, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and Stanford University, and received a DD from Denver Seminary. He has authored several books, including Well Intentioned Dragons and Leadership Secrets of Billy Graham, and he was general editor of The Quest Study Bible. He has served on the boards of the Evangelical Press Association, Marble Retreat, Denver Seminary, and as board chair of the American Tract Society. In addition, he worked as a copy editor for The Denver Post and served on the pastoral staff of two churches. Knut Heim, PhD, Professor of Old Testament Denver Seminary is pleased to announce the hiring of Rev. Dr. Knut Heim, Professor of Old Testament. Dr. Heim is a Presbyter (an ordained minister) in the Methodist Church of the United Kingdom. He is a member of The Society of Biblical Literature, The Institute of Biblical Research, The Society for the Study of the Old Testament (UK), and The Tyndale Fellowship (UK). His vision is to help students discover the Old Testament as a resource for ministry and an inspiration for life. Prior to his arrival at Denver Seminary, Dr. Heim has worked as a missionary (with Operation Mobilization), as an ordained minister in the Methodist Church (UK), as a Tutor in Old Testament at The Queen's Foundation/University of Birmingham (UK) and as a Tutor in Old Testament at Trinity College/University of Bristol (UK). His PhD, completed at the University of Liverpool, is on editorial clusters in the book of Proverbs. His
most recent book, also on Proverbs, examines the phenomenon of variant repetitions. He has published numerous articles and essays on all of the poetic books of the Hebrew Bible, as well as the book of Isaiah. His new monograph on metaphors in biblical poetry, which includes a reception history of personified wisdom, is due to appear in print. He currently works on a new monograph on parallelism in the Psalms, as well as commentaries on the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.
